What's people's thoughts on this - is it scare mongering?
My main holiday isn't for another wee while but are we going to see disruptions/cancellations to rival COVID times?

Нет!

We drive to Italy for our annual summer holiday in any case, but tomorrow we will be picking up our new electric car so hopefully we will still be able to go even if the fuel crisis continues.

Fingers crossed anyway.

I fly weekly for work, but am prepared to look for the silver lining if I have a valid excuse for working from home more for a while.

... there is always the train. Eurostar to Paris from there the rest of Europe is at your fingertips! but sadly it comes at a much higher cost

That’s handy if you live in Glasgow like me!

Thecows · 17/04/2026 00:50

researchers3 · 16/04/2026 23:48

Well yes, quite, but more so for the hundreds of thousands of lives wiped out since he's been president.

Obviously, which is why I said for all of this

So Trump and Iran are bad but Netanyahu gets a free pass? Okay then.

Oh fck off. It’s a holiday thread.

Was wondering about that too as we have an electric car and could do eurostar to Paris. Wondering whether the cost of charging might go up exponentially if all the other fuels go up, though?

I will drive to Italy if I have to.

With what fuel (or electricity…?)

Plump82 · 17/04/2026 03:40

IAmBeaIDrinkTea · 16/04/2026 23:58

Yes, this.
Makes panic thread on public forum with absolutely nothing to back it up and then does a runner. 🙄
Then sits back as the comments be like

If this is aimed at me then I apologise for going to bed too early that I couldn't respond. But my source was the multiple new articles that are out at the moment. I wouldn't really call it a panic thread.

I will try and get my title amended to include the word aviation.

@GlomOfNit I'm very sorry to hear about your situation but as you've pointed out, this is the holiday forum which is why I posted here as it effects people going on holiday.

We are going to Finland in June for a family event (family live there). It's not one of those places that "at your fingertips" from Paris and would need 3 trains and a ferry after you get to Paris and it would be 2 trains to get to Paris. By car it would be 35 hours of driving/ferry with no stops.

Coincidentally I'm going from Finland to the UK in June. Hope we both manage our trips! I'm starting to really stress about it as it's the last summer my parents can manage a proper holiday with us, travelling around the UK so if it doesn't happen this year it'll never happen 😔

It’s all over the news.

BBC?
Typical catastrophising and scaremongering.

countrygirl99 · 17/04/2026 04:21

@Natsku fingers crossed.

That's good. Carbon Footprint and all that.

Are you taking the piss?

The carbon footprint of this war is massive. A total waste of prescious resources with no benefit.Hmm

Hehe - that's what I thought too. Every cloud...

dandiestbohemian · 17/04/2026 04:40

@MelanzaneParmigiana umm no - it has been on all news channels, as it is news.

EnglishBreakfastTea1 · 17/04/2026 05:01

I'm not going on my big holiday to Crete until late September. But I was considering going to Vienna in June. If the worst happens I'll get the train there, or I might take a British holiday instead. It's not a huge issue for me (yet).

wishingonastar101 · 17/04/2026 06:10

what really pisses me off is this is ALL about money... someone is getting very rich while people die and lives up upturned.

SixSevenShutUp · 17/04/2026 06:20

whiteroseredrose · 16/04/2026 21:42

Maybe.

I tried to call our insurance (supposedly good and Which? recommend) and couldn’t get through. There was a long message saying to try your travel provider first, then your credit card - travel insurance should be the last resort for otherwise unrecoverable costs. It doesn’t sound too hopeful.

OMG, what if you are in an accident abroad and need urgent medical care/repatriation and you can't get through to them? That message would have me cancelling the policy and finding a new one before flying.

I will drive to Italy if I have to.

Not if they say essential travel
only, for essential workers.

We have a package holiday via TUI so fingers crossed they will do us right. Pre covid we missed a flight as it was moved earlier and we wasn't informed ( stupidly neither did we check the day before). TUI drove us 150 miles away to get the next free flight together. They gave us a full refund during covid. So I hope they will do the same if they can't source fuel.

Such a worry. We don't go away abroad very often either. It's a real treat when we do and very expensive. Minorca so no chance of driving there

TUI just cancelled our friends holiday to Sorrento. They were going in May. No reason was given.

AllJoyAndNoFun · 17/04/2026 06:27

whyyyyyisitmonddayy · 17/04/2026 01:57

I was being a bit tongue in cheek and obviously if fuel was rationed I wouldn't be going, but it's jet fuel (kerosene) which they only have 6 weeks of, not petrol/ diesel.

Shallotsaresmallonions · 17/04/2026 06:32

I hope this is resolved by June. Our only childcare option is flying over from the UK to stay with us. Otherwise, I will be giving birth alone.

notimagain · 17/04/2026 07:02

Several mentions of silver linings upthread but I don't think many of those who make a living out of aviation are seeing them.

There's already a rumour of one of the small ACMI (roughly speaking short notice/short term charter) operators laying off staff.

Legssses · 17/04/2026 07:55

I really don't think this is a panic thread.

It is discussing a warning issued by the head of the International Energy Agency, not "my mate Bob, down the pub says...."

Lots of us will have money and plans tied up in air travel, and will rightly want to be aware of what is going on, and that's before we consider air freight.

Plus, this is a holiday thread.
