Not the end of the threads, just this chapter of life. We'll keep going, don't worry!

However! Not to be used until this one is done

Bill Bryson not Brydon

MsAwesomeDragon · 26/06/2018 20:20

I don't know about the toilets Ursula, but I think there are proper toilet and shower blocks as well as portaloos. From the look of it, the people involved will be pretty civilised with their use of the toilets, even if the toilets themselves are portaloos.

Glad your kitchen is ordered drummer, I imagine you are really ready for an actual kitchen now, you've been without one for a while.

raspberryrippleicecream · 26/06/2018 20:32

DD is safely arrived on her Italian holiday, and says the apartment is lovely, but they've realised none of them really know how to cook!

Good news drummer.

*Ursula that's just awful

LoniceraJaponica · 26/06/2018 20:53

DD and her friends took a suitcase full of cereal and super noodles!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 26/06/2018 21:26

My dd might see yours then MrsAD :)

Sun sun sun here it comes :)

Oh I do love a bit of sun

DS has spent the day with his GF - thankfully because she was nowhere to be seen while the exams were in full flow. His GF's parents are childminders. So DS and his GF have been chasing tots all day and making sure they are slathered in sunscreen. DS loves kids. It was pretty much their joint idea of heaven. When he's done being academic and stuff and all this poncey Cambridge malarkey, I'm pretty sure he'll be a teacher.

Kids really do surprise you.

littledrummergirl · 26/06/2018 21:54

Rofl at toilets in the kitchen. I can't wait to have a real kitchen again although the trailer has been a godsend.

Ds1 did a load of washing today and hung it out to dry. He is beginning to practice his life skills. Just the cooking to perfect now or he will be eating pot noodles and take out in September.

Raspberry I hope they find a cheap local restaurant or someone in the group finds an unexpected talent in the kitchen.

Knittinganewme · 26/06/2018 23:30

DS agreed that he would choose and cook one meal a week. At some point he's going to realise that if he picks something that freezes he could cook once for six and cover the meals for three weeks. Tonight's meal was delicious but used a frying pan and three saucepans. We talked about the relationship between impact and effort and he decided to sideline that particular recipe.

Downeyhouse · 27/06/2018 02:45

Woke up in the night and saw the worsening situation on Saddleworth moor. I know you said you were away from the fire Ursula but I hope that is still the case. Stay safe.

LoniceraJaponica · 27/06/2018 05:43

I saw the fire on the news last night. It lookd horrific.

MrSlant · 27/06/2018 06:12

Hope you are ok Ursula looks awful on the news. My family are on the Yorkshire side so I know the area well. Heartbroken for the beautiful moor and all the different species.

Having my mummy guilt now, just about to leave for hospital for a planned op leaving DS1 in charge of the house, dogs and his brothers. Not quite the 10 days on a Greek island post exam standard. He seems pretty excited to do it though, everyone has their different idea of fun!

LoniceraJaponica · 27/06/2018 06:14

I hope it goes well MrSlant and wish you a speedy recovery.

Downeyhouse · 27/06/2018 06:36

Good luck Mr Slant and great to hear ds is ready to step upannd run the show in your absence.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 27/06/2018 07:07

Good luck MrsSlant, I hope it goes well.

Ursula it looks awful. Is it peat?

MsAwesomeDragon · 27/06/2018 07:10

Get well soon MrSlant Flowers Don't feel guilty for ds needing to help, it will be good for him to feel that adult responsibility for a little while. How long are you likely to be in hospital?

UrsulaPandress · 27/06/2018 07:36

Good luck with the OP MrSlant.

Yes it's peat. Headline news in the DM on line. Although no one ever gets locations right.

doistayordoigo · 27/06/2018 07:37

Just dropping in to say I am here and reading everyone's posts, but only seem to get 5 minutes in the morning before work, so haven't had time to post Smile

PandaG · 27/06/2018 07:57

Been reading the news about the fire - looks awful.
All the best for your op MrSlant.

Knittinganewme · 27/06/2018 07:59

The fire is the lead item on the BBC news website this morning, presumably it's an item now because of the evacuation.

Have a good rest MrSlant, they will manage without you and you don't need to do everything yourself.

HesMyLobster · 27/06/2018 08:11

Will be thinking of you Mr Slant, hope all goes well. Good on your DS for stepping up, he sounds brilliant.
Ursula I hope you're all safe, it's horrific, I just can't believe somebody could have started it on purpose Angry hope they're caught.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 27/06/2018 09:59

Peats a bastard when it gets going :( so hard to put out as it smoulders underground

OP posts:
Nettleskeins · 27/06/2018 12:57

MrSlant very good vibes for the operation, and I'm sure your son will be very sensible.
Dragon was it you whose dd has "gone back to school" again? Grin ds1 is in school now having a lesson Hmm he seems quite relieved to have a reason to get out of bed (not really in your dd's league but the friendships and the camaraderie of an institution take some replacing)

We are buying a tuxedo for ds today. So far he has been very difficult, but he is perking up at thought of the Prom and an end to self-imposed Limbo.

We are also preparing for an impromptu party tomorrow, which is causing many arguments. We bought food and drink this morning and I've tidied up a bit, but it is like getting blood out of a stone to organise things. Dd has set off to Hyde Park, instead of tidying the Gazebo. Dh has been tearing up boxes. Ds2 has gone to an induction day.

Ursula If only it would rain. Sad It just seems so unstoppable.

Nettleskeins · 27/06/2018 13:01

I was reading A Walk in the Woods by Bill Bryson [Downey!!!] a year ago and I think he mentions the fires that used to consume coal mines in Appalacians - they used to go on underground for a long time. Or is that my imagination.
Ursula have there been fires like this before that have been successfully put out, or is this the biggest?

NoHaudinMaWheest · 27/06/2018 13:29

mr slant good luck with the op and recovery. It is great that ds is stepping up and excellent practise for him.

The fire looks terrible. We really need some rain.

Dd still has a choral society concert next week but otherwise feels as if she should still be revising.

HesMyLobster · 27/06/2018 15:26

DDs are back from London. Today they have both cleaned rooms including washing all bedding and hanging on the line!
Then this afternoon they have been strawberry picking at a local farm and brought home enough to feed the entire centre court at Wimbledon! 🍓Grin

DD has purchased some fake tan and asked me to apply it in a desperate attempt to even out the assorted tan lines she's acquired before prom on Friday.
She has never been anywhere near fake tan before - I blame Love Island!
