I'm not a fan of vertical blinds at all . If you can't afford Roman type which is fair enough. I'd rather have a cheap roller blind in a lovely colour on each window that you can leave pulled down by a couple of inches . Would be more flexible too

NotbloodyGivingupYet · 12/02/2024 10:09

I agree, you'll regret vertical blinds. Roller blinds if you can't afford Roman.
We can't advise which colour, you have to get that colour physically in the room to see how the light in there affects it.
Look at how people are disagreeing about teal. People get ideas in their heads about what a colour is, then they look different on phone and computer screens. Then there is what YOU prefer, not us lot.
I painted my kitchen plain white when I first moved in. It was a north facing room, and it actually looked blue on the wall. I thought I'd picked up the wrong tin, but it was just the north light. So some rooms will take teal (and there are many shades of teal), others won't. You don't know until you get a sample in the room, and see it with the rest of your furnishings.

Send this to the active group about everything that's hideous (in their eyes) in decor ... they'll have a field day with this room.

That’s a helpful reminder to the op showing no matter what people will hate something

Who cares really though we each live in our own spaces

I mean don’t go on there just take heart people are very critical online about decor

custard3point14 · 12/02/2024 10:12

@fuckssaaaaake so very kind. Were you never taught if you can't say anything nice don't say anything at all Wink

I'm amazed that some people have suggested getting rid of your lovely new carpet! We eat in our conservatory every night during the summer months and if it wasn't the only access to the garden, we would have had carpet without hesitation. I really do think the only changes I would make would be to get the table legs painted Matt black (you could also do that yourself) and then maybe have a bolder colour like teal on the walls. You've got so much light coming into the room that you could have something really dark like anthracite or even black. And then add black place mats.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 12/02/2024 10:28

custard3point14 · 12/02/2024 09:51

It's all we can afford I think. We can't afford to do each window individually

What about white voiles until you're in a better place financially/can see how other changes improve it? You just need them covered, not all light excluded, really. If you're near an IKEA, they do long voiles cheaply, or Amazon, as there are companies that will do plain ones in any length you want with tiny weights on the end to make sure they hang well.

This is a good idea. Would be cheaper to replace the carpet than the table and that would totally transform the room.

I'm still reading the entire thread OP but if money allows, replace the carpet and do the large statement plants and you'll be good to go.

OhBeAFineGuyKissMe · 12/02/2024 10:43

The problem with vertical blinds is they are more towards conservatory vibe when the rest of the room is dining room.

I would go with roller rather than vertical and then something drapy for the door.

Pipsquiggle · 12/02/2024 10:44

@custard3point14 I take back my previous comment.

I think you should own your taste and just style it out more.

Go on Pinterest and just start looking at 'marble tables with grey chairs' and see how they accessorize them. You'll start noticing whether you like flowers or candelabra or table runners or bowls of fruit................................

I wouldn't go with any blinds unless you have to have them to use the room when you want - it will depend on if the sun makes the room unusable at certain times of day.

Own your taste, it really doesn't matter what we think.

That’s good, maybe the carpet is ok

The op likes it which counts

On another point I just looked at the design hates thread, so much is disliked honestly you may as well just go with what we each like and not throw stuff out easily

New2024 · 12/02/2024 10:51

I’d change the chairs and carpet but I don’t like grey or grey with marble effect

diddl · 12/02/2024 10:52

I'd look for voiles to make it more room & less conservatory.

MuffinCoffee · 12/02/2024 10:53

Maybe I am the only one but I actually like it. Especially the day time picture.

TheRealKatnissEverdeen · 12/02/2024 10:56

Just read your updates so ignore my comments re changing the carpets.
Just add some greenery and window treatments.
And enjoy it.
My pad isn't a MN gem (open plan, I have grey and cream in my bedroom, I don't have a separate guest ensuite, my youngest has a box room and not a large double....I could go on) and I sleep perfectly fine at night.

I hope this doesn't sound condescending but congrats on home ownership and providing a warm home for the kids 😀

Getthethrowonthesofa · 12/02/2024 10:56

to be honest, I’d not do vertical either, bu I guess they are better than bare windows,

I get the cost issue . Maybe floor length voiles is the answer?

Differentstarts · 12/02/2024 12:20

I can't believe people are suggesting roller blinds over vertical blinds. Iv just spent so much money changing roller blinds to vertical blinds

Because vertical blinds shouldn’t even be legal outside offices-hideous things …however if there to your taste that’s fine, you probably wouldn’t like my Venetian blinds!

Mirabai · 12/02/2024 13:27

I’d go voile too.

Venetian blinds are better then roller blinds but still not a fan. The reason I got rid of my roller blinds is they are not fit for purpose. I use my blinds so that I'm not blinded by the sun and can actually see the telly

Mirabai · 12/02/2024 14:03

In fact, I don’t think I’d bother, unless it’s south facing and gets very hot/glare those kind of orangery windows don’t need curtains.

itsjustturbulance · 12/02/2024 14:05

It's dull. Everything is grey with a random bit of pink on the walls.

Very 2016.

Not to my taste, and a bit blingy for me!

Did you get made to order conservatory blinds? Those are the best really, but pricey due to the amount of glass.

Spud90 · 12/02/2024 15:22

Your decor is supposed to make you happy and feel good. Just because someone else doesn't like it doesn't mean you should change it. If it doesn't make you feel good but you're unsure what to change then look at some home magazines in the shops and see if anything catches your eye. Tiktok can be good for interior design inspo too. It can take a while to find your style and you might change things a few times before you are finally happy! Next time try making mood boards so you can see what furniture will look like together with carpets and wall colours before you buy.

GotMooMilk · 12/02/2024 16:05

Agree don’t get vertical blinds they’re bloody awful! Roller or Venetian all the way

TidalShore · 12/02/2024 18:51

I was going to suggest violes too. You can get them pretty cheaply and will soften the room a bit. I think the problem with vertical blinds is they are very structured so I'd worry they'd sort of clash with the more curved features of the furniture.

Also I wonder if you could get chair covers? Something to pick out the creamy table top to make them tie in more with the table than blending with the carpet maybe? Or coloured if you wanted to add more colour to the room. Either way they would be practical for washing and keeping the actual chairs nice 🙂

But I don't think it looks bad at all. Just a little unfinished. Once you've got your bits and bobs in it will just settle into the room.
