A few of us have just discovered we all did philosophy - a connection we didn't realise we had.

Any more?

Hi Skyler ...
My housemates were all 'main campus' people ... so I divided my time between the Lukey Bop (Friday nights) and the Lemmie (Saturday nights) ... then there was Thursday night at Warehouse and Boxes .... Wednesday night at the Blackhorse .... Sunday lunchtimes at the Double Locks ....
I also worked at the Blackhorse and at Warehouse and Boxes ... So really, my whole time was spent in an alcoholic establishment
I was there what seemed like 100 years ago ... '89 - '93 .... Best 4 years of my life ... didn't have any money, but I was happy ...

at you being chucked out of the Lukey Bop ... you must have been REALLY bad ... even I didn't get kicked out of there

marthamoo · 21/11/2006 23:03

laundrylover · 21/11/2006 23:08

Wilbur I was at Uni of Ulster.

CaptainDippy · 22/11/2006 00:23

Those were the days ....

Fattymumma · 22/11/2006 00:33

Social work here too.

Aderyn · 22/11/2006 08:56

Did anyone study their Philosophy at a university in East Anglia beginning with E?

fennel · 22/11/2006 09:16

hi Skyler and Ghosty, I work at Ex uni now. But am sufficiently out of student life to have never heard of the Lukey bop

ghosty · 22/11/2006 09:28

Never heard of the Lukie Bop?

I think you should go down to St Lukes on a Friday night to check it out Fennel ....

Unless, of course it is no longer going on, which would be a damn shame ....

fennel · 22/11/2006 09:32

hmm, my uni social life seems to consist of events such as "Professor Boring and Wife invite fennel and partner to an 'at home' RSVP". not Lukey bops. Could I be mixing with the wrong crowd?

ghosty · 22/11/2006 09:35

Take them down to the Lukie Bop ... might wake 'em up a bit

What do you do there Fennel? I believe it has changed a lot since I was there ... I get the Alumni magazine and it seems unrecognisable ... St Luke's don't even offer PE as a degree now - something swanky called a Sports Science degree followed by a PGCE I heard if they want to teach ...

Loved it there, loved the main campus too ... spent many a pleasant afternoon 'working' in the library ...

fennel · 22/11/2006 09:37

I do research in psychology but mostly based in the law school. which is very stuffy and not me at all. am loving the campus though, especially the outdoor pool right near my building, and the botanical gardens and all the outdoor cafes we're still using in November

ghosty · 22/11/2006 09:45

Outdoor pool?

It sounds very sophisticated now ... 'outdoor cafes' ... the cafe in the main building near the library (was it Cornwall House or Devonshire House??) had an outside bit ... but only the green welly lot went out there ... we stayed in the pub ...

God, I was a horrible student ...

The Law building was lovely IIRC ... one of my housemates did Law ... the Moot Room was brilliant ... I think I heckled at a Debating Society meeting and was asked not to return

fennel · 22/11/2006 09:48

maybe Law has moved then, I don't think you could call our 60's monstrosity "beautiful".

ghosty · 22/11/2006 09:51

Wasn't the Moot Room round???? I always liked it ... not the Law building I suppose (can't really remember that bit ... )

fennel · 22/11/2006 09:56

oh there is maybe a Moot room on the steps on the way in. haven't been in it. must have a look.

ghosty · 22/11/2006 10:08

Please bear in mind that I saw it all through beer stained goggles it probably was/is hideous .... but anywhere was nicer than halls and my awful flea pit of a student house ...

fennel · 22/11/2006 10:10

Exeter and Devon though are totally lovely. am in honeymoon phase of living here

Skyler · 22/11/2006 11:58

I loved my time at Exeter although the sloaney types were always a bit annoying to have around. My experience seems very similar to yours Ghosty, Lemmy or sometimes bop Fri and Sat, Volts on a Tues, Timepiece on a Wed (my fave), Warehouse on a Thurs, Lunch at the Bowling Green on Sunday and the Blackie on a Monday. Whistful sigh. Sadly I didn't make the most of being in beautiful Exeter and Devon though we did make it to Topsham to do the Topsham ten, Exmouth to go to the beach (lots) and some place St something where they run with lit barrels at Bonfire night. It is a happy drunken phase of my life. I was disgracefully behaved and ready to grow up when I left and happy not to see half the people again apart from my housemate lol as there are too many embarrassing stories. I graduated 97. Nearly ten years ago wow. I am quite jealous of you Fennel being there and being able to appreciate it better than I did. I do remember the Cathedral being wonderful and the quiet in the close there compared to the buzz of the High Street was so peaceful and fab shops and cafes in Gandy Street. Happy Days. Devonshire House had the cafe bit and more importantly The Ram, scene of many a session .

fennel · 22/11/2006 12:01

I don't think any of those pubs you both mention have a playground or soft play attached, do they? Except Double Locks. we like Turf locks too with a whole pirate ship to play on.

Ottery St Mary for the burning barrels.

Skyler · 22/11/2006 12:06

Thank you! Ottery St Mary! That was annoying me. Was truly unbelievable!

throckenholt · 22/11/2006 12:23

BSc in Environmental Science (had to do philosophy in the first year and I hated it ).

MSc in something or other

PhD in oceanography and meteorology. Actually I just spent the morning throwing out all the papers etc from my PhD - I had forgotten how much work I actually did for it .

Bozza · 22/11/2006 12:41
