VictoriaSpungecake · 23/01/2025 08:51

Is anyone else interested to see what happens here.

They are going to announce the Oscars nominations around 1.30pm today. If you are interested you can livestream at Oscar.com, Oscars.org,

I am hoping for nominations for Demi Moore and Marianne Jean Baptiste in the best actress categories, and also hoping for a few other surprises.

Marks out of 5

Bridget Jones 2
A Real Pain 4
The Brutalist 4
A Complete Unknown 3
Better Man 5

SocksAndTheCity · 27/02/2025 09:17

Which Oscar is the Bridget Jones film nominated for, @ARainyNightInSoho ?

Supergel1 · 27/02/2025 18:12

VictoriaSpungecake · 27/02/2025 06:31

@supergel, I'm not sure if I've asked you but would you be willing to give the films you have seen a mark out of 5?

Are we just doing best picture nominations or any category? 😀

RaininSummer · 27/02/2025 22:55

Victoriaspungecake... I love your long analysis. I agree that there is a lot more story to be told there for Dylan and Baez. I am definitely going to investigate her more. I have been a Dylan fan for 40 years but she is new to me other than being a name of the era. I found the Pete Seeger connection fascination and have read his wiki today. I wonder if Dylan kept in touch with Pete and his wife after the ructions in Newport. I don't think he's a great people person and this came over in the film. I enjoyed the film immensely.

burnoutbabe · 28/02/2025 15:56

Just beck from complete unknown.

It was boring to me. No great peril or even mild peril beyond "would he sing a crowd pleaser at the end". Everyone seemed nice to each other.

Least tc is pretty to look at and Ed Norton is always amazing in anything. 3/5 for me

1more to go! Nickel boys.

Awardandpeace · 28/02/2025 19:25

My marks out of 5 for the ones I’ve seen,

A Real Pain 5 - shame it’s not up for Best Picture but I hope Kieran Culkin wins best supporting actor.

Wicked 4 - I do like a musical

Emila Perez 1 - I managed five minutes before I had to turn it off, I don’t like a musical that much!

The Substance 3.5 - Brilliantly bonkers.

Anora 3.5 - I found Ivan so unbearable, I know that was probably the point.

September 5, 3

Betterman 4 - I only went because my daughters wanted to see the monkey but it was surprisingly really good.

Conclave 4 - The cinematography was great. I hope Isabella Rossellini gets the Supporting Actress award.

Dune 2, 3.5

A Complete Unknown 3.5

Maria 3 - stunning cinematography. I thought Angelina Jolie might get a Best Actress nomination for this.

Wallace and Gromit 5 of course!

Best Picture
Anora: enjoyed it but very male gaze with all the sex scenes and sex work is work, etc.
The Brutalist: really want to see it. Will hopefully catch at the cinema.
A Complete Unknown: not seen it yet. Not that fussed as not a Dylan fan but will watch for Chalamet.
Conclave: enjoyed it. Don’t know why it’s getting quite so many plaudits, though.
Dune: Part Two: enjoyed it.
Emilia Pérez: I’m not watching that fucking shit in protest at him being nommed in the actress category.
I'm Still Here: want to see this.
Nickel Boys: very much wanted to like this and thought I would, but the visual style was so offputting. You’ll either love it or hate it.
The Substance; brilliant, my fave film of all those nominated but it won’t win. I really hope Demi gets best actress and isn’t gazumped by a bloke.
Wicked: I’d rather stick pins in my ears.

Not nominated for best picture but I think it should have been is A Real Pain which was really, really great. Hope Culkin gets the supporting actor award.

And one of the nominations for International feature that I’ve seen is The Girl with the Needle. Harrowing und unrelenting misery but a really great film. Do see it if you can handle the subject matter because it’s just excellent,

Best picture:

Anora: Filmed with a very male gaze. Plus all the sex scenes verged on the uncomfortable. Found out today that they didn’t have an intimacy coordinator which has also made me uncomfortable, I do like Sean Baker films, and Mikey Madison is good, but see above for why I didn’t love this. 3 out of 5

The Brutalist: absolutely brilliant. It won’t win best picture but Brody and Brady should win for their work as lead actor and director, respectively. 5 out of 5.

A Complete Unknown: I’m not a Dylan fan and went into this knowing very little about him. Came out still knowing very little about him except he seemed like a narcissist and a knob. A very average biopic and I’ve seen Chalamet perform much better. He shouldn’t have won the SAG award and I hope he doesn’t win this. Monica Barbaro as Joan Baez was much better, and Edward Norton made a lot out of a small role on paper. 2 out of 5 for their performances.

Conclave: enjoyed this. Solid film with a great ensemble cast. 4 out of 5.

Dune Part Two: enjoyed this. TC much better in this than as Dylan. 3 out of 5.

Emilia Perez: I refuse to watch this on principle at a man being nominated in the best female actor category. 0 out of 5.

I’m Still Here: haven’t seen this but would like to. I’m guessing at least 4 out of 5!

Nickel Boys: hated the visual style so much it ruined the film for me. 2 out of 5. It could’ve been great.

The Substance: brilliantly subversive and funny. I really hope Demi wins because unfortunately Coralie Fargeat won’t win anything. 5 out of 5.

Wicked: not my cup of tea so won’t be seeing this. 1 out of 5 because I know I’d hate it.

Special shout out for A Real Pain which wasn’t nominated in the best picture category but was a great little film. 4.5 out of 5.

Edited

Thank you. According to the committee rules (which I am just making up) you have to see the film to vote on it, so I am not recording your vote for I'm Still Here. Otherwise, you have have watched an impressive number of films. Brilliant.

VictoriaSpungecake · 28/02/2025 22:53

I saw I'm Still Here Tonight. I have never longed for a film to end so much - apart from the time I saw a rather tedious 3hr "experimental" stage play with no interval where you weren't allowed to leave the auditorium even to go for a pee.

It isn't that the film isn't good. It is excellent. But it is such a harrowing watch. I spent the two hours with a knot in my stomach and it made me wonder what purpose it serves to have an audience endure the trauma experienced by the original victims.

That said, I loved the film's realism and I adored the music. Unfortunately, the music did not offer respite from the Grimness of the story.

4/5

None of us has yet managed to watch all the films nominated for Best Film. I wonder if anyone is going to achieve that. Who will be the first?

I have two films left to watch, and plan to see Nickel Boys in the morning and Dune in the afternoon.

Yes we could vote many different ways.

Films i would like to watch again -conclave
Better arty films which are fine to watch once. Anora /substance.

Films probably great but I found bleak or depressing -brutalist or I'm still here.

Musicals so I am happy to watch again as I like music. Wicked /emillia

Leaves dune (liked 1st one, 2nd seemed just okay) and complete unknown (better than last years meastro but very shallow)

Least after this I can go back to watching un/subtitled stuff that is fun! I probably enjoyed "the gorge" on Apple TV more than 5 of these movies!

You'll beat me then as I have nickel boys Sunday pm.

SocksAndTheCity · 28/02/2025 23:03

I doubt anybody has the wherewithal to pay what it would cost to make me sit through Emilia Perez, Dune 2 and Complete Unknown, @VictoriaSpungecake 😁

I would urge you to see I'm Still Here if you can @ConstantlyFuriosa . It's incredibly tough to watch given that it's a real family story, but I think it's going to be one of my films of the year and Fernanda Torres' performance is worth the ticket price on its own.

I can't wait to be done with the Oscars films. I am looking forward to seeing Bong Joon-ho's latest Mickey 17.

I’m lucky to have a Cineworld close to where I live and I have an Unlimited card which is fantastic if you like watching films.

burnoutbabe · 01/03/2025 09:14

I realised too. Only 13 films would need to be seen to have captured

Best picture /best director plus all 4 acting.

Extra 3 are
Real pain
Sing sing
The apprentice

So I shall try and get them done soon (not by Sunday lol)

Oh, I'd love to have done that. It would make following the Oscars ceremony more interesting. I have already seen The Apprentice, which I would probably give 4/5 stars.

OP posts:
burnoutbabe · 01/03/2025 09:58

So I checked and apprentice can be rented for £5 and sing sing is free on prime.

So weekend sorted!

71Alex · 01/03/2025 13:45

Conclave - 2.5
A Complete Unknown - 4

burnoutbabe · 01/03/2025 15:14

Annoying! Nickel boys now on Amazon prime! (For me as paid to see it tomorrow at cinema)

Supergel1 · 01/03/2025 15:41

Given I'm not willing to watch Wicked or EPerez I have four noms yet to watch. Any thoughts on what I should prioritise tonight? Can only watch something I can stream!

A Complete Unknown (don't think this is online?)
Dune: Part Two (think I can rent from anywhere)
I'm Still Here
Nickel Boys (someone just said this is on Prime. Can I rent it without subscribing to Prime?)

Once I've seen The Brutalist tomorrow I will report back on my scores out of five just in time to watch live from the red carpet!
