I am an Alcoholic

ghengis · 19/08/2003 12:43

Today I have finally admitted to myself that I am an Alcoholic.

I don't have booze first thing in the morning or (usually) during the day but I drink to excess in the evening and wake up in the morning determined not to drink that evening. Only I always do and now it's making me and DH miserable.

I could really do with some support and advice from any recovering alcoholics. Help.

Ghengis, I really admire you for posting about this. Don't give up giving up. Lots of love.

ghengis · 29/09/2003 15:14

Thanks Beetroot and Janstar. Beetroot I don't feel like it has taken control of my life (yet?) but I need to have a period of sobriety to give my liver a break and to regain my self esteem. I sometimes wish I had adopted a pseudonym for this thread but it feels more real to be honest and say this is me, warts and all.

And once you post, you have to deal with the flak. You know people are going to say what you need to hear, but sometimes it isn't what you want to hear.

maomao · 29/09/2003 16:06

Good luck to you ghengis and pinetree. I just want you to know that your words and your strength brought tears to my eyes (and I'm a cynical New Yorker)! Also, ghengis, as someone who has chronic liver disease (fortunately for me it's in the mild stages right now), I'm sooooooo glad that you're thinking about your liver. I know that seems stupid in a way, but you're right that you need to give your liver a rest....

All the best, and many hugs to you both.

ghengis · 29/09/2003 17:24

Thanks Maomao. Pinetree, how is it going?

Good Luck Ghengis X So sorry Beetroot

tigermoth · 30/09/2003 22:48

ghengis, I do hope that writing down your experiences here adds to the strength you already possess. I admire what you are doing and you have really made me think about my own alcohol intake. I hope you and Pinetree get the changes in your lives that you want.

Beetroot, very sorry to hear about your mutual friend. At least you have told her, she knows she is welcome to see your friend in hospital, and after that it's down to her.

ThomCat · 03/11/2003 11:14

Ghengis - how's it going?

pinetree · 03/11/2003 19:09

Thomcat - we must be on the same wavelength I logged in today to see how Ghengis was doing. Hope you are well...

ThomCat · 04/11/2003 10:32

Hi Pinetree - I'm doing good - hope the same goes for you.

Ghenghis - are you there? It doesn't matter what you've got to tell us - ggod or bad, you just might want to talk??? Hope you're OK - it would be good to hear from you.

ghengis · 05/11/2003 11:25

Better than before: some nights totally alcohol-free and others (weekends) I'll drink a bottle of wine. I only keep 1 bottle in the house so I don't have the temptation to keep going. I feel so much better in the morning when I have had a sober night and this is keeping me motivated. Even though I drink about 3 bottles of wine a week, I feel more in control again. Thanks for thinking of me, it really helps

I went to Tesco to buy a half bottle and they had such a crap selection that I ended up buying a box instead! That was some months ago!

Where is a good place to buy half-bottles? I don't want anything flash but it would be nice to have a choice other than Stowells.

Fantastic news ghengis. Like I said before 1 bottle may seem a lot to some people but when you are used to drinking more it is a real achievement. It is great to wake up in the morning and not feel fuzzy or have an acid stomach all day. I have been doing really well too and have managed to lose the wine belly (what an attractive feature that was!!) and lose nearly half a stone. DH may not have been too enthusiastic about me not drinking but he seems to approve of the new me!!! I actually want to do things of a weekend instead of worrying am gong to throw up when in the car or grumpy because DS is making too much noise. The evenings are still hard so I have stopped buying wine unless DH calls to ask me to get a bottle on way home from work and he shares it with me or we have people coming over.
I am really grateful for you starting this post, it gave me the incentive to open my eyes and start to do something about my drinking. Still a long way to go but at the moment I am healthier and happier.
Thanks ghengis

ghengis · 06/11/2003 14:16

Pinetree you have inspired me. I too have lost half a stone just be cutting down on my booze. I find it v. hard not to booze when DH gets some cans in on the way home and phones me to see if I want him to get some wine. Willpower, that's what I need!

Well done Pinetree and anyone else who is trying to moderate their drinking.

CountessD and Beetroot, I have just checked out the Tesco wine website and they have a decent selection of 25cl bottles. Thanks for your help.
