We’ll…that was bloody good!

I just loved it and I'm not a big Bond fan. It's the first Bond film ever I think that I've wanted to see again and I cried at the unexpected (for me) ending.

It was just such a gorgeous spectacle - I wasn't surprised that they need it to make $900M just to break even!

I loved Madeleine's chic capsule wardrobe for the whole film - it seemed to be just two cardigan dresses, a pair of cropped white flared jeans with either a white vest or a black jersey t-shirt!

I also loved Ana de Armas - she was like a beautiful kick-ass Marilyn Monroe - I wish she'd had a bigger part.

Laughingravy · 04/10/2021 00:50

Well that was a bum numbing test of bladder capacity. Holes in the plot Pierce Brosnan could have driven his tank through and every mad villain gets to explain his master plan - except this one. Bond could have at least dropped him into his tank of gawd knows what by opening the blast doors. My DPs 13yo son loved every minute - except the snogging - but couldn't recall any of the plot. Quite.

Her next big role is playing Marilyn!

escapeyou · 04/10/2021 07:11

I agree the clothes were fantastic. Particularly Mr Bond in his black jumper which, when he took it off he wore a white long sleeve top with braces. Gorgeous!

rookiemere · 04/10/2021 07:59

People are right about the underwritten baddie. Rami Malek is an amazing actor and born to play a Bond baddie, but spent most of his airtime awkwardly balancing a toddler in his arms.

IdblowJonSnow · 04/10/2021 08:14

I loved it. The dialogue was so much better than usual (thanks PWB) and Craig's acting was the best it's ever been. It was markedly less sexist than usual. I enjoyed the female characters- presumably this film will pave the way for even more of that next time.

The ending broke my heart! Loved it. The scenery was beautiful and the action sequences were really enjoyable.

My favourite Bond to date.

Gingernaut · 04/10/2021 11:12

In previous films, Ana de Armas' character would have been killed off and Bond would have ridden off onto the next chapter.

She was left alive which makes a change....

BrilloPaddy · 04/10/2021 13:23

We went to see it last night.

I came away feeling a bit....... underwhelmed? Parts were majestic, but I didn't like the whole Madeline/child part. Bond is supposed to be mysterious, enigmatic and it felt.... too much, somehow. The villain was weak and not on screen enough.. and I lost interest in Vesper with Casino Royale. The recurring themes have been overplayed, IMO. As for the new 007, meh..... she irritated the hell out of me.

It's certainly time for a new Bond - I've adored Daniel Craig but they couldn't run another story out of the Spectre thing. I think that as he and Madeline slept together at her house in Norway, there will be another child........... a junior James Bond. And the story will begin again. Or he will have survived the island blast, and be unrecognisable from extensive surgery!

Ild looked that up- very excited as I first read it as £34.50!
NotPennysBoat · 05/10/2021 12:18

What happened to the cigar given to Bond for Felix? It seemed important at the time, and Bond tried to give it to Felix as he died, but Felix told him to keep it as he might need it later.... Did it ever reappear? Is that going to be a Q special which saves his life for the next movie?? And to return the cuddly rabbit to his daughter?

mizu · 05/10/2021 19:14

Yes, I thought the cigar would have some relevance too.

KillingMeDeftly · 05/10/2021 19:42

Maybe it did in the original script but went the way of the mosquito bites!

NewspaperTaxis · 05/10/2021 20:01

In my view this isn't a film to risk getting Covid for, if that's a factor. Mind you, If you're on this thread you shouldn't be because it explains the main big spoiler. Not much audience reaction at at the afternoon showing at the BFI Imax in Waterloo. Not many laughs or anything.

It's at times a grim, impressive movie - some of the opening scenes had a magnificence and foreboding. But all this spectacle is at odds with the traditional stupidity of the modern Bonds, the plot holes and Craig's Bond making stupid decisions.

To me, it's similar to Brosnan's Die Another Day or Craig's Quantum of Solace - the director simply doesn't have funny bones, no lightness of touch to help you go with the implausibilities.

And the writers had boxed themselves into a corner with the whole Craig story arc and him still harking back to a woman he met maybe for a week or a fortnight over 10 years ago. When they make the point that his Bond is a damaged, unhappy bloke, they're not wrong.

I could have walked out not far from the end because I didn't want to risk getting Covid for a film I didn't enjoy but stayed because I wanted to see how it was going (I had my suspicions) and certainly didn't want to fork out for it again.

Smashedavacado · 05/10/2021 20:09

Just saw it with a group of adults with learning disabilities. One young lady was in floods of tears at the end because Bond had died and Mathilda had lost her father. She was reassured by my suggestion be was probably on a beach somewhere sipping cocktails. On the plus side the whole group was captivated and not overly traumatized by the noise - I had accidentally booked front row seats thinking they were at the back!

MrsFin · 05/10/2021 22:06

And farewell to Bond himself; arguably 007 can ride again, but James Bond is dead

Is he though? Hmm🤔

Mumsnut · 06/10/2021 10:53

As an aside, from talking to friends and neighbours, there seems to be an age split where this film is concerned: younger people love it, especially the ending; the Roger Moore / Sean Connery generation feel short-changed.

rookiemere · 06/10/2021 10:57

Interesting @Mumsnut as I feel they pushed the female 007/Bond angle so hard with the new 007, his DC being a DD , that it would be difficult now to move forward with a new male Bond, but conversely that may put off their core audience.
If however their audience is younger they may be more open to mixing up the basic formula.

Interestingly, me and Dh who are younger didn’t like it but my mother who is of older loved it. My brother who’s younger loved it too.
ToykotoLosAngeles · 06/10/2021 16:34

They will absolutely 100% start again with a male Bond. There's no "carrying on" in Bond though! The Brosnan films had absolutely no continuity with the Craig films except for the casting of Judi Dench. They don't need to say he died, mention the daughter, etc. They'll just cast a 30-something and, I dunno, make Blofeld a woman or something.

What about me the Pierce Brosnan age 🤣 (I was disappointed)
BrilloPaddy · 06/10/2021 20:49

I can see why they lost Danny Boyle early on with this one.

It is a great blank canvas for an up and coming actor. I just hope that the producers leave the past where it should be, and start a new book instead of yet another chapter.........

Tealc78 · 07/10/2021 00:18

I'm willing to bet the mosquito chat in the car was overheard by Bond and that somehow convinced him that Mathilde really is his daughter, why else would they have Mathilde say that Mosquitos seems to like her. I don't have the proof, but I am pretty certain this is the moment Bond is convinced she is his daughter.
There is a book called Blood Fever from 2006 where young bond is bitten by mosquitos, this is the only reference I have found for now. Maybe the next Bond movies will be about Young Bond, which makes the chat have double meaning.

Rhannion · 07/10/2021 01:12

We are just back from watching, I said to my Dh and Ds half way in my gut feeling is that this will be the last Bond. It’s gone out on a sad, but fitting high. The stunts were superb, script not so good, but 25 films over 50 years is a bloody good run. It must cost an absolute fortune, and difficult to keep the stories fresh. I don’t know how that production could be topped.

BasiliskStare · 07/10/2021 02:01

I am pretty sure there will be another Bond - I liked it in that there were some such fabulous shots with brilliant scenery - & I do like DC as Bond - but he's gone - I just thought it was too long. What were the editors doing ? I hope we get more because they are a laugh ( but agree - not enough one liners so where was PWB ? )

I am glad they got back to proper stunts rather than CGI
