What's people's thoughts on this - is it scare mongering?
My main holiday isn't for another wee while but are we going to see disruptions/cancellations to rival COVID times?

We’re going abroad this year and ever since the war started I’ve been getting feelings similar to early 2020- when I suspected our summer
holiday wouldn’t happen and everyone else kept telling me of course it will 😬

Mouthfulofquiz · 16/04/2026 21:17

What is your source for this info?

AllJoyAndNoFun · 16/04/2026 21:17

I will drive to Italy if I have to.

It’s all over the news.

StrictlyCoffee · 16/04/2026 21:18

How much do they normally have at one time?

CrossedOrCross · 16/04/2026 21:19

That's good. Carbon Footprint and all that.

shellyleppard · 16/04/2026 21:21

My son's college were meant to be going to Thailand. That's now changed to Morocco. But I expect it will be cancelled sigh

MabelsBeats · 16/04/2026 21:21

I am concerned, I don’t know what will happen.

I would in theory drive to Corfu (holiday booked for July) but would I be able to do it? I don’t know. I’ve never driven on the other side of the road!

porridgewithsalt · 16/04/2026 21:26

Do those planning on driving in the event of a fuel outage have cars that run on air?

Edited to add realisation from news article just posted: specifically jet fuel. Ok!

MabelsBeats · 16/04/2026 21:27

No. Mine runs on electricity.

BastardtheCat · 16/04/2026 21:28

Are insurance companies able to compensate a cancelled package holiday as a result of this?

porridgewithsalt · 16/04/2026 21:29

MabelsBeats · 16/04/2026 21:27

No. Mine runs on electricity.

Just seen that the shortage is specific to aviation fuel.

How long is your holiday? It's a long way to Corfu! And allowing/sourcing EV chargers too (I have an EV)...

I appreciate your comment may have been tongue in cheek.

Mouthfulofquiz · 16/04/2026 21:29

I had seen the news about jet fuel specifically but not ‘fuel’ in general. That has different implications altogether.

MabelsBeats · 16/04/2026 21:32

It’s two weeks. It’s a big treat for my DD post-GCSEs, we’ve rented a villa. I think I may be clutching at straws due to the fact that it would be such a mission and we’d have to have reliable chargers all along the route. We had to cancel a holiday in April 2020 for obvious reasons and it would be a shame if it happened again.

KidsAndDogsGalore · 16/04/2026 21:32

... there is always the train. Eurostar to Paris from there the rest of Europe is at your fingertips! but sadly it comes at a much higher cost

Plump82 · 16/04/2026 21:34

We don't drive but tbh wouldn't consider it even if we could. Thankfully our accommodation is free cancellation up to about 20 days before arrival so id like to think we'll know the situation before then.

whiteroseredrose · 16/04/2026 21:37

We were just talking about that. We should have been in Jordan right now but have had to cancel. We were looking at going somewhere else in May, but now there might not be any fuel.

Definitely need to book cancellable accommodation.

countrygirl99 · 16/04/2026 21:38

We are going to Finland in June for a family event (family live there). It's not one of those places that "at your fingertips" from Paris and would need 3 trains and a ferry after you get to Paris and it would be 2 trains to get to Paris. By car it would be 35 hours of driving/ferry with no stops.

Thecows · 16/04/2026 21:41

God I loathe Trump for all this

whiteroseredrose · 16/04/2026 21:42

BastardtheCat · 16/04/2026 21:28

Are insurance companies able to compensate a cancelled package holiday as a result of this?

Maybe.

I tried to call our insurance (supposedly good and Which? recommend) and couldn’t get through. There was a long message saying to try your travel provider first, then your credit card - travel insurance should be the last resort for otherwise unrecoverable costs. It doesn’t sound too hopeful.

HidethebiscuitsitsNellie · 16/04/2026 21:46

Do we know if ferries, etc will be affected by fuel shortages too?

Edited to add: Also how much of our fresh food is flown in? Or is most of it by sea?

So 5 trains & a ferry... I assume 3 are high-speed lines. All in all not bad!
I come from a European city, it would be 4 trains for me to get home, with 2 being high speed... would take around 15 hours, at £300.- one way. 😬
Just think about it: The journey is the destination!

Not if you get an Interrail pass!

Butterme · 16/04/2026 21:49

I live very rurally and so my job and nearest shop etc are all quite far away.

I think it’s scaremongering but I do wish the government would allow people to wfh if they want to.

I can’t and wouldn’t want to wfh but I know many who can/would like to wfh and so it just makes sense.
