For anyone who wants a boost to their general health. The suggested goals are:

EAT 10 PORTIONS OF FRUIT AND VEGETABLES EVERY DAY - if you don't usually eat much fruit and veg I would build up gradually or you could upset your digestion.

DO (AT LEAST) 10 MINUTES OF EXERCISE EVERY DAY - can be yoga, stretching or something more energetic. The plan is that the idea of doing 10 minutes is not too daunting, and having started you may well find you want to do more.

There are no restrictions on what you eat so long as you get your 10 fruit and veg as well. The focus is not on weight loss but on improving our energy levels and hopefully our general mood and well-being. Sign up below and post here to tell us how you're getting on and how you are feeling.

Basic guidance on what constitutes a portion of fruit and veg here and you can download more detailed information here (follow the link at the very bottom of the page)

I'm curious to try this - I definitely need to increase energy levels (often have a mid afternoon dip which sees me surreptitiously snoozing in a corner). Will be interesting to see if this has an effect

FrannyandZooey · 14/05/2007 19:06

Hellooooo HMC lovely to see you and welcome

I hope it will help with your energy levels, but you know I have been told the trick is to have a high protein lunch and not too many carbs, if you want to avoid the afternoon slump.

handlemecarefully · 14/05/2007 19:09

Lovely to see you too Franny . Agree, there is definitely something in the 'avoiding too many carbs' argument

NappiesGalore · 14/05/2007 19:11

it will hmc. i find that im so busy stuffing my face with fruit and veg all day that i am
never hungry
not eating crap
getting slimmer of tum and lovehandles
staying more energised
and, um, regular IYKWIM.

and quite smug too

when im doing it that is... im off the veggie wagon right now...

handlemecarefully · 14/05/2007 19:13

Ok off to Waitrose tomorrow to stock up a wide range of fruit and veg. 10 portions a day is quite a challenge, but I'm a game old bird.

I particularly like the suggestion that it may help me loose weight Nappies!

FrannyandZooey · 14/05/2007 19:56

HMC you can do it, you game old bird

NG you can take over as thread cheerleader if you like, you are extremely convincing even if you are not actually following the tenets of the thread

(and I read your post as "and, um, getting it regular IYKWIM" )

Hey everyone!
I got DP to eat some fruit! I told him I did not want him to be unable to run around after DD in 10 years time! He grudgingly ate some!
So far...fruit salad with yoghurt. Grapes, banana, kiwi, apple, pear. Probably about 2-3 portions as I made too much and we ate it all!
This evening for dinner. Tomato and red pepper sauce (home made) with pasta and spinach (do onions count?) with salad (salad leaves, spring onions, carrots, tomatoes, red onion).

Almost there!

How do I sign in?

PavlovtheCat · 14/05/2007 20:16

oh, and exercise...I had 20 mins to take items back to shops and swap for sizes that fit, while DP waited in car impatiently, ran around, then vigorously cleaned kitchen, including the cooker and washed the floor...does that count as exercise? it feels like it!

FrannyandZooey · 14/05/2007 20:18

Ah signing in, I think you have done it (I just mean show your face and talk some bollocks to me so I think I have friends on here)

onions do count, you have done well. I used to make huge bowls of fruit salad and sit and eat them all day, I wonder why I stopped doing that?

Erm I have had veg korma as inspired by anorak - contained carrots, swede, cauli, courgette, mushrooms, raisins, chickpeas, plus had corn on the side

Aviatrix that dinner sounds divine. I presume ds spent half an hour on the naughty step for that and will be having it cold for breakfast?

PavlovtheCat · 14/05/2007 20:30

Franny - I used to eat fruit salad like that too! When I was pregnant I had cravings for fruit salad and yoghurt. i ate tons of it and had a wonderulf complexion, and was very healthy through pregnancy apart from morning sickness! At one time all I could eat was fruit salad!
lol!

Cappuccino · 14/05/2007 20:43

have eaten some veg

have walked slightly

am going to bed

FrannyandZooey · 14/05/2007 21:00

well done Capp, full marks all round

Pavlov I stopped doing it when I had ds and I am wondering why

it's a great thing and so time saving - you just get up in the morning and bung fruit salad on your cereal instead of cutting stuff up for ages

Okay, breakfast unremarkable, didn't manage lunch as such, filled up on emergency stuff (including chocolate and cake , missed dinner but am now catching up with much-needed avocado, mushroom, tomato, pretend bacon and vegan mayo sandwiches. Oh, and I did have some mango and a couple of oranges early evening.

suzycreamcheese · 14/05/2007 23:17

hi peeps..
raspberries all round here!, banana, museli brekkie and then just hearty winter veg soup and homemade onion bread...was first attempt and surprise it worked and is lovely..

swimming tomorrow and lots of walking as ever...its hard to get motivated for any more when it feels like we are heading back to winter....

PLEASE....is there a dvd for fat bellied 40's people that will make me look svelte on the tum front??? please help!! am despising my belly and saw some horrendous photos and am forcing myself to 'hold that image' til i do something about it....

pear cider perry....isnt that babycham?

well i've ate fruit, walked alot and now talked about it...ah,... that feels much better!

FrannyandZooey · 15/05/2007 10:00

Suzy, I think if you are carrying extra weight on your tummy then the only way to improve things is to lose weight all round - it will mostly go from the areas where you store fat the most

if you are slim but things are just saggy then you need to tone the muscles - things like crunches, fit ball or pilates are meant to be good for this

however I would advise good underwear, eat well and exercise and try to concentrate on your GOOD parts

TooT the sandwich sounds fab. What kind of pretend bacon do you like?

I have had orange, apple, pear, raisins and kiwi. Am ruddy starving though

I am officially asleep

dd2 threw up in her cot in the middle of the night and shouted 'I'm grumpy! I'm grumpy!' (for some reason she thinks grumpy means sick, I don't know why)

so we sat up with her for a bit

and were already tired from weekend at grandfathers we got to bed late and then kids woke up at some silly o'clock cos my father has no sodding curtains ffs and it was dawn at sometime after 5

have had apple and oats and raisins

fear that veg will be replaced by coffee today

MrsCarrot · 15/05/2007 10:50

I think I should have listened to the advice about increasing intake slowly, felt quite nauseous yesterday and very windy Had a huge bowl of morrocan chickpea soup for lunch followed by dates, and apple. vegetable crisps in the afternoon (ok, they don't count!) and then roasted butternut squash with fennel peppers mushrooms courgettes and tomatoes, felafel and corn on the cob and some coriander houmous. Sounds very virtous but I didn't SMELL very virtous. Slowly but surely maybe? I've just had rye toast this morning with marmite and jam. Should prob have a walkk but it's pouring down..

NappiesGalore · 15/05/2007 12:20

herrrrrrro ladies

i snkcker at idea of me as cheerleader... ill need some fairly powerful control pants for outfit, but hey, ill give it a shot for you lot

5am start. all 3 dc decided was a good time to start the day. in about a month we wiull have moved back into our proper house and have new curtains w blackout blinds behind, so am hoping this will improve things... still...
got up with the babioes and made us all ready brek and had with maple syrup and chopped up mango. and a glass each of juice, only 1 of which ended up on the floor - pretty impressive i thought.
showered (not a s common an occurance as one would hope) and did nursery run...
then on spur of moment jumped in car with dp to come in to office.. to 'help' (yeah right) and have a Bento Box for lunch. i have a craving and theres, like, nowhere to get one in my neck of the woods.
so i napped in the car on the way up and am now mn'ing in peace and quiet whilst looking forward to lavish lunch.
yup, i think cheerleadings for me

Swizzler · 15/05/2007 12:29

I am not doing very well here. I seem to manage about 7 portions on a really good day - so far today have has apple/fruit juice/bit of rocket in sandwich . Does fruut in yoghurt count? Problem is I had to grab breakfast on the way to work (yoghurt and a muffin), then sandwich lunch.

Anyway, Franny mentioned posisble help in zapping diet, so here's what I normally have: cereal/toast for breakfast, sandwich/hot meal/snack at lunch (I get a free lunch at work 3 days a week), supper meat plus bread/rice plus veg. I try and eat one or two pieces of fruit a day. I eat too much sweet stuff. Am bfing and up several times a night with DS (7 months) and never have any time! Any ideas?
