could be coelic or liver problems I think but don't know much about it - I think it sounds like you have a problem digesting fat which is something to do with liver/bile/gall bladder maybe? Hope you get it sorted v. soon - is it an endoscopy you're having? That's v. good for detecting digestive problems. Good sign that you haven't got any blood in your BMs

Iworryalot · 03/05/2008 11:25

Thanks thirty , if an endoscopy in down throat then im not having that one , its the one the other way up he said this will go a third of the way up ,as i do bleed a little when straining he wantd to see if i have a tear or piles i think so much to hake in when your so scared and nervous .... he did mention the other one but said to do this first and then if i wanted to have it done i could ,and wants me to see a dietition to ......
My problems all started when i got vey bad tummy bug from DS over a year ago diohrea/sickness wiped through the whole family ,my BM never been the same since ..
the only good thing if i can think of is that within that year is hasnt got any worse , hope thats a good thing

Please do not google - it will always tell you the worse case scenarios, which of course it may not be. Put it to the back of your mind, enjoy your weekend with your family and wait to speak to your doctor/specialist next week.

Elibean · 03/05/2008 21:58

((worry)) I know how easy it is to get super anxious about health problems - just remember the odds are hugely in your favour that whatever is wrong is something simple and treatable. FWIW, I've had bouts of bowel problems over the years - on and off - and have had a sigmoidoscopy. IBS for me too - its so SO common, especially in women.

As for oiliness in the water of the toilet bowl, I've seen it often - doesn't mean much, just means you've eaten some fats/oily food. And even if you weren't digesting fats properly, the most common reason would be a tummy bug or a food intolerance. The consultant will be doing the tests for peace of mind, which I really hope you get soon....xxx

Iworryalot · 03/05/2008 23:02

Thankyou so much both of you has helped a great deal ,i am so worried and it really helps to talk about it , i will phone my gatro man on tuesday to ley him know my feelings , google has scared the liiving daylights out of me, and thinking all sorts , tell me Elibean if you can did you have similar thing s to me .... loose stools ish

HonoriaGlossop · 03/05/2008 23:04

agree with Elibean, my brother had giardia which is a bad tummy bug and he has never been able to digest fat properly since; there are lots of people who have this sort of problem.

i think from what you describe it sounds totally logical that this tummy bug you had has left you with some problems digesting fat; and IBS sounds a possibility too.

I really wouldn't worry; don't bother googling, don't allow yourself to do it, just take a huge deep breath and remember the odds are this is nothing to worry about and don't let it ruin your weekend!

Iworryalot · 03/05/2008 23:06

Also what was the sigmoidoscopy like ? if you dont mind asking ....
many thanks

OP posts:
Iworryalot · 03/05/2008 23:14

Thanks Honoria , helps a lot , just seems a coinsedence that all was fine till this bad bug then all BM go strange . gastro Doc did say that the bowel is a very sensative and nurogical thing that is very sensative to all things ie bugs and is the first thing that allows the outside world into our bodies IE food bacteria etc and our bodies have to cope with .. if that makes sense ? did when he told me anyway , thanks again how is your brother now ?
I do think i having trouble absorbing fat as makes sense loose BM oily water just how do you treat it and is it dangerous ?

MaureenMLove · 03/05/2008 23:19

My DH had a colonoscopy, which is pretty much the same as a sigmoidoscopy. (Sigmoid, is the 's'shape part of your colon)

He had a strong laxative for the day before the procedure and on the day was given a sedative, which knocked him out totally. He remembers being wheeled in and then nothing until waking up in recovery. All I remember is his need to eat everything in sight on the way home, the same day!

Iworryalot · 03/05/2008 23:22

thanks , how is he now ?

OP posts:
MaureenMLove · 03/05/2008 23:26

He was diagonised with diverticular disease, which is very uncommon in people under 60. Its little pockets that form in the colon and food gets stuck in them and turn bad, causing stomach pains, bloating etc. He had to have about 10cms of his colon removed in the end. However, he is completely 100% cured now and not a senakot has passed his lips for over 3 years now!

It is highly unlikely that you have this, as I say it is very rare in young people, so please don't Google it!

Iworryalot · 03/05/2008 23:38

thanks MaureenMlove i Wont google it.... my mum has also had this to and has had an operation and is fine now.
I will now go searching for answers anymore , especially on the internet ..... its so nice to hear from others who have smiilar problems, its the not knowing that is the worst i think . just want to get looked at whatever has to be done and get some answers ..... im only 35 and thinking so negatively .and feeling so depressed .its really effecting my life ...

OP posts:
Iworryalot · 03/05/2008 23:40

i meant NOT go searching for answers on the internet ..sorry bad speller ...

OP posts:
MaureenMLove · 03/05/2008 23:57

Totally understandable. Fear of the unknown. Bloody internet has made us all fear for our lives at one time or another, I'm sure!

Hope it goes OK. Be warned, the laxative is very strong and will complete exhaust you. If I remember, it was 3 doses and only clear liquids all day. Once it kicked in, DH was well and truely housebound. Good luck.

Iworryalot · 04/05/2008 00:00

Thanks M , not looking forward , but am in a way ! going to bed now so will say good night and many thanks for all advice given will tune in tomorrow .

Goodnight. I'll not be on until next Sunday night. I was the lucky winner of the MN Zante holiday, and I'm off in about an hour! If you update on this thread though, I'll find you easy enough! I'd like to know how you get on.

cositjustisok · 04/05/2008 06:56

Hi Iworryalot, first of all {{{hugs}}} to you. I know how worrying something like this can be.....why???? because I could have written your post myself a few years ago I had exactly the same symptoms as you describe with a few more too..I was producing a lot of mucous in the BM too, sorry if TMI and sometimes a little bit of blood too, i was very worried and my BM became my obsession I was freaked out everytime I went to the toilet and was a walking wreck..I kid you not.

First of all I have coeliac disease and have done all my life so when I went to the docs about my BM changes they instantly thought I was not sticking to my diet, but as I was, they had to look at other things that could be causing my symptoms. Oils can be seen after a BM when food is not being digested properly, or as I was told to cut out oily foods and see what the BM was like. I had a colonoscopy think this just goes in further than the sigmiodoscopy. In fact I have had 3 over the years. To cut a very long story short...All was clear, the only thing they found was piles and all my biopsies where clear too. My symptoms improved because I think I was so stressed by my BM that food was passing through my system too quick. This did take time to clear up and did not happen overnight. My consultant advised me to try a new diet higher in fibre to help the bowelalong and heal it. I found this very difficult as my diet is so restricted by coeliac disease. However I did change my diet and started to eat very very healthy...more fibre ...fruit and veg etc and natural yoghurt to help the bowel repair itself. This together with Trying not to worry about my BM...helped me.

I am not sure if I had a bug that started my probs or what..but I do know I suffered for a few years and even now if I get some mucous etc I take it as a sign my bowel is struggling and needs some diet changes. Hope this does not sound like I think your diet is the cause but it was for me so thought this info would help you. As my mum always says..The bowel is the lord and master ...if he is unhappy so are you so look after it well..by that I took as look after what you put in to your body and the bowel will look after how it comes out {smile}.
Sorry I have waffled on enough but hope this has helped .....if only a little. Hope you get some answers soon. Take care

Iworryalot · 04/05/2008 08:50

Thankyou cositjustisok, for advice it really helps to hear other peoples views and advice
were your symptoms like mine , see first thread ?
I am a real worryier hence my UN ,and i am totally obsessed with it now ,searching and searching for answers ,by internet [shock ] or by constantly pestering my Doctor ......
Now i am finally seeing a Gastro Doc i hope things will get sorted quicker , It all seems to me relevant to this Bug i got over a year go , i have also considered possible coeliac D or chrones ,but think i would feel sick and losing weight if this was happening .
I will chase up Tuesday my appt ,and hope to get appt done soon ,
i am also due to see diet ition , to help sort out diet and eliminate certain foods to see if that helps , i do eat well now but yes im sure there is room for improvement ,iv slowed down on fruite as this seems to make it worse , although i dont know classic case of cant see the woods for the trees (if that makes sense ) or is it the other way round ?
I hope you are ok now ?

OP posts:
cositjustisok · 04/05/2008 09:17

Yes my symptoms where very much like yours and I too am a born worrier so understand how you feel re pestering docs and googling symptoms...If I was in that situation again I do know what I would do (because it works).....because I think my mind was so focused on my BM I was "making" myself ill...so to speak with pain (IBS) and mushy BM.

No more googling..pointless as just makes you worry more giving diagnosis that are nowhere near the truth. This worry causes your bowel to spasm and make the whole process difficult to treat
Drink plenty of water to flush out the bowel of as many toxins as poss.
Start a healthy eating plan...3 regular meals with plenty of fruit and veg to help cleanse and keep bowel nice and healthy.
Yoghurt to get some nice flora going on in the bowel.
Exercise regularly to keep constipation at bay and get you in the "healthy zone",

This sounds awful I know but so is your life now living with this worry and constant nagging doubts of what is wrong. SO this will do no harm whilst you wait on a confirmed diagnosis. You will more than likely find (Like I did)..that absolutely nothing is wrong and your bowel needs a little bit of love and attention after the horrendous bug....Look after the master and he will look after you
Sorry if this sounds like I am nagging...cos I am.....but I really wish someone had taken the time to help me or guide me because like you I could not see the wood for the trees and needed help.
I am not medically trained in any way but what I have suggested is not going to harm you at all and tehn let the docs do their bit....but I kinda feel like this will improve your life drastically..cos I could not believe the change in mine...whilst I suffered for about 3 years it did take time to fix and I do think the diagnosis of All Clear did start me on the road to recovery. This process did take a good few weeks to work though, but it was the best thing I could have done.

Sorry for nagging but I really just want help you. Take care x

Iworryalot · 04/05/2008 09:39

You dont have to say sorry ,all good advice and just what i need to here hug so thank you.
what you say makes total sense and as you have said will do no harm ,and i do believe will put me in a different state of mind and thats got to be a good thing , as i would like to more and not look as though iv the world on my shoulders .
I will not google today as your so right ,the diagnoses is not going to be right ,searching for answers and reading sooo much into results and then that result leads you on to other problems etc,etc and the nightmare continues .

cant believe the bowels are so complicated
The doc did say , the gut is the first place the outside world comes into contact with our bodies and is very sensitive to many many things ,so will try to look after mine ,going to tescos later any thing you feel would help? ,i do take pro-botic drink daily ,
thanks again x

OP posts:
cositjustisok · 04/05/2008 10:16

I am not into pro biotic drinks I just think they are expensive and I could not see any proof that they worked, but again they will do no harm so continue on them, I did start off on these when I was first in pain because it was all I could think of at the time that may work to help me. I would buy natural yoghurt. I cannot eat these alone as so boring and I do not like the taste really so i buy any other yoghurt and mix in or eat it with strawberries or it is lovey with fresh pineapple...You could try yoghurt on porridge....I know it sounds awful but when your bowel is better you will not have to eat all this stuff all the time. Eat as much of natural youghurt as you can on a daily basis for a long as possible...or until you can not bear it any more!!!!! Buy plenty of Fresh veg and fruit to snack on...Oh and also try and stay away from as many processed foods as possible with loads of gunk in it....unnecessary additives and e numbers that your bowel can do without at the moment. So buy fish, chicken in as natural condition as possible....ie: no chicken nuggets or fish finger etc. When you bowel feels better then you can introduce your normal foods slowly and see how your bowel copes. Nuts of any type are good too. Will post more as and wehn I think of them..but feel free to ask any questions, I just want to see you out of this turmoil and on to the road to recovery and you WILL stop worrying also as you are being proactive and helping yourself. Good luck and let us know how you get on, or if you need any menu ideas etc feel free to ask. Take care X

Iworryalot · 04/05/2008 10:25

Ahh many thanks again for advice starting to feel better already ,its hard to feel positive when your heads right in the middle of it all ,but im going to try to think more positively and will start with drinking more water as at moment hardly drink it at all mainly tea and f juice .
I will leave you in peace now for a while and check in later , thanks again and hope you have a good day. its much appreciated {{{hug}}}
