Is anyone else interested to see what happens here.

They are going to announce the Oscars nominations around 1.30pm today. If you are interested you can livestream at Oscar.com, Oscars.org,

I am hoping for nominations for Demi Moore and Marianne Jean Baptiste in the best actress categories, and also hoping for a few other surprises.

Nickel is prime only not purchase.

So dune is only choice it seems. £4.99 on Amazon

Supergel1 · 01/03/2025 16:39

@burburnoutbabe Damn. Thank you. Really trying to cut down on what I spend on subscriptions hence not having Prime. Thank you

burnoutbabe · 01/03/2025 16:46

Seen sing sing (best actor nominated)

Enjoyed far more than I expected for a prison movie -all very pleasant. 3.5/5. Won't win anything as it's all a bit lightweight.

colouringindoors · 01/03/2025 18:46

Ooo I'll be watching Nickel Boys tonight then!
My Top 3 for best Pic

My scores - Best picture and also for other films I've seen nominated under other categories.

Anora - 4 I really enjoyed it! Funny, slick and heartfelt. Thought the ending was inspired. Would watch again
The Brutalist - 5. Epic in scale, thought-provoking themes. Adrian Bridy is excellent, Felicity Jones also v good
A Complete Unknown - 4. Enjoyed far more than I expected. Convincing 60s vibe, Chalamet impressived with Dylan music, voice and posture.
Conclave (not seen)
Dune: Part Two - 4.5 Visually stunning, sound too. Interesting story drawing from world religions. Worm ride amazing (effects).
Emilia Pérez - not watching on principle
I'm Still Here (not seen)
Nickel Boys (watchin tonight)
The Substance (not seen)
Wicked - Not my cup.of tea. Found trailer too fake.
A Real pain - 4. Personally very triggering but 2 leads amazing, so well written.
Nosferatu - 3.5 visually amazing, attention to detail in gothic atmosphere. Slow, but well researched - lots inc re Nosferatu folklore so not simply a Dracula story.
Wild Robot - 5 Just so so beautiful animation of book' pastel sketch drawing style Animation: 5
Maria - 4 visually stunning, opposite to Nosferatu. Jolie excellent - has she been nominated anywhere?

burnoutbabe · 01/03/2025 20:18

The apprentice -3.75

Enjoyed this more than I thought (having only decided I should watch it this morning)

Jeremy strong far better than Sebastian stan. Overall a sympathetic treatment of trump showing he was loyal to his mentor /lawyer. I am no fan now of trump but I used to like him during his apprentice show so that helped.

colouringindoors · 01/03/2025 22:24

Nickel Boys 4.5 Hard watch. First person cinematography makes it a very personal telling of this awful piece of US history.

colouringindoors · 01/03/2025 22:28

Surprised Nickel Boys wasn't nominated for Cinematography

Supergel1 · 01/03/2025 22:47

Ok my votes - films I've seen that are up for awards.

Best picture
The Substance 5
Anora 4
Conclave 4.5

Other categories
A Real Pain 4
Nosferatu 3.5

The Brutalist - seeing tomorrow so TBC

Realised today I've been so unexcited by the Oscars this year. Usually love it and watch all the films but couldn't even be bothered to watch Dune 2 at home this evening. Can't believe I've seen so few.

VictoriaSpungecake · 02/03/2025 01:34

I have now watched all the films nominated for Best Picture. I have revised some of my marks after a bit of reflection. I saw Dune this pm after being encouraged by your positive reviews. It isn't for me, and I think I have had a bit of a Chamalet overload, what with him being associated now with both artistic genius (ACU) and the messiah in Dune. It's too much, although he made riding across the desert on gigantic worms seem very exciting.

Anora - Very good. Fantastic performance by Mikey Madison but script not as great as it thinks it is. (3.5)
The Brutalist Brilliant film, elevated by a truly fantastic performance by Adrien Brody. (5)
A Complete Unknown Not bad. Interesting subject. (3)
Conclave Good. (3)
Dune: Part Two Not my cup of tea but watched because you all said it was good. It got really good near the end, but I'm still not into it. (2.5)
Emilia Pérez Strange musical with very trite lyrics and unintentional anti trans message. (1)
I'm Still Here Harrowing historical piece. (3)
Nickel Boys Another harrowing piece, which makes Innovative use of 1st person which is by turns clunky and brilliant. (3.5)
The Substance Loved it. Original and bold. (5)
Wicked Enjoyed the first half and then suddenly came to my senses and realised that I'd been drawn in by the amazing sets and choreography, but that I really didn't like it at all, or many of the performances. (2)

Well done! I am about to start nickle boys. Just what one wants early Sunday morning.

I think dune is probably a good movie for those into the books and that sort of genre. It's not really a stand alone film.

burnoutbabe · 02/03/2025 14:40

Real pain seen -4.25 /5. Loses a bit as no peril not even the mildest of peril. But I enjoyed it. Both actors are great in it.

burnoutbabe · 02/03/2025 15:37

Nickel boys finished! 2/5
Confusing and didn't like the style at all. Didn't even find it harrowing.

So there we are.all done now! Will this thread also be the Oscar discussion thread? I am staying up!

SocksAndTheCity · 02/03/2025 16:17

I'll be staying up @burnoutbabe ; I'm going to see the animated short films shortly and then it's nap time before tonight 😀

I've only seen six out of the ten nominees for Best Film which is unusual for me, but I've seen twelve of the nominated films in total including Wild Robot yesterday, which was stunning - I'm so glad I went to the IMAX (and ditto The Brutalist which was on after it).

My favourite is still The Substance, but I think The Brutalist deserves best picture despite not bring perfect. It's an incredible achievement for such a (relatively) low budget, although I suspect Anora's going to get it.

I await @VictoriaSpungecake 's aggregated scores 😁👍

VictoriaSpungecake · 02/03/2025 16:38

burnoutbabe · 01/03/2025 09:14

I realised too. Only 13 films would need to be seen to have captured

Best picture /best director plus all 4 acting.

Extra 3 are
Real pain
Sing sing
The apprentice

So I shall try and get them done soon (not by Sunday lol)

I had already seen The Apprentice, but watched A Real Pain and Sing Sing this morning. I actually loved them both and think that a couple of films on the Academy's best film list should have been ousted and at least one of these two films should have been nominated. I loved that they both dealt with difficult and painful topics with a lightness of touch so that you found yourself laughing one moment and crying the next. They lacked the gravitas of some of the nominated films, but there is a place for lightness in art, I believe. It is an absolute travesty that Emilia Perez made it onto the nominations ahead of these two films.

Thanks to you @burnoutbabe I have now watched all 13 films that cover the main awards.

I will add up the scores and announce our best film before the Oscars red carpet and we'll see if ours matches the Academy's choice.

Now I am going to catch up with neglected housework See you later.

@burnoutbabe I don't seem to have your marks for The Brutalist and Conclave.

OP posts:
burnoutbabe · 02/03/2025 17:30

conclave was 4.5, i really enjoyed it and it had a good story with peril! and drama!

Brutalist was 3.5.too long and story didn't grab me hugely. the whole sexual assult passed me by when watching it.I thought he was being sick at that point.

So my top marks went to Substance. But i enjoyed Conclave more overall and would re-watch. And its the one i would have watched no matter what anyway. the rest i only watched for this challenge (bar Wicked and Dune which i was happy to see but would not rush to cinema to see)

VictoriaSpungecake · 02/03/2025 17:47

I've totted up the marks everyone. The (un)official MN award for Best Oscars-Nominated Film goes to....The Substance!!!

The Committee comprised 10 voters, only 2 of whom saw and voted on every single film nominated for best picture - @burnoutbabe and me, @VictoriaSpungecake Some people only cast one vote, but I guess people voted with their feet. The breakdown of votes is as follows.

  1. The Substance (28.5 marks)
  2. Anora (25.5)
  3. A Complete Unknown (23.5)
  4. The Brutalist (22.5) AND Conclave (22.5)
  5. Dune 2 (21.5)
  6. Nickel Boys (15.5) AND Wicked (15.5)
  7. I'm Still Here (11)
  8. Emilia Perez (5.5)

Special thanks to @burnoutbabe for keeping us all abreast of where to watch all the films.
