How long till everybody forgets how venal the Tories are?

...and vote them back in to screw us all over again? Five years, or ten?

The Tory party are masters of image re-invention and manipulation of public discourse, and clearly a lot of people are stupid. But are they really REALLY stupid (5) or just really stupid (10)?

Where did she go, the local Premier Inn for a long weekend? Its £200 ffs.

Oh don't be anal she put it towards her holiday because she didn't need it for heating - you know what l meant.

IdaGlossop · 30/07/2024 19:11

If Jeremy Hunt is found to have withheld information on the public finances from the Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR), it will be months and months before people are able to forget how venal the Conservatives are. The OBR has never before had to conduct an enquiry like the one it announced yesterday. Bad news for Hunt, whatever the findings.

Thinkbiglittleone · 30/07/2024 19:11

Currently, I would like labour to have a fair crack of the whip with at least 2 terms - with the state the Tories have left us in, one term isn't enough to see great change.

I know plenty of pensioners who won’t vote for that Tory bunch of reprobates! I think that anyone who would re vote the tories in now would actually be seriously lacking in brain cells. Conservative values are not necessarily bad but all the individuals in power since Johnson have been absolutely incompetent (being kind). At last we have some people in power who are adult. And yes of course the doctors and public sector need pay rises. The cost to the country long term will be much greater if their wages are not increased. Personally I would trust Rachel Reeves rather more than some of the ill informed people on this thread. And actually so would the city of london which is saying something!

Absolutely. The most important factor for those in power is that we can trust them. Our trust was hammered over and over by the Tories* and we just had to swallow it. We've voted now - let's give Labour a chance.

Just a few instances of their lies/lack of integrity are the £350 million a week to go to the NHS; Dominic Cummings's eyesight; contracts given to a ferry company with no ferries; contracts for PPE given to new companies run by ministers; cartoons at a refugee centre being painted over as "too welcoming" for kids; and that's without mentioning parties during COVID, or the wasted Rwanda money. They have made me so angry. I really hope they sink without trace.

SeeSeeRider · 30/07/2024 19:43

Given that the Tories were in from 1979 to 1997, it isn't an entirely crazy idea that one party can be in power for very nearly 20 years. If some kind of PR was introduced, we may never see a Tory government again, which would please me very much.

unsync · 30/07/2024 19:55

Sometime around Budget time when even more things get cut, more inflation beating pay awards are made to appease the unions and taxes go up. Labour are doing exactly what they usually do.

newtlover · 30/07/2024 20:01

I still haven't forgiven Thatcher, I'm hardly likely to forget how bad Johnson et al were
If you want to amuse yourself you can try ranking the last lot of Tory PMs in order of awfulness
WRT the winter fuel payment it was ludicrous handing it out to people who didn't need it, I knew of many people who didn't want it and gave it to charity
Personally I am enjoying the novel experience of hearing government ministers on the radio explain their policies and thinking 'yes, that could work' instead of 'wtf have I just heard? are they mad or just stupid or just utterly, utterly corrupt and self serving'

Give labour a chance to fuck up...which they will.

Yesterday was an absolute belter. Giving 20% pay rises with one hand whilst putting many pensioners into fuel poverty with the other. Oh well. I guess if those pensioners die over the winter months, there will be less seasonal pressure on the NHS & junior Dr's will be able to put their feet up a little and enjoy their pay rise. Everyone is a winner.

😕

They have not plunged pensioners into fuel poverty, they made the allowance means tested so it only goes to those that actually need it.

Fleetheart · 30/07/2024 20:15

If Labour do what they have said they will, which is to remove the privileged position of gas and electricity companies to rip us off then fuel costs won’t be so atrocious. I do have so much more faith in their policies than in the previous lot.

PerfectYear321 · 30/07/2024 20:21

Polarnight · 30/07/2024 14:08

I do and so will every single pensioner alive now.

Thanks Mr Starmer for securing a tory win in 5 years

Every pensioner alive 🤔😂

The Tories are not popular with younger voters and for the first time people are not turning Tory as they age. Eventually there will be very few Tory voters.

I hope they tear themselves apart with this leadership race, appoint somebody even more awful than the last five and then consign themselves to oblivion

Least to most awful:

May
Cameron
Sunak
Truss
Johnson

God, that was so difficult! They were all truly, shockingly bad.

Mintypig · 30/07/2024 20:25

Labour always end up taxing everyone to death, this term will be no different. Strap in, it’s a long ride.

Namechangejust · 30/07/2024 20:25

Antsinmypantsneedtodance · 30/07/2024 13:16

I'm hoping its less than 5 years and the labour goverment do a Liz Truss and fuck off soon. Who voted these morons in. Not many people looking at vote share. So we can live in hope of a rebellion.

3 weeks and not one single positive announcement.

So far they've

-signed off on solar farms that were advised against.
-potentially killed a load of older people.
-made independent schools more exclusive and only for the very rich.
-given an ill thought out pay rise to public sector workers.

Anything else they've done?

Before anyone comes at me.

I don't use independant schools and don't intend to.
Am very much for renewable energy (when planned appropriately)
Am not elderly and thankfully don't have elderly relatives impacted by this policy.
Am a public dector worker who will get a 5.5 percent pay rise.

I can just see how poorly thought out it all is.

Crikey where is the rock that you have been living in for the last 14 years ?

They won’t find anything. Labour knew the score and they got in by declaring no tax rises bla bla bla, they now have to justify what they are doing.
torys were crap but I’m not blind to the fact these guys are new in town and we don’t know what we are getting yet. I’ll celebrate next year, when I have more idea if I have any money left each month.

PerfectYear321 · 30/07/2024 20:29

TinklySnail · 30/07/2024 15:43

Because I am paid more than average as are many PSW’s and I do not feel raising my pay is necessary when there are elderly people who will be in need of help through winter.
I just don’t see it as fair. I understand not everyone thinks the same but for me it seems totally wrong 🤷‍♀️

Well pardon me, but the rest of us want functioning public services. It's not just about you.

Yes, I’m more concerned about other people’s actual poverty. But that’s my opinion. I’m in public services to help others. I would rather public services were better managed but 🤷‍♀️

Fleetheart · 30/07/2024 20:36

@Mintypig they didn’t say no new taxes, they said taxes would not rise for working people.

Fleetheart · 30/07/2024 20:43

@TinklySnail, yes I get where you’re coming from, but I do think the government has to look at the long term. We do need better managed public services for the long term. In the longer term this will help poverty, housing, the elderly etc,. I do believe it will change because the Blair government made enormous strides. The Starmer government is if anything more cautious, (as they need to be with the state of the finances), but it won’t all happen immediately. It can’t. We are in too much of a mess.

HoppityBun · 30/07/2024 20:51

AGodawfulsmallaffair · 30/07/2024 15:53

Obviously, but I know plenty who aren’t well off and aren’t entitled to pension credits. Stuffed the only people who can’t improve their finances by working more.

Then isn’t the issue the threshold below which this should be paid? Martin Lewis says it’s too low and I trust him. I know some people for whom it really helps and others for whom it’s just extra pocket money.

TinklySnail · 30/07/2024 20:57

I do agree we are in a mess. The conservative government was too weak in my opinion and didn’t deserve another term in office.
I just don’t agree with what they are currently implementing.
I would like to be proven wrong and would like a successful government.

Sorry??

Sandyankles · 30/07/2024 22:09

I’ve just been watching a clip from just a few months ago where Starmer asks the then government to commit to retaining the winter fuel payments and saying that there is a £46bn ‘black hole’. Now they say there is a £22bn black hole but it is much bigger than they were expecting.

Which is odd because £22 is less than 1/2 of 46.

It’s so disappointing. I don’t agree with many of labour’s policies but I did think that Starmer was a decent, honourable man trying to do the right thing. Turns out he lies and obfuscates as well as the rest of them.
