I have given up, i was a 30 a day smoker (blush] and have now done 10 days without a cigarette!

I have used that new tablet - champix, brilliant, definately reccommend it.

FAWKEOFFwiththetinsel · 22/11/2007 13:33

sophiewd · 22/11/2007 13:47

3 weeks and 2 days for me, went to a hypnotherapist and has been great.

Magdelanian · 22/11/2007 20:54

Day 4 for me. Hows everyone else doing? I'm feeling much better today. Bit more 'normal'. I rushed up a little hill today and normally it would puff me out but not today and so soon. Hang on in there.

Hello, just a quick message to see if anyone has been successful in giving up with Zyban ? I have just been prescribed it by my GP, and although I would rather have had Champix, I thought I would give it a go. Any thoughts?

FAWKEOFFwiththetinsel · 22/11/2007 21:22

my dp was advised against zyban by the smoking cessation leader as there are many "do not take if....." factors when dealing with this product, but it is said to be as good as champix which he is using and it has been wonderful for him

Magdelanian · 22/11/2007 21:28

Hi, I've tried zyban in the past and needless to say I didnt manage to give up with it. I went over two months but I think I stopped taking the tablet too early. It was only when I went on holiday post tablets that I thought a few wont hurt. How wrong back to my level very soon. However, that was only my experience. I remember it was very effective and hardly any withdrawal symptoms as you are basically going through withdrawal before you give up smoking. The secret to any quit that is going to be the one is NOPE (not one puff ever) simple really .

fabianthedelayer · 22/11/2007 21:29

Really? Like what kind of thing? My GP said there were no risk factors, ie I don't have high blood pressure and am not a psycho etc! I so want to give up smoking as it causes such a rift between me and DH who is a non smoker and has NO IDEA how difficult this all is

fabianthedelayer · 22/11/2007 21:31

Thanks Magdelanian, have you tried champix, or have you done it all on your own? If so many many congratulations

DaphneHarvey · 22/11/2007 21:32

Just popping in to ask a practical question. Hope you don't mind.

Have given up smoking for a year to 18 months on 4 separate occasions in the past (including two pregnancies). Sadly now addicted again (what a plomper) and currently smoking about 10 a day.

Patches: are there any that are equal to or less than 10 silk cut a day in terms of nicotine? I don't want to go slapping on a patch and giving myself more nicotine than I'm already getting from the fags. But desperate to quit the habit again - for the rest of my life this time.

If you can help - thank you!

Magdelanian · 22/11/2007 21:34

Thought I would answer as I've taken this. There can be side effects as there may be with Champix/Cold Turkey/NRT. I remember finding it hard to sleep at first but it was ok after a while. If you take it the doctor will monitor you.

fabianthedelayer · 22/11/2007 21:39

Thanks for your replies, I guess I will just have to take them and hope that willpower does the rest. This smoking/ giving up thing is a nightmare. If only I hadn't started aged 13..........!

Magdelanian · 22/11/2007 21:41

Answering another question. (Though I'm no expert). Not sure about such a low dose patch. They seem quite high in nicotine. You can check with the chemist. Sounds like you've managed better than me in the past. I was on 10 a day up until last Sunday after an 8 month quit. Before that more like 20.

Its usually in a moment of weakness that I slip and think I'm stronger than the nicotine but that's bollocks and the only way to keep off is never to touch the filthy little beggars again.

Magdelanian · 22/11/2007 21:48

Never tried Champix but would if I fail this CT quit (which I'm not going to).

I was 13 (maybe 12). I read the other day that the reason young teenagers start is to make a statement 'I'm not my mothers child anymore', 'I'm tough' after that perseverance leads to nicotine addiction and social circumstances then dictate who gives up or who remains hooked forever. Well not us its our time to give up.

manchita · 22/11/2007 22:02

Daphne- this is exactly the position that I am in. I have give up for 18 months the longest and this week for 3 days but smoked again yesterday at a fellow smokers house.
I had just finished a pack of ten earlier tonight when I happened to switch on the mummy diaries on tv. I thought it was about Tutankhamen (!) but no it is about women with cancer preparing to leave their children.
It is so sad and tragic and I know this sounds dramatic but this is the reality of what we are provoking by smoking these nasty stupid little things.
I am determined to stop now. Starting tonight, right away.

manchita · 22/11/2007 22:06

And well done to you all for persevering! Keep up the good work!

DaphneHarvey · 22/11/2007 22:22

Manchita - exactly, that's my motivation too - not putting my children through the pain of losing me to a smoking related illness.

I really do hope that's enough to keep me going this time.

Having given up (thinking it was forever) and yet still lapsed four times in the past, I do truly understand that my last cigarette will really have to be my last cigarette.

Perhaps that's why it seems such a huge big deal this time!

manchita · 22/11/2007 23:47

Hey Daphne, let's encourage each other! When are you stopping?

Tortington · 22/11/2007 23:49
