I stopped 9 years ago. Took me about 2 years of stopping for a while then thinking I could 'just have one'
So never 'just have one'.
Also what worked for me the final time was to have 2 fags and some matches in a secret place, so I knew I could have one if I was really really really desperate and that seemed to work better than just not having any at all in the house as it made me much more obsessed with the fact that I couldn't have one iyswim.
Over the 9 years I've come across so many people that this worked for.
Mind you they were there in that drawer for about 4 years!!
Keep at it, its so worth it in the end, I met dp a month after I stopped and he said later that if I had still been a smoker there would have been no 2nd date.

Flibbertyjibbet · 21/11/2007 00:10

Oh custy just read your post.
Shoot your dp if he won't give up as well. your defence could be that you were suffering from acute nicotine withdrawal. What a selfish dp, and what fantastic will power you have.

Hope you are making him go outside for fags as its chucking it down tonight and due to get really cold

Tortington · 21/11/2007 00:19

day three - it feel harder!

jesuswhatnext · 21/11/2007 14:24

i gave up 10 YEARS AGO (yes, i'm showing off)

one bit of great advice i had was to try and remember that the craving for a fag only lasts for 4 minutes, so, go and do something else with your hands for that 4 minutes (use your imagination )

keep going, you no longer stink!!!

Tortington · 21/11/2007 14:30

i know people keep saying that - and i even say it to dh - eww piss off smelly i say- but secrety i love the smell

weebleswobblemoreonboxingday · 21/11/2007 14:38

This Friday will be week 4 of no smoking. I'm going to the chemist later for my smoking cessation session (don't even try saying that when you're pissed) to get my patches. I've been getting dizzy the last few days so I'm going to try going down to a 10mg patch. Patches + liquorice nicotine gum = not too bad withdrawal for me.

Having done this before though, I know it's not the giving up that's the hardest bit, it's the staying off. This time when I've finished with the patches, I'm planning to keep 2mg gum with me at all times just in case. Chemist tells me there's no problem with chewing the gum whenever a craving happens, however long this may be.

Magdelanian · 21/11/2007 15:09

Day 3 for me and still going. I sometimes feel like crying. It will pass. I keep thinking it wont be so tempting to lapse this time since the smoking ban.

harleyd · 21/11/2007 15:40

i have a big problem now
its the northern ireland match tonight
that involves beer and fags

have decided to stay at home, and probably will avoid the beer
but i know im going to be gagging for a smoke

Tortington · 21/11/2007 15:42

FAWKEOFFwiththetinsel · 21/11/2007 15:44

Magdelanian · 21/11/2007 15:57

Well I will certainly be having a glass or two of wine this weekend. Dont think I could handle giving up smoking and drinking
