The table I could probably tolerate but the grey chairs....no. can you return it'?

Unless you found it in a skip but it wouldn't look out of place in the dining room of Sandringham and your carpet floor removed to discover original parquet mumsnet where never going to like it.

Please, for my anxious wee brain, never eat anything with turmeric near it uncovered, it'll stain it.
My SiL has beautiful worktops of a similar effect and they plated up a curry and they stained, nothing has removed the yellowish tinge and even though my SiL is a tit of epic proportions, it does make me sad for her, they're lovely worktops.

Good advice

op keep the table and google the worse things for staining so you know

Food and carpet make me nervous but then I have had the impact of young dc and their messiness

Other than that is you like it all then great, enjoy it

Don’t go down waste path because few would get wow that’s so nice threads in here if they posted pics, taste is individual anyway

You have a clean, organised new room that suits your needs. It contains elements and colours that you and your DH love. OK, you don't like / regret choosing the table legs so that's a compromise you've made with DH. That's marriage!

You've clearly said that you don't want to use tablecloths but you seem to like runners, candles and other accessories. You didn't ask for advice on colour but you've appreciated ideas and seem inspired to try different colours for window treatments and accessories.

It's your room, so now's the time to enjoy choosing those colours and accessories - have fun! Use the room for working, playing and eating and you'll soon forget about those table legs.

Whether we would choose grey for our home or carpet for our conservatories aren't the questions you've asked!

Enjoy your room that you've worked hard for!

Pipsquiggle · 12/02/2024 07:28

Hey OP

You've had a hard time on here. Your design choices aren't my style but equally I wouldn't baulk at any of it, if I had a cup of tea with you in that room.
Individually, I think they all elements (carpet, table, chairs) look ok but somehow jar when put together.

First of all I would get looking at Pinterest and see how others style marble tables. I would also see which tables work well on grey carpeted surfaces.

Personally I think losing the carpet might be the easiest / cheapest option and from a practical perspective would be better for a dining room.

Porageeater · 12/02/2024 07:31

Just sit with it for a bit and then have fun choosing accessories, plants etc which will pull it together. It’ll be fine OP.

RancidRuby · 12/02/2024 07:45

OP - what you've chosen for this room is not my taste but if you like it then that's all that matters. I think it would be completely wasteful to get rid of a brand new carpet or buy a new table/chairs when they are new and in perfectly good condition so my advice is that you need to somehow bring together all the individual parts to make it more cohesive. The room looks quite cold and sterile so I think you need some colour - I'd steer away from pinks and teals as has been suggested as they are cold colours, my thoughts are that it needs warming up, so if you like pale pink go for a pink that has more peachy undertones, if you like teal then try a similar colour that has more yellow or red undertones as they will make the space feel warm and cosier. Google the colour wheel and play with colour combinations using that, bringing in at least 2 complementary accent colours which have warm tones, I think some plants would really help soften and warm it too. Good luck.

RancidRuby · 12/02/2024 07:46

To add - I think you need some blinds too to soften the windows.

OhBeAFineGuyKissMe · 12/02/2024 07:51

Teal walls sounds good.

Then some Roman blinds on the wall windows (softer than roller blinds but fit better than curtains in wall to wall places). Then curtains for the main French doors.

Lamps both in the windowsill and some upstanding ones.

And some plants.

Then the most important thing is to enjoy it. Christen it once finished with a dinner party, even if it is just you, DH and son dressing up fancy,

NotbloodyGivingupYet · 12/02/2024 08:27

custard3point14 · 12/02/2024 00:30

@NotbloodyGivingupYet teal walls? 🤔

That's the kind of thing! Try it with other colours. Try it with colours you don't think you like, you might be surprised. Then with the same colour at the windows and on the table (table runner or place mats or fruit bowl etc), you will be able to live with the table and chairs.
I think that blinds at the windows will make it feel more of a room, which is what you are after, and less like a conservatory with a table in it.

Mirabai · 12/02/2024 08:36

Teal walls is a mistake, it’s a cold colour and too strong for the strong grey carpet. The pink warms it up ate least.

Diplidocus4 · 12/02/2024 08:38

Carpet in a conservatory ?
Sorry no, all to grey for me.
But just my opinion.

LookItsMeAgain · 12/02/2024 08:39

Chewbecca · 11/02/2024 22:01

I don't agree lino is nicer than carpet anywhere! Carpet is so much nicer under your feet when eating and absorbs the noise.
We eat nicely and rarely drop food on the floor and it vacuums up just fine when we do.
Lino is cold, hard and noisy IMO.

My suggestion about the lino was that you can get some that resembles laminate or wood floors and it may have been cheaper than the £600 that this person paid for the carpet.

@custard3point14 - you wrote "I was asking for opinions on the table only, as that's something I'm not sure about." Unfortunately though it's not just the table that we're seeing. There is the carpet and the chairs too.

If I was going for a marble topped dining table I would have gone for one with a thinner marbling pattern. The one you have is very bold.

Looking at your 'before' photo, I would have left the tiles and got a large rug for going under the table leaving about a foot (or so) of tile visible around the edge of the room. You would still have the comfort of the carpet feeling under foot but it wouldn't be so overwhelming in the room. You have the carpet now and I think the table and the carpet and the very comfortable looking chairs (that is what I would keep) are together over powering.

It's my personal opinion here. Feel free to ignore it.

I agree.

I love the pink walls.

Yes, I think it needs a warmer colour than teal. Maybe a darker pink, but not a lot darker.

Or do the teal, but add warmer tones as well for contrast. Blush pink, teal and grey look nice together, or a russety colour instead of the pink.

fuckssaaaaake · 12/02/2024 09:24

Send this to the active group about everything that's hideous (in their eyes) in decor ... they'll have a field day with this room.

Guavafish1 · 12/02/2024 09:26

looks comfortable

Getthethrowonthesofa · 12/02/2024 09:33

The pink the op used is blue toned, which adds to the coldness, a yellow toned one would be warmer. Thr bare windows make it look colder. Undressed windows always do.

the issue is carpeting it makes it look like a room, the bare windows make it look like the conservatory it is. It’s a room of two half’s.

the op simply needs to finish it.

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 12/02/2024 09:42

I think what can make it better is if you have no more white, no more grey, and no more shiny/glittery/metal/mirror.

There's a lot of white - windows, ceiling, woodwork, table top.

Everything else is grey and shiny. The carpet has glitter, the mirror legs, the velvet on the chairs.

You need to have contrast now, not blend it all into one white grey mass, which I think is what's causing you to not like the overall look atm.

Hopefully the mirrored legs will pick up a bit of colour and not be so homogenous with the carpet if you deepen up the colour on the walls, add nice window blinds/curtains, and yes, add plants - lots of plants! - and natural materials.

custard3point14 · 12/02/2024 09:50

This is the blind company we're going to use and the style. Which colour do you all recommend? Loads to choose from

NeverDropYourMooncup · 12/02/2024 09:51

I wouldn't pick vertical blinds at all.

custard3point14 · 12/02/2024 09:51

It's all we can afford I think. We can't afford to do each window individually

MrsSkylerWhite · 12/02/2024 09:53

Maybe embrace that it’s a conservatory?
Can you find someone who can replace the legs with wrought iron, victorian/edwardian type black legs (lots on FB or eBay very cheaply). Also, Victorian/Edwardian style wrought iron garden chairs. Take the carpet up. What colour are the tiles? Then lots of large, tropical house plants

Quitelikeacatslife · 12/02/2024 09:53

Any warm colour on the walls will really help. And that's a cheap way of giving it a go . But the teal on the mock up is cold in tone . There are lovely teals with warm tones or I love an ocre with grey

moggerhanger · 12/02/2024 09:53

I'm with the poster who suggested adding jewel colours like emerald and teal. Pink with grey just reminds me of 1980s offices! I would be tempted to paint the walls cream, have some real plants in deep green or royal blue ceramic pots, maybe a wooden bowl on a teal runner for the table. I'd avoid anything obviously plastic. I think it would look pretty nice.

Growlybear83 · 12/02/2024 09:53

I think I would choose anthracite. But if you are going to have teal walls then monsoon might look nice if the wall colour was the same but slightly lighter?
