For anyone who wants a boost to their general health. The suggested goals are:

EAT 10 PORTIONS OF FRUIT AND VEGETABLES EVERY DAY - if you don't usually eat much fruit and veg I would build up gradually or you could upset your digestion.

DO (AT LEAST) 10 MINUTES OF EXERCISE EVERY DAY - can be yoga, stretching or something more energetic. The plan is that the idea of doing 10 minutes is not too daunting, and having started you may well find you want to do more.

There are no restrictions on what you eat so long as you get your 10 fruit and veg as well. The focus is not on weight loss but on improving our energy levels and hopefully our general mood and well-being. Sign up below and post here to tell us how you're getting on and how you are feeling.

Basic guidance on what constitutes a portion of fruit and veg here and you can download more detailed information here (follow the link at the very bottom of the page)

But I have waked for 20 mins so far today. At least I'm doing something right!

TooTicky · 15/05/2007 13:37

Franny, I have the Redwood organic pretend bacon atm. I also like the tempeh rashers but can't get them v. often.
Have just had more avocado/tomato/mushroom/cucumber/pseudo mayo/pretend bacon sandwiches, shared with dd2. Pudding: orange, chocolate, handful of nuts.
Not quite virtuous but better than yesterday. Oh, and have burst blood vessels in both arms battling heavy shopping/library bags. Exercise of a kind, I suppose.

FrannyandZooey · 15/05/2007 14:03

Swizzler you are off to a good start and I think you are doing LOTS of things right.

I think most of us have found the way to crack the 10 is to have some f+v with every meal. Try to have 3 portions at breakfast for a start. I would have a banana, instead of toast, or as well as.

Take in some fruit / chopped veg to have with your lunch or just as a snack if you are working. If at home have a salad or veg soup instead of a sandwich sometimes, or just beans on toast (beans count as a portion). Your evening meal sounds fine. Just make sure there is plenty of veg with it, and pick fruit and veg with the deepest colours, and of different colours, to get widest range of nutrients.

Chopped veg and dip (hummus is good and counts as another portion), or dried fruit, are also good snacks at any time.

TooT [horror] at your arms! What has happened to them? I used to drag heavy shopping around all the time before having ds's buggy to put them on, now I have a shopping bag on wheels It is soooooo useful

MrsCarrot it can be quite a shock to the system to eat like this. Maybe go easy on the chickpeas etc at first (especially as you are newly wed)

Capp I hope you get some rest. Sorry to report that "I'm grumpy!I'm grumpy!" made me laugh, a lot. Ds thinks vomit is called "sickness" and likes to point to it in the street. "Yuk, mummy, I saw some sickness." Yes we do live in a nice area.

Nappies please describe Bento Box. In detail

f&z thanks!
i'll get pilates dvd asap..am slim built i suppose but with what looks like a much loved beer tyre around the middle..ghastly..

did nearly an hour in the pool as i had it to myself today .... heavenly!...

my mums fake bacon looks like shoe insoles...

veg and fruity count low will absorb what goodness i can from reading others posts!..

..cant get to market as waiting waiting waiting on the roof man cometh...

FrannyandZooey · 15/05/2007 18:57

Suzy well if you really have got a spare tyre round your middle then losing weight would help

exercise is the best way to lose fat from your middle and keep it off

it would be better for your health as well as helping you feel more positive about your body

(I store fat in the same place, a bugger isn't it? I would love to have big boobs or a curvy bum )

I have had

baked beans for lunch

lettuce, cucumber, tomato, beetroot, chickpea and mixed pepper salad with dinner

I wish I knew a handy rule for veg and salad portions. Can anyone make one up please?

OP posts:
TooTicky · 15/05/2007 19:24

Franny, I was carrying the bags in the crook of my elbow so as to use other hand to hold hand of/carry dd2. I don't like taking a buggy out as I find myself trying to keep dd2 in it and, in principle, I think buggies are a Bad Thing. Useful but not good. Am seriously considering some kind of wheeled receptacle but still squirm slightly at the thought.

Right, have just had peas, carrots, tomato, cuc, lettuce with dinner; orange, apple and kiwi earlier, so with lunch that's probably 8ish. Do nuts count?

Bad on the exercise front though due to rain.

MrsCarrot · 15/05/2007 19:29

I always think it's a handful of something loose or a fist size of something spooned. Not so many veg for me today, toast for breakfast, oatcakes with tuna sweetcorn and cucumber for lunch and dh just 'cooking' a Waitrose Sri lankan chicken and mango curry with spinach and brown rice and one very large glass of wine. Was going to try to only drink at the weekend but it's been one of those days

FrannyandZooey · 15/05/2007 19:49

at mango curry

TooT I understand about the buggy thing. I started using one when I could no longer carry ds's enormous girth (I am usually in too much of a hurry for him to walk everywhere). I used to often carry him and push the shopping in the buggy when he was little

Now I have a shopping trolley and am evangelistic about it. So useful, means I can go shopping once a week instead of what feels like constantly, and they don't have to be tartan old baskety things if you are not into old lady chic

OP posts:
TooTicky · 15/05/2007 19:52

What does your shopping trolley look like?

GColdtimer · 15/05/2007 20:00

Ohh, you have all been so good.

Well today didn't start well but it did get better:

Banana and orange and porridge for breakfast

Tuna salad for lunch (went out for a business lunch and did nick some of my colleagues chips though).

Carrots and hummous for an afternoon snack and just eating salmon and steamed broccoli, leeks and courgettes for dinner. I think that is about 8?

And Franny, I was going to drive to the pub for my meeting but thought of having to report that on this thread and so braved the rain and walked - 15 mins each way.

Now having a glass of wine.

And what is a Bento box. Not sure we have them out in the sticks....

Oh, and got some mixed beansprouts in my veggie box, anyone know what to do with them apart from sticking them in a salad? Ta

Sorry, have wittered on.

FrannyandZooey · 15/05/2007 20:00

will search

not one of the funky ones but perfectly adequate

OP posts:
VoodooMama · 15/05/2007 20:01

ive eaten 7 (yes seven) satsumas today, they are perfectly ripe just at that moment of the best sweetness.

I hate that about fruit, you only have a small window of opportunity for the perfect sweetness.

FrannyandZooey · 15/05/2007 20:02

Ooh hello twofalls that sounds VERY good indeed (esp the walking bit when you could have driven)

I like beansprouts stir fried with mushrooms, peppers and carrots, maybe some tofu or quorn to go with them

this thread is a wittery thread so please go ahead

OP posts:
FrannyandZooey · 15/05/2007 20:03

oooh keep cross posting

VM we have had similar observations about the ripeness of pears

You eat one on a Monday and it is rock hard. Tuesday morning the next one is perfect and by Tuesday evening the rest are sitting in a pile of putrefaction

OP posts:
suzycreamcheese · 15/05/2007 20:04

f&z ..its weird, the rest of my body is normal, in proportion thin legs and ample chest etc pretty much pre-baby.....just this blub bit..oh,its just got to go...
my first foray in organised exercise...jings!

mrs carrot..am really having one of them too! am raging that i stayed in afternoon for tradesman not to turn up and when i called they wouldn't let me finish a sentence...though said vaughan in the office is upset for you

ds is stir crazy now and i am too...

potato salad and peas and trout tonight...lucky to have anything in actually...the feckers..

VoodooMama · 15/05/2007 20:05

yes, pears. Occasionally plums do that to yer as well.
plums. pah. dont like the ones Ive eaten so far this year, must wait till summer.

Ive gone off passion fruit now, too.

VoodooMama · 15/05/2007 20:06

im a fruit grump tonight.

FrannyandZooey · 15/05/2007 20:09

TooT I cannot find my (cheapo) one, it is called a Hoppa

it is not this one nor did it cost that much but it is the same kind of shape.

OP posts:
FrannyandZooey · 15/05/2007 20:11

VM I think 7 satsumas could have that effect on anyone

I am a bit stuck when I want to binge on fruit because ds would eat nothing else all day if allowed, so I have to limit myself to the evening for real fruit action

then I feel to lazy to do all the peeling etc, I could really pack it away otherwise

OP posts:
FrannyandZooey · 15/05/2007 20:12

Suzy don't forget GOOD UNDERWEAR

and posture

FrannyandZooey · 15/05/2007 20:22

Hello!

Today I've had prune juice, grapes, 2 satsumas, leftover curry with chickpeas, courgette, mushroom, lentils, onion...

I really need to get back to pilates. Someone tell me I have to go back.
