Just got a new table for our newly renovated conservatory. DH loves it.. but it's hideous isn't it?

I don't agree lino is nicer than carpet anywhere! Carpet is so much nicer under your feet when eating and absorbs the noise.
We eat nicely and rarely drop food on the floor and it vacuums up just fine when we do.
Lino is cold, hard and noisy IMO.

I’m sorry that you’ve spent £600 on the carpet instead of getting some laminate or lino that looks like wood flooring as you’re using it as a dining room. Food getting dropped on that carpet will be a divil to clean up (imo).

I love the chairs but they don’t really go with the table (again this is my personal opinion).

I do think you should approach the company that sold it to you and see if you can get different legs attached to it and also to make sure that the marble is sealed properly so it’s less likely to stain or a carpenter to get different legs/base for the table

Edited

You don’t need to be sorry, it is her home, her choice.

Momtotwokids · 11/02/2024 22:06

I would just have the chairs reupholstered. A cream color would look nice.

She has kids though, so cream would be a bold choice...

Mirabai · 11/02/2024 22:12

Reupholstering costs the same as chairs. You could have slip covers made, but what’s the point, they’re new chairs.

Mirabai · 11/02/2024 22:15

If she were going to change anything I would change the carpet to a non-grey neutral. Natural or light oak laminate type thing. That would make the whole thing lighter and less overwhelmingly grey.

AllTheMiniEggs · 11/02/2024 22:19

I think the carpet is the biggest issue. It's far too dark which makes the room cold. And the contrast between it and the furniture is too much.

A wooden floor would help a lot I think.

Kendodd · 11/02/2024 22:19

Did you say that's AFTER the renovation?

Mrsgreen100 · 11/02/2024 22:26

Dump the rug and add another colour anything but more grey tbh

NoOrdinaryMorning · 11/02/2024 22:26

Chavvy as f

Buglife22 · 11/02/2024 22:27

I love it.

custard3point14 · 11/02/2024 22:29

@Kendodd yes it's AFTER this was BEFORE

@NoOrdinaryMorning I do originate from a council estate as does DH so you can take the girl out of the council estate but not the council estate out of the girl maybe!

The table isn't really to my taste but I certainly wouldn't call it hideous. I think the room is very well co-ordinated

custard3point14 · 11/02/2024 22:33

Carpet is non negotiable really, I really like it in person it's the only new carpet we've ever had, other than when dc were born in their nurseries. As a rule we eat in the living room (as we are lazy chavs) and that carpet is light grey and the stains we have had on it from dc are awful which is why I wanted darker. It was carpet or a huge rug but we decided carpet would make the room warmer and it does immensely, much less echoey and feels more like a room than a converted conservatory.

I was asking for opinions on the table only, as that's something I'm not sure about.

Beenalongwinter · 11/02/2024 22:36

Not to my taste but the chairs look very comfortable and the table is a good size . The carpet will be cosy.
Your windows and doors are lovely just be very careful choosing your window dressings.
Simple blinds would probably be best in a neutral colour, not grey.
Although the chairs are comfortable they take up a fair amount of space and may be difficult to keep clean. Might you consider selling them on and buying chairs that tuck under the table, avoid grey if possible.
I agree with adding plants and otherwise keeping the space uncluttered.

custard3point14 · 11/02/2024 22:37

@Beenalongwinter thank you. I really liked the teal coloured chairs and earlier poster sent a link too, so maybe in a year or so when DH isn't quite so upset about wasting money I might try to sell them and buy some that colour with the money

Mirabai · 11/02/2024 22:38

Well I wouldn’t worry about the table, it’s not as bad as posters are making out. At least its a light colour.

Mirabai · 11/02/2024 22:39

And btw all this “chavvy” stuff is really fucking nasty and unnecessary.

custard3point14 · 11/02/2024 18:22

Does anyone know how likely marble stains/wears?

We've had two small marble topped tables in our conservatory for about 25 years and there's no sign of wear on them at all. We've always been reasonably careful with them but not obsessively so. They are both a mottled grey/green so marks would probably not notice as much as on your paler table, but I'm sure you will find it quite hard wearing. I think some of the comments on this thread are very uncalled for. I think your conservatory looks lovely - the only reason I said that the table wasn't to my taste is because of the legs.

FranklySonImTheGaffer · 11/02/2024 22:41

My god some posters are bloody awful on here.

First of all, I like the room. Am jealous of your conservatory roof conversion!

Second, there's nothing wrong with the table if it's to your liking.

Personally, I would be looking to add some nice green houseplants in coloured pots (maybe coordinate pots and table runner) because plants just take the edge off a room if it's primarily one colour. Plus, an additional colour always helps with grey (I'd go for navy or yellow but that's my personal taste).

Also, you said this is new, and sometimes changes just feel and look wrong because you're not used to it yet. Give it time.

ThirtyThrillionThreeTrees · 11/02/2024 22:45

Do you have teenagers or know anyone handy with photoshop?

Ask them to play around with chairs with a high back in dusky pink, dark green, teal or even black.

custard3point14 · 11/02/2024 22:45

@Growlybear83 thank you! I don't really want to cover it over with a table cloth as our old table was scratched when we bought it so I've never had a table that I've not had to cover over with cloths, that I would have to change every few months due to getting stained/scratched by the cat 🤦🏼‍♀️
My best friend said the same thing about the legs and I must agree I'm not keen on them either but looking online a lot of that style table has those kind of legs for some reason.

@FranklySonImTheGaffer this is the kind of comment I was hoping for, kind but constructive with some advice. Thank you!

@Thehamsterthatcametotea that's a good idea! I do really like the teal colour at the moment. The dark greenish blue that's quite popular in homes.
