You know the drill though, that one needs to be used up first lowers glasses to give (behave Chocolate!)

Some of us already have btech results, some have unconditionals, but it's a nervous time for most. Lots of Wine Gin Flowers

Students won't have been helped by the lack of practice papers. Really hard to know what a B looks like on a brand new paper.

Got uni accommodation and it wasn’t on her list of choices. Accommodation office closed for weekend (helpful- cheers) DD really doesn’t want it. What do we do? Help

Janus · 18/08/2018 11:34

Our accommodation is by a private firm, not the uni. Is there something similar in that area? They may be working today?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 18/08/2018 11:40

Naturalblonde, the fact that the accomodation office isn't open at least means no one else can do anything either if they are unhappy. I'd get her to phone them on Monday and let them know that's she's up for swapping with another student if anyone else wants to swap.

Dd isn’t happy either she wanted an en-suite because she vomits a lot on her periods and found it horrid at boarding school but she’s been given shared accommodation

argumentativefeminist · 18/08/2018 11:46

Fantasy if you mention that to the accommodation office they should do their best to move her

HardwickWhite · 18/08/2018 12:18

DDs accommodation have rather unhelpfully said she will hear “within the next two weeks”. Each possible halls has different set ups and she starts in three weeks so we will have a matter of days to get bedding etc sorted. I am fizzing. Angry

LoniceraJaponica · 18/08/2018 12:21

"I think the A levels have been harder this time"

I wonder if you are right. The Oxford hopeful at DD's school was predicted AAA or A*AA (I can't remember which) and ended up with ABB. He knew that one of the history papers didn't go well, but the English lit one was a coplete surprise as he thought he had done better.

He didn't even get into his "insurance" choice. I put that in quotation marks because they also wanted the same grades as Oxford, so I'm not sure why he put it down as his insurance.

LoniceraJaponica · 18/08/2018 12:22

I can't keep away from this thread Grin

Are the uncertainties about accommodation exclusively for the clearing places?

FantasyAndHope · 18/08/2018 12:26

arguementative
She has a note from the doctor so is going to ring Monday it’s more expensive £183.95 per week instead of £135.95 but better for her

argumentativefeminist · 18/08/2018 12:28

Fantasy I hope she gets the one she wants - it's definitely worth the extra expense to be more comfortable.

HardwickWhite · 18/08/2018 12:43

No, accommodation choices (5) were submitted around Easter I think, and it is DDs firm.

NaturalBlondeYeahRight · 18/08/2018 12:44

Lonicera, no DD accommodation fail is for her first choice. Stupid system, why ask her what she wanted in the first place?

NoHaudinMaWheest · 18/08/2018 12:46

Hardwick hopefully the two weeks is a covering themselves time and you will hear earlier than that.

Ellen sorry to hear that ex hasn't improved over the years.

I have just booked train for dd to go up. It makes it scarily real!

EllenJanesthickerknickers · 18/08/2018 14:16

Wow, £183 a week! DS1's accommodation was the cheapest at Warwick, but was only £80 a week. It meant he could easily live on his maintenance loan and didn't need to get a part time job. At £50/week more than the other accommodation it must have more than just an ensuite, surely?

NoHaudinMaWheest · 18/08/2018 14:19

fantasy universities are supposed to consider reducing cost of accommodation if the more expensive options are needed for health or disability reasons. It might be worth asking especially as she has medical evidence.

bruffin · 18/08/2018 14:24

Naturalblonde
Has she got non of her choices. Dd had a long list of choices at Cardiff, she has been given her first choice TBS

NaturalBlondeYeahRight · 18/08/2018 14:32

bruffin it was in the top 10 but near the bottom, there aren’t many more than 10 so you have to put most of them on there as you know. I feel like we did everything we were supposed to and still didn’t get it right in the process.
We sent an email this morning after phones said closed. They have replied saying ‘tough luck unless you have medical reasons’ which as we’ve seen, doesn’t count for much anyway.
So annoyed with Cardiff- they’ve been pretty poor through this process but DD likes it.

flatmouse · 18/08/2018 14:46

That's not good news natural - is there an option for shared housing instead?
Back from dunelm with duvet, pillows, sheets, etc. Was thinking would wash all sheets/sets beforehand to avoid the new smell, feeling. DS quite enjoyed the choosing.
Also got him his appt for Santander student account (with them currently) and sorted getting his savings account transferred to him(no longer me trustee). He even had be buying him some jeans and sweatshirts. Clothes wise need to check he has multiples of rugby training wear (washing machine expensive so need to do less loads). Not sure he needs much else apart from kitchen stuff.

bruffin · 18/08/2018 14:50

Thats a shame, Naturalblonde

catslife · 18/08/2018 15:20

Waves to boule as so far haven't found anyone else on these threads whose dd is taking Art.
dd obtained a D for her Art (Graphics) - it was what she expected and the sixth form predicted, but seems a shame to me that you can work so hard at a subject and achieve this grade. Many of her friends are still going to uni with C type grades but she wants to take an apprentice type route! Interestingly I looked up the grade boundaries and it seems that you actually need a much higher mark for an A grade in Art than most other subjects.
The statistics for AQA are here filestore.aqa.org.uk/over/stat_pdf/AQA-A-LEVEL-STATS-JUN-2018.PDF which is the exam board dd took.

voilets · 18/08/2018 16:53

Ooh Dunelm. I hope there are a few things left! We're off to Cardiff where there is a big store and DD wants to choose a few things. 'Which' judge Dunelm to be one of the better shops in UK !
I noticed today when looking for reviews on bed stores. We're finally going to buy something for ourselves too.

Catslife, well done to DD. It is true grade boundaries in some subjects are harsher. Fewer higher grades given. I know Art can be harsh. I think Languages can be too. Best of luck with apprenticeship - an Arty job sounds so interesting.

Spent a fortune on DS this afternoon - replaced his walking boots that fell apart at on his Dof E expedition, and bought him a new 70l rucksack - the one he had be using was his Dad's from university days, and the frame wore through the fabric again at the end of his DofE. He loves walking, though not many hills where he is going, but the rucksack should be useful for trips home or to friends. I offered to crochet him a blanket to take as a small home comfort, but he wasn't bothered. He has just chosen yarn so I can knit him a Tom Baker style Dr scarf instead!

Petalflowers · 18/08/2018 17:19

£183 per week!

Dc and dh hit Costco the other night, partly to buy stuff for visitors this weekend, but partly to buy bits and pieces. He’s decided not to buy bedding stuff yet, as he doesn’t know what size bed he has. Dc’s theory is that if he (ie. us) buy stuff now, we’re paying and not him, and if he gets stuff in bulk, then it’s put off when he has to start paying!

PostNotInHaste · 18/08/2018 17:20

I feel like I’m haemorrhaging money currently. DD has been able to register online and has access to her timetable now so as she knows her hours is job hunting. Fingers crossed she gets something. Hot UK Deals has been new my best friend recently !
