How long till everybody forgets how venal the Tories are?

...and vote them back in to screw us all over again? Five years, or ten?

The Tory party are masters of image re-invention and manipulation of public discourse, and clearly a lot of people are stupid. But are they really REALLY stupid (5) or just really stupid (10)?

They are living rent free in your head. Labour are in power, let's see what they can do.

Zonder · 30/07/2024 11:13

The mission has started. RR saying today that as they got chance to properly look through the books they found lots of unfunded promises. JH indignant at the very suggestion. I know who I believe but some will take JHs word for it and blame labour for making cuts.

Well I’m astounded that RR thought there was enough money, as while people might shout that austerity is a choice - it’s not a choice that’s made when a country is flush with cash. In fact, I genuinely don’t think the finances could be worse than I imagine so I feel like there was some naivety on RR’s part… or some hyperbole given there is enough money for an unexpected (but deserved) pay rise for junior doctors.

TinklySnail · 30/07/2024 13:05

People say the same about labour. Let’s just see how they do.
I remember the money was all gone when Conservatives came to power.

Polarnight · 30/07/2024 13:07

Give labour a chance to fuck up...which they will.

Im 45. As long as I've been alive there has only been 13 years of a Labour government

Only 13 years in nearly 50 years says it all. Labour are a complete shit show and most people vote tory and keep doing it for good reason

How long before people shut the fuck up about it all. Election was nearly a month ago.

Antsinmypantsneedtodance · 30/07/2024 13:16

I'm hoping its less than 5 years and the labour goverment do a Liz Truss and fuck off soon. Who voted these morons in. Not many people looking at vote share. So we can live in hope of a rebellion.

3 weeks and not one single positive announcement.

So far they've

-signed off on solar farms that were advised against.
-potentially killed a load of older people.
-made independent schools more exclusive and only for the very rich.
-given an ill thought out pay rise to public sector workers.

Anything else they've done?

Before anyone comes at me.

I don't use independant schools and don't intend to.
Am very much for renewable energy (when planned appropriately)
Am not elderly and thankfully don't have elderly relatives impacted by this policy.
Am a public dector worker who will get a 5.5 percent pay rise.

I can just see how poorly thought out it all is.

Spectre8 · 30/07/2024 13:22

Well let's see how se bible Labour have been:

Had thr OBR review of public finances pre election and knew the syaye of finan es, all bs about how bad it is now they already knew

Stopping new drilling licences in north sea meaning we lost billions in tax (also got to plug that gap) and will mean we rely on imported energy more and beholden to any rises, before getting their green energy off the ground. I mean why wouldn't u get your green energy working and reducing bills and then phase out the new licensing...oh becuase that would be common sense.

Let's scrap winter fuel for anyone not on pension credit...erm why not raise the amount it's mean tested against so those just over aren't affected. That would have been more sensible ...a higher threshold.

Why would you vote Tory again? In the last 14 years they made a colossal mess of the country. Very little economic growth, public services decimated, sewage in rivers and the sea, £700m wasted on Rwandan scheme, lying and corruption so trust in politics is at an all time low. No more I say, I definitely don't want them in power again.

I do and so will every single pensioner alive now.

Thanks Mr Starmer for securing a tory win in 5 years

You could say that about the Labour Party of the 70s but Parties change. The Labour Party under Blair was very different to the Labour Party under Wilson.

What's the purpose of your thread? To call anyone who didn't vote Labour "stupid"?

Considering the Tories are "so bad", less people voted for Labour in 2024 (9.7m) than in 2019 (10.3m). And only 34% of people voted for labour in 2024. So are you trying to say that the other 66% of the UK people are "stupid"?

And the first cut they make is to pensioners - whether that’s right or not, imagine the howls of protest if a cruel heartless Tory Government had done this.

Twistybranch · 30/07/2024 14:30

In 2010 when austerity measures were brought in. Labour claimed the cuts being made were ideological and would cost lives. That the tories were using the 2008 credit crunch as an excuse.

In 2024, the Labour Party are using a ‘black hole in finances’ to implement ideological changes which include letting prisoners be released early, cutting WFP, increasing taxes etc. These policies people say will cost lives.

Labour are no better or no worse than the tories, they manipulate the public into believing that these changes are necessary or there will be grave consequences to the economy. But it’s always an excuse to implement rapid and deep change that they wouldn’t otherwise get away with.

Viewfrommyhouse · 30/07/2024 14:33

Yesterday was an absolute belter. Giving 20% pay rises with one hand whilst putting many pensioners into fuel poverty with the other. Oh well. I guess if those pensioners die over the winter months, there will be less seasonal pressure on the NHS & junior Dr's will be able to put their feet up a little and enjoy their pay rise. Everyone is a winner.

😕

Agree
And all the crap about 'looking properly at the books' as if they are private and hidden.
Utter rubbish.

Fleetheart · 30/07/2024 15:13

I know plenty of pensioners who won’t vote for that Tory bunch of reprobates! I think that anyone who would re vote the tories in now would actually be seriously lacking in brain cells. Conservative values are not necessarily bad but all the individuals in power since Johnson have been absolutely incompetent (being kind). At last we have some people in power who are adult. And yes of course the doctors and public sector need pay rises. The cost to the country long term will be much greater if their wages are not increased. Personally I would trust Rachel Reeves rather more than some of the ill informed people on this thread. And actually so would the city of london which is saying something!

Fleetheart · 30/07/2024 15:15

Furthermore, the pensioners (and all of us) will be much better served by a reduction in the cost of fuel rather than us all subsidising the mega profits of the electric and gas companies!

TooBigForMyBoots · 30/07/2024 15:18

Well fortunately they have an upcoming Leadership race where they will remind everyone of how venal they and their party colleagues are.Grin

Why should all public sector employees get a pay rise so large?
Why should pensioners lose out to public sector employees?

Dreamingofgoldfinchlane · 30/07/2024 15:18

5 years with several key members oif the current cabinet gone well before then.

Exactly. There are literally hundred of gov.uk webpages with all kinds of statistics, including financial. The IMF and OBR report of the state of the country's finances. During a GE campaign, the civil service always "open" the books for the opposition party to examine. Labour and RR are lying when they try to claim they didn't know the state of the finances. Either that or they were too incompetent to look and understand the numbers that were available to them!

Flowers4me · 30/07/2024 15:22

Listening to people after yesterday's announcement, I'd say a month! Seriously, I reckon if they aren't able to improve peoples quality of life within 5 years, the party will be out. People are desperate and impatient.

Fleetheart · 30/07/2024 15:24

@TinklySnail because their pay has been frozen again and again over the last few years.
