How long till everybody forgets how venal the Tories are?

...and vote them back in to screw us all over again? Five years, or ten?

The Tory party are masters of image re-invention and manipulation of public discourse, and clearly a lot of people are stupid. But are they really REALLY stupid (5) or just really stupid (10)?

And nobody’s losing out to public sector- we all need our public sector workers! They work for our benefit! It’s not a competition between them and us- this is our society.

Dreamingofgoldfinchlane · 30/07/2024 15:25

I wonder when the first reshuffle will be - you may well be right!

Angela Rayner will def go

David Lammy- depending on who is elected US president.

Fleetheart · 30/07/2024 15:29

even since 2019 public sector pay has fallen!

How long till everybody forgets how venal the Tories are?

You could say that about the Labour Party of the 70s but Parties change. The Labour Party under Blair was very different to the Labour Party under Wilson.

Some of the best years this country has ever enjoyed were under Wilson and Blair. Not forgetting the post war government of Clement Attlee who is ranked as one of the greatest Prime Ministers we've ever known.

I wonder if Rachel Reeves will end up being made a scapegoat. I would say Lisa Nandy is a possibility too.

@TinklySnail because their pay has been frozen again and again over the last few years.

Pay hasn’t been frozen, rises have happened albeit small.
I know because I am a public sector employee.
I also know my elder father who started work at 13 and retired aged 75 will be struggling to heat his home this winter.
It seems child poverty will continue and now we will have more fuel poverty too.
I can’t see anything good about what they are doing I’m afraid.

Fleetheart · 30/07/2024 15:38

@TinklySnail I am truly sorry to hear that your dad will struggle. I am really puzzled though as to how a public sector worker could actually think that the Tories have anything to offer an efficient modern public sector?

Sandyankles · 30/07/2024 15:39

Thatcher, Thatcher milk snatcher.

Starmer, Starmer pensioner fuel allowance snatcher.

Unfortunately it doesn’t scan but I’m horrified that they’ve done this. It wasn’t something they said they do it it just seems so spiteful and cruel.

edited for typo

And the first cut they make is to pensioners - whether that’s right or not, imagine the howls of protest if a cruel heartless Tory Government had done this.

Well off pensioners who aren't on benefits don't need winter fuel allowance.

Because I am paid more than average as are many PSW’s and I do not feel raising my pay is necessary when there are elderly people who will be in need of help through winter.
I just don’t see it as fair. I understand not everyone thinks the same but for me it seems totally wrong 🤷‍♀️

MUCHtodoAboutSomething · 30/07/2024 15:47

Labour have been in 5 minutes, and are having to deal with the absolute mess Tories have left behind. It'll take years, the country is in too much of a state. I honestly can't see it ever being remotely like it was when Blair was in. Too much has happened now.
At least there is hope for the NHS now, after Tories plunged it into the ground in favour of private health care.

Obviously, but I know plenty who aren’t well off and aren’t entitled to pension credits. Stuffed the only people who can’t improve their finances by working more.

Zonder · 30/07/2024 15:58

Polarnight · 30/07/2024 14:08

I do and so will every single pensioner alive now.

Thanks Mr Starmer for securing a tory win in 5 years

I know for a fact that's not true. Many pensioners are not on the breadline and recognise that they shouldn't be getting hand outs if they have enough money. And many pensioners have morals so won't vote Tory again.

Well you could argue young people can't work more to improve their fiances, to heat a home they will never be able to afford under a Tory government.

Beth216 · 30/07/2024 16:08

Just as long as it takes for Labour to fuck things up even further.

TravelInsuranceQ · 30/07/2024 16:08

Forget?
Some people still haven't realised apparently.

It won't take long: Johnson will be "rehabilitated" and be back before you know it 😱

😂Further? Have you seen the state of the country. Oh Tories can't blame Labour for this one!

mildlydispeptic · 30/07/2024 16:12

I'm hoping the promised Covid corruption enquiry carries enough clout to stop the venality from fading from public record.

Exactly. My neighbour used hers to go on holiday last year! I didn't vote Labour but l don't think this is a bad idea at all.

Antsinmypantsneedtodance · 30/07/2024 13:16

I'm hoping its less than 5 years and the labour goverment do a Liz Truss and fuck off soon. Who voted these morons in. Not many people looking at vote share. So we can live in hope of a rebellion.

3 weeks and not one single positive announcement.

So far they've

-signed off on solar farms that were advised against.
-potentially killed a load of older people.
-made independent schools more exclusive and only for the very rich.
-given an ill thought out pay rise to public sector workers.

Anything else they've done?

Before anyone comes at me.

I don't use independant schools and don't intend to.
Am very much for renewable energy (when planned appropriately)
Am not elderly and thankfully don't have elderly relatives impacted by this policy.
Am a public dector worker who will get a 5.5 percent pay rise.

I can just see how poorly thought out it all is.

What a load of ridiculous hyperbole. Just ask yourself why Tories are out? They're the only morons I can see. Ask yourself what their failings are. What have they done, apart from running the country into the ground and clinging on to power, changing prime minister like the weather.

Did you have a relative die in hospital on their own, while the conservative toffs partied drinking champagne, then lying about it? They are the lowest of the low, and did nothing but mock the working class, and disabled. But hey, as long as their private school mates are okay, making huge profits while nhs nurses queued in food banks. They were in for 14 years, not 3 weeks aswell, absolutely no comparison.

Sandyankles · 30/07/2024 17:10

Hyperbole? No one voted Labour thinking thinking they were going to cut an important benefit to low income pensioners - we are talking about an income of less than £12,000! Fair enough to take it from wealthy pensioners- that seems sensible, but this is far too harsh. Would Labour even have one if they’d be honest about this nasty policy?

IdaGlossop · 30/07/2024 17:20

TinklySnail · 30/07/2024 15:18

Why should all public sector employees get a pay rise so large?
Why should pensioners lose out to public sector employees?

The payrise for public sector workers is in line with the recommendation of independent review bodies. The Government gives them guidelines based on the state of the public finances. So this falls on the Conservatives, who weren't open about the state of public finances. Public sector pay fell behind under the Conservatives so a catch-up is due. Labour need to motivate workers as part of improving public services, including improving teacher retention rate. There is no good reason for pensionrrs who are comfortably off to receive the Winter full allowance.

Fleetheart · 30/07/2024 17:37

I also think it’s important that public sector work is seen as a reasonable career; hence the salaries need to keep pace with inflation. There was a time when people aspired to work in public service

Public sector employees are not low paid generally.
Public sector covers much more than just NHS and teachers and guidelines are just that, doesn’t mean you have to follow them. Look at MP’s voting for massive pay increases for themselves.
Perhaps rather than penalising pensioners who are not comfortably off they could put an income limit on it rather than whether you’re receiving top up benefits.
I know many pensioners don’t have £50k pensions a year so why not just stop those that do, like child benefit.
And yes Labour do need to motivate people to work but conservatives have been trying that for years. How is Labour going to get more people into work?
