We’ll…that was bloody good!

I thought it was good - if slightly predictable - I 'guessed' the story arc about half way in so the ending was rather expected!

Bit long too - but will be interesting to see where they take the series now and whether 00 Nomi answers the question about a female lead character.

WhyAmIDoingIt · 01/10/2021 09:26

I enjoyed it, definitely better than spectre although Skyfall is still my favourite Bond film. I'll miss Craig playing Bond. My money is on Rege Jean page for the next Bond but who knows.

The emotional scenes I didn't particularly feel anything for and the end of the film on the island felt very cheesy 60's style bond films with added anonymous henchmen.

I felt that the major plotline was a bit thin.
I read a review online where it said all the characters know what's going on but the audience are left feeling we're missing a key bit of the plot and that's how I felt. With a Bond films you can just carry on enjoying the action but when you don't know the whys I always think you end up not really caring that much what happens.

I liked the Cuba part and ana de armes character, was a shame she was in it for so little time.

FillyerBoots · 01/10/2021 10:19

I have to say I loved the end scene and the nod to cheesy bond films of the past.

Saw it last night and felt strangely unmoved by it in the 2nd half.
Good stunts and action near the start. Liked seeing more of the admin staff back at the office. I Always enjoy Ralph Fiennes.
The main baddie didn't get enough air time in my humble opinion.

FMSucks · 01/10/2021 13:30

I have to preempt this post by saying that I am a massive Bond fan. Have loved the movies since childhood and Daniel is without question the best Bond to me. Just so you know I don’t look at Bond as “just another movie!”

Was at the midnight showing and took the day off yesterday. I had a sneaking suspicion it was going to end the way it did and I thought it would give Daniel the send off he truly deserved. Now that I’ve had 1.5 days to digest it I’m not so sure. I think I may have PTSD! My friend whom I went with is also a huge Bond fan and couldn’t believe what he was seeing. I think we’re both going to need therapy!

Because of the ending I can’t even muster up an opinion on the rest of the movie. I’m going again on Sunday so I can look at it through fresh eyes. I will say that I loved the score and the homages that were paid to all the other bond movies but at the moment I just can’t get passed the ending.

FillyerBoots · 01/10/2021 13:37

I think I'd figured out that it was going to end like that so I was OK with it.

It was Daniel Craig's Bond at his best though. And I liked the humour.

FMSucks · 01/10/2021 13:43

Yes I thought I would be okay with it and was waiting for it but now I’ve had time to digest, I’m just not so sure anymore.

Daniel was superb. He has brought so much to the franchise and made Bond “human.” Good luck to anyone who even tries to fill Daniel’s shoes!

Jellypot · 01/10/2021 16:19

I am not a die hard James Bond fan. The older movies were so boring and I was never able to follow them. It was Daniel Craig's Casino Royal movie that got me into watching the Bond movies. I heard a review from a presenter on the radio at the time of the movie release saying that she's not a fan of the James Bond movies but she was dragged to the cinema to watch it and she loved it. I went to the cinema with my two brothers and they were going into see James Bond Casino Royal and I was apprehensive about the movie and I was going to watch something else but one of my brothers made a deal with me and offered me 20 euro if I didn't like the movie. I went in and I loved the movie. Absolutely loved it. I loved all the action on the big screen.

I loved all of Daniel Craigs James bond movies. I'm looking forward to seeing this one. I didn't get a chance to see it yet but I will be going to the cinema tomorrow. Ticket and seat booked already.

CormoranStrike · 01/10/2021 19:08

I thought it was okay - a bit less action Bond and more narrative and loose ends, overlong and - to my mind - written entirely as a farewell to Daniel Craig.

I also thought there were a fair few plot holes.

Spoiler

And farewell to Bond himself; arguably 007 can ride again, but James Bond is dead.

comingintomyown · 01/10/2021 20:35

Just got back from watching it and definitely didn’t see the end coming and was a shell shocked 😳
More than 2 hours for any film for me is normally out of the question no matter how good but it flew by. I loved the mix of old style, new style and Daniel Craig style Bond.

astrowars · 01/10/2021 22:44

I enjoyed it, a bit long, but loved all the nods to previous films. For me it's done now. What's the point in another actor playing that part? The franchise may continue with another 007 but surely that's the end of bond.

ToykotoLosAngeles · 02/10/2021 10:36

It was fine. Reminded me more of the very 1990s, action-y, Goldeneye/Tomorrow Never Dies Brosnans more than Skyfall (still the best Craig film).

Didn't really remember much about Madeleine from 6 years ago unsurprisingly, and the 20 year age gap I found really jarring, so I wasn't particularly invested in her as a love interest.

I am still a bit at a loss as to what Malek's bad guy was trying to achieve with the weapon, other than him being a bit pissed off at the world!

I thought Nomi was terribly handled. Not only was she permanently annoyed for no reason, she had 2 missions. One offscreen, and one where she rocked up 10 minutes after Bond killed her target. I always hoped they'd make better use of Moneypenny rather than whatever this arc was supposed to be.

CormoranStrike · 02/10/2021 14:22

I cannot understand why Malek/Blofelt created that massive big weapon and lured Bond to party to kill him. Surely there were much easier ways?

escapeyou · 02/10/2021 17:59

I'm in the car after leaving the cinema. I am not sure how I feel about the ending or where they will take the franchise and James Bond name now.

It was a long film. Some amazing stunts and a few laughs.

I love Daniel Craig. It won't be the same without him.

MatildaJayne · 02/10/2021 18:54

I’m entirely not sure I liked it. Too big an age gap. Silly plot and a bit stunned at the ending. Where will they go now? Another reboot like Spider-Man?

Some of the scenery was lovely, though. Italy, Cuba and Norway. And always good to have an evil private island.

It has to be a complete re-boot I think. So a complete new cast.
ToykotoLosAngeles · 02/10/2021 19:09

I suspect they may carry over Fiennes like with Judi Dench.

I know Seydoux is 36 so the age gap is actually "only" 17 years, but she looks about 25 and Craig looked about 55 in this.

hanahsaunt · 02/10/2021 21:55

I saw the ending coming but kept thinking no, no, no, no, no. Then I cried. The time flew by and I absolutely loved it.

CormoranStrike · 02/10/2021 21:57

I cried too

KillingMeDeftly · 02/10/2021 23:15

I stayed to the end of the credits as I was convinced Bond would make a mid-credits appearance! But alas it was not to be, although a line appeared on the screen right at the end to say he would be returning.

I thought it was easily one of the best, although maybe Skyfall has the edge due to Javier Bardem's Silva. I never really felt Rami Malek's villain. I wasn't even sure exactly what he was up to, or why. He wanted to kill half of humanity just to get revenge on Madeleine?

Still love Q - his reinvention as a tech geek/whiz was inspired and Ben Whishaw is great in the part. Nice little nod towards him having a romantic life too - the mysterious "he" who was expected for dinner.

Jellypot · 02/10/2021 23:58

I had a seat hooked today to see the movie. I had a terrible nightmare last night that I was not able to make it. Too many people pulling on my time in my dream which really quite often sums up real life all too often. I worked hard all week and I was supposed to be finished for 7 yesterday evening but it was more like 10. I found that very hard because I did find this morning was very stressfull. I made it in the end.
I was delighted to see the movie.

I love Daniel Craig as Bond. He is a mean looking character. I enjoyed the movie. It was different and I wasn't expecting the story to play out the way it did. I am horrified at the ending.

I don't know who they will be able to get the next James Bond. Will they carry Naomi over to the next movie to be the next 007 agent? She was a great addition to the movie. I can't get my head around a female bond though. This isn't me being sexiest. I am female myself. It has nothing to do with sex or race. James Bond has always been male.

MrsTWH · 03/10/2021 00:08

I thought it was weak, predictable and sexist - just like the old Bonds! I loved that the new 007 was a black woman, but then she just rolled over and said he could have the number back again and she wasn’t given a new one. The age gap between Daniel Craig and the love interest was huge. The villain was so 2D it was laughable and didn’t explain his motivation or back story. Got to love an evil villain’s private island lair complete with anonymous henchmen. Thought it got a touch Austin Powers for my liking!

KillingMeDeftly · 03/10/2021 06:52

It wasn't as Austin Powers as Spectre, which basically stole the plot of Goldmember!

KillingMeDeftly · 03/10/2021 06:53

I don't know if I want to see Nomi as the next Bond but I'd like to see a film featuring her and Paloma teaming up.

brokenbiscuitsx · 03/10/2021 07:35

I saw it the first night it came out was so excited but… I didn’t like it. DP was also disappointed. In all the Daniel Craig films I’d put it after Casino Royale, Skyfall and Spectre and before Quantum of Solace.

I thought the intro dragged and there were good bits but it could honestly have done without the whole live story/family/him being a father bit. I was bored at the end, there was a point where I didn’t care if Bond died or not I was just ‘meh’
