Is anyone else interested to see what happens here.

They are going to announce the Oscars nominations around 1.30pm today. If you are interested you can livestream at Oscar.com, Oscars.org,

I am hoping for nominations for Demi Moore and Marianne Jean Baptiste in the best actress categories, and also hoping for a few other surprises.

Conclave, Substance, I'm Still here are still on my list to see... but not sure how.
Ideally in a Cineworld cos it's free for me at the mo...

I'm stlll here came to cinemas last Friday so should be on to see if Cineworld have it

I am using my work "discount platform" to get odeon tickets for £6 off peak -covers Monday to Thursday -to make it cheaper.

burnoutbabe · 24/02/2025 08:13

Oh be substance I got 30 days free mubi to watch at home. Offer via Facebook. Or 7 days free if you sign up via Amazon prime.

Brutalist: thoughts... trying to avoid spoilers. It has that Epic feel but ikwym @ConstantlyFuriosa cant' quite put my finger on something about it.

I found it hugely thought-provoking. Lots of themes around power, which the assault was integral to in my opinion. Lazlo's character had no power throughout.

Harry's reaction to Elizabeth's announcement at the dinner interested me. Had he experienced something similar? In that case, who is The Brutalist?

I thought the cinematography was integral to the atmosphere and story too. The mountain quarry scene in Carrera was monumental.

The epilogue felt a bit stuck on. But I guess the aim was to communicate that Lazlo had a successful career despite the events of the film. And I found it very powerful that Sofia was speaking at a big public event, given how we saw her in the first parts of the film.

Off to see Anora tonight 😊 my cinema has sensibly added a couple of dates following the Bafta win... tonight's nearly sold out!

I'm seeing Anora at 11.30 this morning at my local Odeon - talk about shoe horning it in! (It has 15 screens and most of them are showing Bridget Jones)

burnoutbabe · 24/02/2025 09:05

Oh my local Cineworld is showing a new Oscar movie every day -Tuesday is conclave.

Crucible · 24/02/2025 09:14

I am not so sure that Gascon will win (which would in itself be ridiculous) now the racist bigoted tweets Karla Sofia Gascon posted in 2016 have been exposed by a journalist. They are a thoroughly hateful person.

I've seen Anora twice and I definitely didn't see anything that fits the definition of pornographic, @colouringindoors ?

There are nude scenes and sex scenes in it just like many other films, but nothing particularly gratuitous and if anything I thought the everyday mundanity of sex work (to sex workers rather than onlookers) was very well portrayed, and likely because actual sex workers were involved in the production, just as they were with Tangerine.

It's many years since I worked in strip clubs, but it seems that not much changes. I did want to punch the gormless little shit she takes up with, mind.

Yeah pornographic is probably not the right word, I was struggling to articulate the degree of sexual activity in the film But you are completely right re the mundanity - the chair moves so choreographed for example.

I have only seen Conclave and a Complete Unknown.

I loved Conclave. Just loved it. And I would have said that RF ought to win the best actor for his ability to portray such emotion in a mere eye twitch. But then I saw A Complete Unknown. I thought TC's performance was (when not singing) almost without nuance- just a one note of sullen truculence. But the fact he sang everything and played all the instruments I thought was simply incredible. What a talent for someone so young. I don't think the film was a great film- but TC's performance was a great performance.

Would you like to give marks out of 5 to each of these films?

I saw Anora earlier. Cinema was pretty busy, especially considering it was at 11.30am. My biggest shock was the trailers. I have Odeon Limitless and go every week but I don't usually watch 18s. I hate horror but all the trailers were for horror type films. I had to look away.

Anyway, it was a more thoughtful film than I was expecting from the trailer for it. But I would be surprised if it won the Oscar.

I've been so rubbish at watching all the films this year. How many can I squeeze in before Sunday?! Will see if I can stream any. I have three free evenings but need to be at home for two of them - might be able to squeeze in one cinema trip. Have promised I'll see Bridget Jones with a friend on Sunday. Maybe I can make it a double bill with one of the below...

I plan on staying up to watch the Oscars though, at least for a bit! Must admit I love watching the red carpet.

Anora - seen. Really liked.
The Brutalist - not seen. Not sure I have time!
A Complete Unknown - not seen.
Conclave - seen. Loved.
Dune: Part Two - not seen.
Emilia Pérez - not seen and won't watch. I know I'll hate it.
I'm Still Here - not seen.
Nickel Boys - not seen.
The Substance - seen. Loved.
Wicked - not seen and won't watch. Can't bear musicals.

SocksAndTheCity · 25/02/2025 13:02

I saw I'm Still Here last night and thought it was astonishingly good although I can see why not everybody would enjoy it; it's long and not much happens, on screen at least. A solid 5/5 (and if Fernanda Torres pulled off a surprise Best Actress Oscar I wouldn't be too upset about it).

I've just found that my local cinema are showing the Oscar nominated shorts this weekend - I can't get to the live action ones, but I'll be going to the animated ones on Sunday evening (then home to watch the Oscars 😀)

MrsSkylerWhite · 25/02/2025 13:06

Who is the transwoman nominated? (honestly don’t know).
I thought it was one of the two actors from Emilia Perez at the recent BAFTAs but I’d have sworn blind they were both biological women.

Agreed; I thought the scene at the house showing Ani's dance routine to be a bit awkward and incongruous when taken out of the club setting and placed in somebody's living room in broad daylight was bang on. The banality of it all was likewise - there was nothing even remotely titillating there.

And the scene where a fight had broken out in the club and all the women jumped out of their booths to have a look made me laugh out loud 😂

burnoutbabe · 25/02/2025 20:40

Having booked nickel Boys for Sunday at a central London cinema.

My local odeon is showing it Friday and Saturday!

Anyway, may help others!

westisbest1982 · 25/02/2025 20:51

Nickel Boys is coming to Prime in the next couple of weeks, by the way.

The trans woman has been cancelled, so hasn't been involved in Oscars campaigning. Their name is Karla Sofia Gascon.

I would like to make another plea for Better Man. I have seen almost all the other popular films this season and Better Man is the best. Please swallow your Guardian Reading prejudices and just go and see it! I was dragged there by a friend I definitely did not want to see a CGI monkey and I am no fan of Robbie Williams at all. But, it is a truly imaginative film. Far, far more creative and interesting then eg. A Complete Unknown, which apart from a skilled performance by Chalamet is just a big standard American pop star biopic. No different to any other.

I am a Guardian reading woman from London with no interest in Robbie Williams and I loved Better Man. Go and see it, apart from anything else it will show you that it’s always the same old same old types of protagonists and contexts which appear over and over in mainstream films.

westisbest1982 · 26/02/2025 08:12

I saw Anora last night. It was OK but I’m perplexed as to why it’s won so many awards over the past few months. I didn’t find the story captivating and I wasn’t rooting for the Mikey Madison character. I didn’t feel anything for her, actually. MM was better than I thought she would be and I expect she’ll win the Oscar this weekend.

I also recently saw I’m Still Here and whilst I wasn’t crazy about it, I did love the performance of one of MM’s competitors, Fernanda Torres.

Would you mind giving a star rating for each film out of 5 stars. It doesn't matter if you have seen all the films. It's great to have your mark for the films you have seen. I am assuming that the fact people have not felt driven to watch all the films means that they are actually voting with their feet.

I suppose it's good to watch these things when you normally wouldn't.

I mean I wasn't sure my 78 year old dad would like Anora or substance but he loved them both (as did I) and not our usual cup of tea at all.

I also enjoyed the bonkers of Emilia Perez. Now I haven't bothered yet watching 2023 all quiet on western front as I find war movies boring but I will get it done as soon as 2025 season is over.

Totally agree with this. Better Man gets a 4 from me. Ignore the hate, it's very worth your time

I'd see The Brutalist and A Complete Unknown of these - first so much better on a big screen, second great depiction of 60s USA and Timothy C is v impressive

Apologies for the long post.

I saw A Complete Unknown yesterday. It was a mixed bag, I thought. I didn't think the story telling was that clear. There is a fascinating story here of a really interesting young man who hits the folk scene with his amazing songwriting talent and then proceeds to lead a revolution that explodes the sacred rules of folk music. The film only makes this clear in its third act when they let the music speak for itself, which is when the film suddenly becomes fascinating.

I don't know much about Dylan and Baez, but I am struck by the fact that they were so young during this period and yet made work of superlative artistry and intelligence. They were both serious about their art and made music that supported the civil rights movement. It was hard to watch the film without comparing what they stood for to America today which is destroying the commitment to humanity that they achieved.

I saw the film with a young relative who is at the age that Baez and Dylan were in those days. She couldn't quite get a handle on their music because it is proper poetry and therefore so different to music today. After the film I listened to Baez song Diamonds and Rust about her love for Dylan and it is so moving. I had to listen over and over again.

The script doesn't really serve these incredible artists. I wish that the film had been about both Baez and Dylan instead of just Dylan because doing that would have strengthened the characterisation of both. The film just scratches the surface, I believe.

I am not entirely convinced by Chalamet's portrayal of Dylan. The script doesn't give him the opportunity to dig deeper. After the film I watched an interview with the real young Dylan. What a fascinating character: a bit nervous, on edge, oodles of an unusual charisma, but aware of the power of his gift and committed to using it, to stand up for the innovations that he was making in his field. Amazing young person.

I still give the film 4 stars because it opened something up for me. I am going to listen to and read about folk music of that era and find out more about Baez in particular.
