Well done. I'm sure it's not easy. have you read Stop Smoking Stay Cool by Richard Craze (publ by White Ladder Press)?

fawkeoff · 27/10/2007 16:50

ELASTIC i am going to invest in some non smoking books, cant hurt to read them can it.I was contemplating on whether to go out tonight with dp round the locals,i was thinking it would be easier for me to not smoke due to the smoking ban....but i just know that if i really want to have a ciggie when ive had a few to drink i will go to the shp and buy some..........so i am staying in tonight watching the x factor with no alcohol .BELCANT i would say to you that if you feel that you need nrt then take them.everyone copes with withdrawls differantly.

I stopped 87 days ago and am sitting here with a hangover, so you can definetly drink again and enjoy it, it doesnt really bother me suprisingly.
Well done anyhow, think of the less wrinkles etc thats what works for me

Elasticwoman · 27/10/2007 20:58

My brother stopped smoking cold turkey after having a heart attack at age 43. It was his wake up call after years of denial about the effects of smoking on health. That was 12 years ago and he is still smoke free with no ticker probs.

fawkeoff · 29/10/2007 12:50

feeling good today , cravings have seemed to lessen over the last couple of days.have decided to paint the bathroom while ive got a week off from college so am going to start that when DC are in bed.i have my smoking cessation class tomorrow, which i find really helpful but after spending an hour talking about cigarettes im dying to light one up when i leave i will be victorious ladies

Fawkeoff,

Am inspired by your decision to quit and use the help on MN, I have tried and failed a number of times but have a plan to try again this Friday. I found the hardest place to stop was at college as ds wasn't around so it was almost guilt free, apart from the fact I would come home, brush my teeth, spray perfume and change my clothing before picking him up from c/minder's - I know how hypocritical!

You seem to be doing really well you should be proud of yourself,

How's it going with your quiting belcantavinissima?

fakeblonde · 29/10/2007 15:05

Hi
Can i jump over here to your thread.
I finished Alan Carrs book this morning and am now def a non smoker and feel better already !

fawkeoff · 29/10/2007 17:34

MAMABEAR this is about the sixth attempt to stop smoking and i am determined that it will be my last.i am also a college student and i am resorting to sitting in the common room eating and socialising or sitting in the library doing some studying so that i wont go and have a fag.thankfully there are only 2 smoking zones on the campus so it isnt in my face that much.....but the 2 zones just happen to be at both sides of the building that most of my classes are in. I am now most worried about how i will cope when i visit family down south in under 2 weeks????? there will be drink, but they smoke in the house anyway........will cross the hurdle when i get to it

fawkeoff · 29/10/2007 17:37

fakeblond hope the thread will help you . just wanted to add that whilst cleaning my kitchen cupboards last weekend i found over a £100 worth of NRT, lozenges, micro tabs, gum and patches so i have it in if i need it

OP posts:
fawkeoff · 29/10/2007 17:38

i actually meant that family down south smoke in the garden ......ignore

OP posts:
mamabear2b · 29/10/2007 18:44

fawkeoff - Good luck with the family thing, hope they can help though with families sometimes a patch or two helps (one on each eye, then you can't find the ciggie pack!)

I'm lucky as the moment because I only have 3 days left at college before xmas (going away on placement) so hopefully when I get back I'll be rid of the habit for good.

Pain in the arse about the smoking areas although I guess you could congratulate yourself everyday for having not succumbed to temptation with small treat and thoughts of making your little one proud when u beat all the other mums in the mum race on sports days in years to come

fakeblonde · 29/10/2007 19:16

i Cant believe how easy Alan carrs book as made giving up today.
Its still day 1 i know but day 1 was the worst day last time i gave up.
My best tip so far is a small quote from his book which i keep thinking of.

You do not smoke because you enjoy it-you smoke to releive the nicotine withdrawal only !

May as well wear a tight pair of shoes all day just so you can enjpy the feeling later when you take them off !!!!!!!!!!

Dont feed the monster.

Be excited about giving up.
We have nothing to lose and everything to gain-my mouth tastes sweeter already x

fawkeoff · 30/10/2007 13:32

FAKEBLOND i know exactly what you mean about things tasting so much differant, my taste buds woke up after a few days of not smoking.i am snacking on frozen grapes at the minute....my mum said my gran swore by them when she gave up ciggies, and they are really refreshing.still wondering how i will get through the weekend when i'm away ????

fakeblonde · 30/10/2007 14:20

Enjoy everything else like good food wine and company ect.
When you really crave a ciggy remember you will have forgotton in 2 minutes anyway !
Best of all think of all those lovely mornings when you can roll over and give dp a great big kiss without having to go brush your tongue first !!!!!!!!!!!!! mmmmm

fakeblonde · 30/10/2007 14:22

I dont have the headache fawkeoff but have got a horrid chest infection.
Just been off to get antibiotics.
Its helped a lot to be honest as the last thing i feel like is smoking anyway-mostly after meals really.
I make a cuppa instead and have forgotton soon enough x

fawkeoff · 30/10/2007 15:08

FAKE you are doing really well.... ihonestly cant belive he much money we are saving, because when i went to the shop or supermarket i would also buy stuff i didnt need as well, especially the supermarket, i could spend up to £20 plus £5 odd for ciggies but now i dont have to gp to the bank for a copuple of days

Hi there
I hate to intrude but my DH is (I hope) intending to give up (he was going to give up before DD2 was born 5 wks ago but...) does anyone have any tips on how to encourage him a bit more, atm I'm a bit stressed and my efforts end up turning into nags

He has quit in the past and done really well but doesn't seem to be as enthusiastic to do it this time round (despite us having 2 children to think of)
He's only been smoking for the past couple of months and I was hoping it would make it a bit easier the quicker he got started but, as I said, he doesn't seem that bothered (he's a bit stressed at work, but he was a lot more stressed the first time he quit )

Any advice greatly appreciated

fakeblonde · 30/10/2007 21:59

But him Alan Carrs book-its inspirational, easy to read and i am actually enjoying giving up.

singledadofthree · 30/10/2007 22:02

fawkeoff et al - well done at stopping!!! i gave up years ago after 12 years of smoking up to 30 a day - even marlboros at times.

the first few days were a bit rough - although i wasnt stressed as such - my ex had just left me with the kids and life took a turn for the better. i did feel run down briefly but it soon passed - and youre right - youve reminded me how i could taste things again - was a suprise!!

anyway - well done - i havent looked back since stopping - and never wanted another one. just thought of myself as someone who doesnt smoke so didnt.

Shoelacetripper · 30/10/2007 22:04

Gave up two years ago. About the stage you're at, strange thinkgs are happening with the adrenalin. I solved it by going to see a scary film - came out totally hyper... Sip lots of water, look up what's happening to you on the web (you know what to expect next) and don't make the mistake I did and spend the next few months filling the void with curries ;)

fawkeoff · 31/10/2007 09:41

kyala why dont you encourge DH to go to smoking cessation class once a week, they will help him to pick a quit date, advise him on places and things to avoid when first stopped and they will go through all the nicotine replacement therapies they have. my dad and my dp are taking the champix medication. this is a tablet you take twice a day and it aslters the chemicals in your brain to stop you craving nicotine which makes you not want to smoke.
SINGLEDAD thanks for the encoragement...it does really help just to post on here and have someone who knows how hard it is to pat me on the back
SHOELACE it's not curries that are my prob its crisps and vanilla slices ......must stop

fakeblonde · 01/11/2007 08:41

Hows iot going mancheta ? Have you actually finished the book ? I found i was actually taking too long to read it and bolted thro last few chapters because i was looking forward to stopping. It was unplanned when i did stop as i finished it in bed about 8.30 4 days ago.I smole 2 ciggs straight off and asked dd to get rid of them then. Yest was a bit of a blip but didn`t think about ciggies for ages after i woke up today. Go for it . When you stop come on here youll get lots of god advise x
