Steak to the boil

Hi I posted a meal I made recently and thankfully most people backed me up and agreed it was normal, it helped settle a huge argument with my other half.

I just wanted to mention 1 more thing and see what people think. I've been buying these sirloins from a brazillian shop (not the same as sirloin steak in the uk)

Then I cook them in a pot / bring them to boil and my partner thinks it's wrong because you're meant to fry them.

I keep saying it's not sirloin steaks it's a brazillian sirloin which is completely different and I'm cooking it right.

Can anyone help explain to him he's wrong? I know it's small but it has caused a lot of arguments in the kitchen, and this site helped me a lot yesterday in finding the right name for the food I made.

Again this is not a sirloin steak in the uk, it's not steak... it's a brazillian sirloin so remember that. Thanks!!!

If those are picanha, is that not normally grilled/barbecued?

powerhousesandra · 19/07/2023 10:30

Umm it's a brazillian sirloin not a sirloin steak so I think boiling is the right way, haven't seen picanha before will Google that now

Brazilian sirloin is a picanha I think so would barbecue or griddle it. Not boil it. I can't think of any steak cut I would boil except braising steak in a casserole.

NameChangeAgainChange · 19/07/2023 10:34

Never heard of anyone boiling picanha.

Ostryga · 19/07/2023 10:34

It’s picanha and just asked my best friend who is from Brazil, she said you ONLY cook picanha on the churrasco unless you’re making picadinho but your picture doesn’t look like that.

powerhousesandra · 19/07/2023 10:45

Is picanha a steak? As this is a brazillian sirloin not a steak I've been told apparently

Is it the same bit of the cow or are Brazilian cows different?

BanjoKnockers · 19/07/2023 10:53

I don't think anyone can really be right or wrong on something like this. Does it taste nice? Then it's ok!

Picanha is the sirloin cap. So yes it’s steak, from the same part of the cow as sirloin, just higher up and with a larger fat cap.

dementedpixie · 19/07/2023 10:55

If its from a cow is it not still a steak with a different name?. Do you boil it with anything? Surely you get more flavour by grilling or frying it

BIWI · 19/07/2023 10:56

I can't see how any kind of steak would work, being boiled. Surely it would just toughen up?

Zooeyzebra · 19/07/2023 10:58

Did you misread an American recipe instructing you to broil it?

Chemenger · 19/07/2023 10:59

I assume you mean you are making a stew, not just boiling in water? In which case it's fine to use any cut of steak, it might just be unnecessarily expensive if you use really good steak. Browning first will make it taste nicer, imo.

Zooeyzebra · 19/07/2023 10:59

Broiling is the same as grilling

SiobhanSharpe · 19/07/2023 10:59

Even braising steak is not generally boiled!
As the old saying goes 'meat boiled is meat spoiled.'
i.e. gently simmered in flavoured liquids (stock, wine etc) rather than just boiled in water.

dementedpixie · 19/07/2023 11:00

Boiling sounds wrong for steak
Maybe you have misread broiling which is grilling

massistar · 19/07/2023 11:01

Yeah I know @SiobhanSharpe . I didn't really mean boiling. Just as in cooking in liquid! Grin

trulyunruly01 · 19/07/2023 11:08

Even braising/stewing/brisket is not boiled. Low and slow is the rule for these cuts.
Any steak should be grilled/fried/bbq'd. High temps are required as there is not so much fat on these.
Is your boiled Brazilian sirloin secret recipe not very chewy? I suppose it's a good way to keep everyone at table and not racing off to telly or iPad.🤣
Having said that, if you have cocked up a recipe, you will never beat me with the dumpling so big it ran down the side of the cooker, nor the infamous Turkey Without Breasts of Xmas 1988.

Love it! WinkWink

CC4712 · 19/07/2023 11:20

OP- Where did you get the idea to boil it? Are you putting the meat in a stew, or boiling it in water and then eating it?

If the later- you are completely destroying one of the best steaks! 😝

I've always cooked picanha on a hot BBQ with plenty of salt

powerhousesandra · 19/07/2023 11:28

Hi not making a stew having it with spaghetti, it's a sirloin not a steak but i boil in water and then have with spaghetti for our supper

This isn’t real, surely??

minipie · 19/07/2023 11:32

That looks exactly like a sirloin

And your picture of it cooked looks like it’s been fried or grilled. Boiling it in water wouldn’t create those brown bits.

powerhousesandra · 19/07/2023 11:33

This photo is from when my husband fried it but usually I boil it I just didn't have any photos of what we had with it to show we are not making stews

OP posts:
BIWI · 19/07/2023 11:34

it's a sirloin not a steak

Er ... sirloin is steak!

Do you have any knowledge about food and cooking at all, @powerhousesandra, or are you just taking the piss out of us all?!
