What's people's thoughts on this - is it scare mongering?
My main holiday isn't for another wee while but are we going to see disruptions/cancellations to rival COVID times?

We have a package holiday via TUI so fingers crossed they will do us right. Pre covid we missed a flight as it was moved earlier and we wasn't informed ( stupidly neither did we check the day before). TUI drove us 150 miles away to get the next free flight together. They gave us a full refund during covid. So I hope they will do the same if they can't source fuel.

Such a worry. We don't go away abroad very often either. It's a real treat when we do and very expensive. Minorca so no chance of driving there

Not if you get an Interrail pass!

You can upgrade to high speed trains!

Do we know if ferries, etc will be affected by fuel shortages too?

Edited to add: Also how much of our fresh food is flown in? Or is most of it by sea?

Edited

Ferries don't run on aviation fuel so probably not.

Most of the fresh food from Europe comes by ferry crossing so fingers crossed. Not so sure about mange tout from Guatemala though.

Same. What a complete and utter penis. Now starting on the pope of all people. How on earth this orange gimp is in charge of the world right now amazes me. Literally amazes me. I feel like we’re in an episode of the Simpsons.

...although we can cancel up to 48 hours before so will have to keep an eye on the situation

I am concerned, I don’t know what will happen.

I would in theory drive to Corfu (holiday booked for July) but would I be able to do it? I don’t know. I’ve never driven on the other side of the road!

According to the Interrail journey planner, you can get from London to Bari/ Brindisi in about 24 hours by train, and from there get the ferry to Corfu. In bocca al lupo!

Itsahardknocklifeforus · 16/04/2026 21:57

I just had a look at flights to our holiday destination. Ryanair flights are a tad cheaper now than when I booked them. If there were real concerns, Michael O'Leary, would have doubled the fares by now!

KidsAndDogsGalore · 16/04/2026 21:51

You can upgrade to high speed trains!

What do you mean "upgrade"?
You can get high speed trains with a standard Interrail pass, but in some countries you have to pay extra for a mandatory reservation (boring 🙄) These countries include France and Italy, and also Eurostar.

MabelsBeats · 16/04/2026 22:00

Now this I hadn’t thought of, thank you @crackofdoom

ChaliceinWonderland · 16/04/2026 22:02

We are driving to Italy. So, hope it will be OK! My pilot friend Says its all true..

Totalinsanity · 16/04/2026 22:09

I’m a bit more worried about food security than people’s holidays to be fair!! Maybe if the shortages become a reality the govt’s priorities and attitudes towards farmers might change?! I reckon Trump will cave before it gets to that point though so no panic stations required yet!!

... not as simple as ... and not at the price of a simple seat reservation either. You pay/ upgrade for the privilege of using the Eurostar.

We’re going abroad this year and ever since the war started I’ve been getting feelings similar to early 2020- when I suspected our summer
holiday wouldn’t happen and everyone else kept telling me of course it will 😬

Yes, feels like 2020 all over again.

DH and I currently checking whether the perks with our bank account (travel insurance etc) means we have protection as we used his card to pay for our holiday accommodation in June. Same for flights, though we think we’d get that money back if they have to cancel. Thinking it may be too late to take out travel insurance, though we both have it on our bank accounts. The booking includes our 18yr old son so no idea whether his room would be covered as we paid (he was 17 at the time of the booking).

peppercornrent · 16/04/2026 22:11

JET FUEL - can you edit your title to stop people panicking at the pumps?

It's a good job that we all support our local farmers and insist on buying British - I'd hate to think what would happen if we as a country became too reliant on cheap imported food........🤔

I just had a look at flights to our holiday destination. Ryanair flights are a tad cheaper now than when I booked them. If there were real concerns, Michael O'Leary, would have doubled the fares by now!

"Ryanair said it had hedged 80% of its fuel costs until next March at $67 a barrel. However, O’Leary said the bigger problem for the airline would not be price, but supply disruption if the war continued.“Nobody is willing to give us any assurances into June or July,” he said. “But if there’s a risk to 10% or 20% of the fuel supply in June, July or August, then we and all other airlines would have to start looking at cancelling some flights or taking some capacity out.”He declined to rule out higher fares, saying that while there were no plans to put up prices, the company was “never in control of pricing”. He cited higher competition for short-haul journeys in Europe, especially over the Easter holidays and amid a switch in demand away from the Gulf and towards the continent."

So 5 trains & a ferry... I assume 3 are high-speed lines. All in all not bad!
I come from a European city, it would be 4 trains for me to get home, with 2 being high speed... would take around 15 hours, at £300.- one way. 😬
Just think about it: The journey is the destination!

Just 2.5 days each way compared to 6 hours door to door

Thank you. I’m not hot on fuel types (but I imagine a jet fuelled ferry would not be great for seasickness).

Squareblack · 16/04/2026 22:18

I also read holiday bookings are significantly down as a result of the possibility of issues.
I haven't booked anywhere and am happy to give going away a miss.
My children all have holidays booked and will be pissed off for sure.
