What's people's thoughts on this - is it scare mongering?
My main holiday isn't for another wee while but are we going to see disruptions/cancellations to rival COVID times?

I live very rurally and so my job and nearest shop etc are all quite far away.

I think it’s scaremongering but I do wish the government would allow people to wfh if they want to.

I can’t and wouldn’t want to wfh but I know many who can/would like to wfh and so it just makes sense.

Hopefully you don’t live so rurally that you need to fly to your job and the shops 😁

All these people just bothered about their summer holiday when people are being killed in a illegal war by two mad men

MariaMagdalenaa · 16/04/2026 22:22

I just think fuck Trump.

Thus it ever was. 🤷‍♀️ This is the Holidays forum TBF.

DH and I are going to Scarbados so unless the pumps run out of petrol we should be okay. 🤞

ChocolateBasket · 16/04/2026 22:24

I can believe it. I'm a pilot and Jet fuel is in short supply, as is Avgas for general aviation. The prices are completely through the roof.

LifeOfAShowgirl13 · 16/04/2026 22:24

Imagine how minor a cancelled holiday would feel if we lived in one of the countries being attacked and were spending each day worrying thay our children might be killed.

Well, some people have shelled out £000s with no ability to reclaim it, at the same time that food, utilities rocketing in response to the same war. Because of several madmen. Just because the bombs are not landing in the uk (yet) doesn’t mean that the financial implications of loss of the holiday are not significant to many people.

... not as simple as ... and not at the price of a simple seat reservation either. You pay/ upgrade for the privilege of using the Eurostar.

www.seat61.com/interrail-and-eurail-passes-on-eurostar.htm

Yes....you have to pay for a seat reservation on high speed trains in some countries, and for Eurostar. We know this. Prices vary a lot- Eurostar is £30. Frecciarosse in Italy are about a tenner I think. Which isn't great, but it usually works much out cheaper than buying single tickets in high season.

In, for example, UK,Germany, Netherlands and Switzerland there are no further Interrail reservation fees no matter how fast the train.

UnctuousUnicorns · 16/04/2026 22:29

Well, an accident in Feb '25 has left me in a wheelchair and with £15000+ (nearly all our savings) spent on wheelchairs and home adaptations like stair lifts, ramps, walk in bath etc. It's been a pretty shit 14 months, so yeah, I'd quite like a cheapy holiday in Scarbs. So sue me. We've fuck all left anyway. 🤷‍♀️

I’m currently researching how to get to Sweden for the birth of my grandchild, if I can’t fly there.

Bubblebathbefore8 · 16/04/2026 22:34

It’s scaremongering

AllJoyAndNoFun · 16/04/2026 21:17

I will drive to Italy if I have to.

If there's no fuel? How? 😂

socks1107 · 16/04/2026 22:35

I was really looking forward to our booked holidays this year. I guess it’s a watch a wait situation.
worst case it’s cancelled but I’m not in a country that’s being bombed so I’m still grateful

CautiousLurker2 · 16/04/2026 22:36

Any suggestions on UK to Palermo? Am thinking trains and ferries should only take about 36-48 hours…

We go on one holiday a year. You can bet I'm bothered if I can go or not!

I’m going to Palermo too, with Ryanair. Thinking of cancelling as don’t want to get stuck there

She said drive, not fly. There is an issue with supply of aviation fuel. Not petrol. Some people really just don’t watch the news.

Twoshoesnewshoes · 16/04/2026 22:45

We were planning Crete in September.
its a long way off so plenty of time to assess, but I’m looking at Jura now - we can drive and get the Chunnel

We think flight fees would be refunded (booked BA), but we booked with Club med. Fancy holiday for DS’s 18th and to celebrate end of A Levels. We shelled out £8k… even though we have individual insurance, this would likely come under war related exclusion clause. We’ll lose the lot.

Fucking hate Trump and Iran.

Echobelly · 16/04/2026 22:46

I am thinking through what we'll do if we can't fly this summer - have one weekend end of June and a week in a half in August planned. Even if things sort out neither is to a big tourist destination so if there's any kind of rationing I'd kind of assume they'd prioritise flights to places lots of people are going which stand to lose more from loss of tourism (although TBH, no idea how it would work).

No flights would suck, but it's not a 'holiday of a lifetime' situation, nor were the flights expensive. I book everything on credit card and they might pay out where insurance wouldn't (used that once when an airline I booked with went bust)

I've done loads of these kind of trips, including getting to Sweden a few times. It's more expensive but I love it. The Man in Seat 61 is a god.

You can be worried by more than one thing at once.

Theres always a war/ conflict somewhere in the world at any one time. How concerned about Sudanese or DRC were you last year?

It’s not the price - it’s an actual production shortage that’s an issue.

RonaldMcDonaldTrump · 16/04/2026 22:55

I'm supposed to be booking a holiday for may half term . Its a ATOL protected package holiday and I would get travel insurance. Would I be stupid to proceed or would you wait?

MojoMoon · 16/04/2026 22:55

The quote was regarding JET FUEL stocks.

Crude oil is refined into many different oil products, that are not interchangeable. Jet fuel, kerosene, gasoline, diesel, marine bunker fuel, asphalt etc.

There are many different grades of crude oil. An oil refinery is set up to take a specific grade of crude and to refine it into specific products.

They are not very flexible - they can't just switch to other crude grades or to focus on a specific refined product.

You can't put diesel in a gasoline car and likewise you can't run a plane on marine bunker fuel. The products are not interchangeable when consumed.

Ruwais refinery in the UAE is a large producer of jet fuel but cannot currently export due to the war.

However there are other jet fuel refineries - not least in the US.

Jet fuel exists, it is just more expensive. Demand for it will respond to the high prices - some flights will get cancelled because they'd rather not fly than pay the price.

You do not need to panic fill your petrol car etc.
