You know the drill though, that one needs to be used up first lowers glasses to give (behave Chocolate!)

Some of us already have btech results, some have unconditionals, but it's a nervous time for most. Lots of Wine Gin Flowers

So. I have gone from irritated to head spinningly furious. DD has just received her accommodation offer. It is self catering not catered as all her options were and is the furthest possible halls from where her subject is based (an hour by bus rather than the 30 minute walk from the five options she chose).

We will give some serious thought to how to tackle this. DD has MH issues, but we did not mention this to accommodation because they said “everyone gets one of their choices”, so we were not worried.

The only positive is that she has been allocated a flat of 5, which she might prefer to 8-10 in her chosen halls.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

argumentativefeminist · 18/08/2018 17:38

Hardwick I would be on the phone on Monday morning explaining that due to her MH problems and fluctuating abilities to care for herself (regardless of whether this is the concrete truth!) she would strongly prefer to be in catered accommodation. I reckon that'll be your strongest avenue of complaint rather than journey time etc.

PostNotInHaste · 18/08/2018 17:49

Really sorry to hear that, I agree with argumentativefeminist’s advice.

Knittinganewme · 18/08/2018 17:52

Hardwick Irrespective of whatever other decision she makes she should ask to be put on the transfer list for catered accommodation. There will be people who have been given places they do not want, there will be people who don't start at the beginning of term or who drop out later. There is always some movement.

voilets · 18/08/2018 17:57

Hardwick - do call and follow up with a doctor's letter. I heard this happen to students I know in Birmingham a few years ago . They swapped after a term but with any health circumstances it seems all unis do try to accomodate immediately so I'd be hopeful.

Janus · 18/08/2018 17:58

I’m amazed how different unis handle all this and would be so upset too.
Dd chose her first choice back in March and we chose accommodation and put a rather large deposit down (think it was about £200) so dd always knew which accommodation she got. Then as people also confirmed their place they all joined a whatsapp group set up by the accommodation company. Dd has been talking to the confirmed 7 flatmates for months now. I wonder why all unis don’t do this? The only downside I can see is if she hadn’t got in as she’s already firm friends with a couple so would have been hard to have not got in and lost this connection too.
Hope things get sorted on Monday for you.

Nettleskeins · 18/08/2018 18:12

janus ds chose his accommodation a long time ago, put down deposit and even knew which room is he is in and on which floor. And five people, but I don't know yet if he is in a facebook group with them, I daren't ask, in case they are all horrible and he hates them..Grin
we hd a massive row about the accommodation though. And he is a long way from his campus, and self catered. Still, it is his own fault, he chose it. And will get less money per week as a result.

I wanted to ds to go to Cardiff, it is much more "serious" for the subject he has chosen to do, but I am now meanly relieved that he isn't having to cope with the acccomodation (how do you spell accommodation???, let me count the ways) issue. silver lining. It was probably too far for him to deal with any problems if they had come up. Maybe he guessed this in advance. Still even the people in the bigger halls seemed to have a great great time there. I bet it will all work out, there is always lots of movement between halls, partly because there are personality clashes, or homesickness in every uni, however nice the accommodation. Or it is just too far from where you want to be, wherever that is...and people don't realise that till they see the physical alternative at uni.

Hardwick I'm sure you will get a proper answer on Monday. So frustrating worrying all weekend though.

Nettleskeins · 18/08/2018 18:16

I remember hearing people in further out halls at two unis (not ds's though) saying that you bond with the people you commute with, and once you get back from lectures there is a family atmosphere, almost like a day at work, you can switch off from the pressure. so there are advantages to being less close to campus. Conversely people in campus based accommodation were saying they didn't push themselves to socialise because it was all on tap and they didn't have a retreat to go to.

venetian25 · 18/08/2018 18:18

Sorry if this is a silly question but my DD hasn't had any confirmation of accommodation yet - is this normal, do different universities do things differently. Desperately want to get planning but in limbo at the moment.

argumentativefeminist · 18/08/2018 18:22

Venetian my uni is sending out accommodation offers over the next two weeks, so hang on in there!

venetian25 · 18/08/2018 18:25

@argumentativefeminist

Thanks - that put my mind at rest. She absolutely has to have an en-suite (sigh)!

2gorgeousboys · 18/08/2018 19:51

I'm surprised too at the fact that some of you haven't got confimred accomodation yet. I can understand if DC werere through clearing or not at first choice unis but seems strange to me.

Like janus we chose DSs accommodation and paid a deposit in April. He's been chatting through Facebook since then to people in the halls and also a couple in his flat. They've already had discussions about sharing on a toaster and having a kitty for washing up liquid!

Knittinganewme · 18/08/2018 19:57

Where the course is conditional on results then surely they can't start the accommodation process until results day? DS applied in April but I only paid his deposit when he got his accommodation offer this week,

LoniceraJaponica · 18/08/2018 20:00

I booked DD's accommodation months ago, even though she had a conditional offer. There was no choice because her course (that she is no longer going to do) is based in Derby, and only one of the halls is allocated to the Nottingham students.

I cancelled it yesterday.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 18/08/2018 20:18

dd got to choose a vague price band and put in a few requests that's it. We know nothing about what she will get, deposits or anything!

HardwickWhite · 18/08/2018 20:18

Nettles I actually agree with the travelling/bonding thing to some extent. That was actually my own situation. However, in DDs case departments are scattered across the city, and the one she has been allocated is right beside one particular department - that there will be no cross over with. Every single other halls (I think there are about 15 - 20 buildings altogether) is better located for her.

Fingers cross we'll be able to do something about it. I like argumentative's point about her ability to care for herself. Hopefully, since we have already been in contact with disability services, they will be able to help.

LoniceraJaponica · 18/08/2018 20:21

"I actually agree with the travelling/bonding thing to some extent"

So do I. Many, many moons ago when I was a student in Leeds during the Yorkshire Ripper reign of terror a gang of us used to walk down to the station together.

LoniceraJaponica · 18/08/2018 20:21

I meant to add that there is nothing like the fear of being murdered to create a close bond with your fellow students.

venetian25 · 18/08/2018 20:24

@OhYouBadBadKitten

Same here, thought we had done something wrong but sounds like this is quite normal and as a pp mentioned if the offer was conditional on results then the process can't really start until results day which makes sense now.

FantasyAndHope · 18/08/2018 21:44

Haudin
Thankyou for that info I will check it out

On a sad note dds wound from her laparoscopy is weeping discharge and blood it was done 2 nearly 3 weeks ago Hmm trip to the doctors Monday. Before she embarks on full time hours for 2 weeks

NoHaudinMaWheest · 18/08/2018 21:56

Fantasy I am sorry that she has yet another problem.

hardwick disability services have been helpful liaising with accommodation for us so contacting them should be a good move. But actually we have also found accommodation good once they are aware of the issues.

LoniceraJaponica · 18/08/2018 21:57

Oh no Fantasy. That doesn't sound good. What a rotten year she is having.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 18/08/2018 22:01

If it's started weeping when it wasn't I'd be phoning 111 and asking if she needs an ooh appt.

Good advice from Kitten. It sounds like it is infected, and probaby not a good idea to wait until Monday.

AtiaoftheJulii · 18/08/2018 22:06

Lol, I've just pm'ed Fantasy! Not necessarily infected though.
