Wait for the pics to load.
saw these on Reddit. Thinking of doing something similar but not sure if I’ll look mad!

That I was about 30 years older than them, and "interior mature"🤣

Gahdammit · 08/05/2025 21:34

Just not practical. Have you had a lava lamp?

  • they are heavy
  • the base is separate to the jar which is separate to the top so they would be very unstable like that.
  • they take hours to properly get going.
  • the emit practically no useful light.
  • they can be a bit smelly.
  • they get HOT! Like proper burn hot.

You could probably find wall lamps that look like it.

Looal · 08/05/2025 21:37

Do it! I have a bunch of stuff and decorations in my house that mumsnet and people would probably find tacky af, but it’s my house and all the geeky stuff makes it feel properly like my home, if you want to sell in the future just switch the lights back, won’t be a big issue.

Theunamedcat · 08/05/2025 21:37

I like the vibe but it's impractical

PansyPottering · 08/05/2025 21:42

I’d want to find out where they were getting their bulbs because last time I had to replace the bulb in my lava lamp it was so difficult to get a new one I nearly threw the lamp away.

BreezyAquaCrow · 08/05/2025 22:03

Brothel or lap dancing club.

FamingolosForDays · 08/05/2025 22:07

I would love it but would set off migraines for me so wouldn't cope. Would feel quite space shippy 😆 (but the madam June comment really made me laugh too!)

TheLaughOfRustyLee · 08/05/2025 22:09

I'd think its cool idea for about 30 seconds. Then I'd think, actually it's quite shit.

Like I did just now when I saw the pictures.

pleasedimfree · 08/05/2025 22:12

I love it so my style.
My home looks like a hippies dream i love colors i like funky i love different.

Octopusespunchforfun · 08/05/2025 22:16

They look like original Mathmos lamps to me. Love them 😍

AliBaliBee1234 · 08/05/2025 22:16

I'd think, wow this person is fun :)

LibertyLily · 08/05/2025 22:19

Definitely giving brothel/student house vibes.

I'm not a fan of fluorescent colours in the home or lava lamps (also reminds me of a family member who must have got theirs when they were popular first time round...1970s?)

Also, I imagine they would be ridiculously heavy on the wall - not to mention hot - but if you like the look, go for it @juicylipbalm

We can't all like the same things - I have quite eclectic interior tastes so you'd probably hate my home!

Sofasloth · 08/05/2025 20:21

Have you owned a lava lamp? They get VERY hot. You'd end up burning your face on one, reeling from that into the next one, burning your face on that one and so on down then corridor.

Only if you were completely off your face drunk😂

BethDuttonYeHaw · 08/05/2025 22:25

I think it was awesome if I was a student.

Loki64 · 08/05/2025 22:42

Im sorry but I think they look like giant butt plugs stuck to the wall

CoastalCalm · 08/05/2025 22:51

It looks like the hallway in a stripclub where you’d take punters for extras - awful and seedy

Whitecleanoverneat · 08/05/2025 23:01

I like it! I wouldn't do it myself but as a trip down memory lane (or lava lamp hall) I'd enjoy it. It's got quite a chilled out vibe - backroom of a 90s club.

avignon1234 · 08/05/2025 23:03

It's great. That's it really, decorate your house how you like. If I was a visitor I would like it just as much as a tasteful Farrow and Ball heritage paint with muted downlighting and important black and white prints of notable things. Express yourself. If you like it, then that is what matters, won't take much to change it if you change your mind. x

orangedream · 08/05/2025 23:08

Jennifershuffles · 08/05/2025 20:43

I'd think it was an unusually clean student house from the 90s

This.

saltandvinegarchipsticks · 08/05/2025 23:10

I’ve been obsessed with lava lamps since I saw one in H Samuel when I was about 5 in 1981, so I’m not the one to ask

Jamfirstest · 08/05/2025 23:10

I love them but also hate them it's hard to explain. I'd think the owner of the house was interesting and I'd be dying to see the whole house

BlondiePortz · 08/05/2025 23:10

zenai · 08/05/2025 20:42

TBH it's giving me brothel vibes.

Yes! I like it in one way but I am also imanging ping pong 'gymnatics'

but I hate darkness like that

IsThatYouPam · 08/05/2025 23:11

Absolutely love it. Giving me ideas... thanks!

Agapornis · 08/05/2025 23:15

Those are Mathmos Neo lamps, they don't get as hot (safe for children). I wouldn't have the blue liquid & blue lava colour, but it would look amazing in violet & orange, or the classic violet & red.

Bit pricey though, £120 RRP (£80ish on eBay if you're lucky), though extra bottles in different colours are only £30ish.

Caveat, I do have a couple of lava lamps including a Mathmos Astro (the original, which gets to about 50°C).

KnickerlessParsons · 08/05/2025 23:15

Wheech · 08/05/2025 20:23

I love lava lamps but don't they cost a lot to run?

I don’t think so. It’s only a v low wattage bulb.
