This evening I watched Summer Holiday on starring Cliff Richard on BBC iplayer. It's been one of my favourite films since I was a child because my grandparents had the video and I just always loved it. Probably wouldn't be a popular choice for many people in their 30s but then I've always been an old soul with films and music.

So what unlikely films do you enjoy that nobody else does?

I thought the Odd Couple was loved?!

Add that to my list too - I love Jack Lemon

MsTSwift · 11/07/2021 23:57

We really liked the new Annie. The Guardian gave it a very snooty review but our kids late primary girls at the time loved it and we really quite enjoyed it too especially Cameron Diaz.

Also liked La La Land and Greatest Showman I became mildly obsessed with both when they came out and listened to the soundtracks rather too much.

Maybe it's not so much that nobody else loves these films but nobody else knows them? I get the impression a lot of people never watch old films on principle, which is a shame, as there are many gems from the past.

One I adore and never pass up the chance to watch if it turns up on TV is Where Eagles Dare. Absolute hokum from start to finish, but so well done. Richard Burton and Clint Eastwood and a full supporting cast of British character actors. 'This is Broadsword .... Broadsword calling Danny Boy .... come in, Danny Boy ... Do you read me? Over.'. Often trotted out here, I'm afraid, when one household member is trying to track down another.

@GaspOdeTheW0nderD0g Broadsword calling Danny Boy (delivered in Richard Burton voice) has often been used in this house too for the same reason. Great film!

Eraserhead- lady in the radiator....😳😳
Dead of Night (1945) truly scary but nobody else seems impressed
The Holiday 😄 universally hated but I love it
Tower Block- love it
@WithLoveFromMyselfToYourself I love Brigadoon & all other old musicals to be fair as a Scot I find old Hollywood's take on Scotland hilarious.

My absolute favourite movie is I Married a Witch - old black & white movie I came across on BBC2 one Sunday afternoon as a teen no one I know has ever heard of it & I can't convince anyone to watch it. I have the movie poster in my Amazon basket ready to buy when I decorate my hall Grin
I love I Married a Witch. Never met anyone else who had seen it!

Saturday afternoon films were the best. They don't do it as much nowadays.

My contribution to the thread: Vivacious Lady and Batchelor Mother. Both Ginger Rogers films.

I love The Holiday too don’t understand all the hate it gets on here 😅

FrownedUpon · 12/07/2021 21:59

Hostel & Hostel: Part II
Another fan of Lost in Translation

My DH is like this, especially if the film is black and white.
Most of my favourite films are black and white.
Luckily younger DD doesn't share his silliness. We watched Kind Hearts and Coronets followed by Passport to Pimlico over the weekend.

Small bit of side trivia, Margaret Rutherford was Professor Hatton Jones in P to P.
She was Tony Benn's first cousin and her father murdered her grandfather and died in Broadmoor. I was googling as I didn't know anything much about her.

FixItUpChappie · 13/07/2021 07:12

I loved that movie The Village by M. Night Shyamalan - people trashed banged on and on about how he was a one trick pony with his "twists" blah blah but I thought it was very good

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 13/07/2021 07:38

@MartyHart, Kind Hearts and Coronets is one of my all-time favourites! Alec Guinness playing 8+ members of the same family is marvellous.

Anybody else who likes old films, there are lots on LondonLive. Not sure if you can get that outside the London area. Film4 shows some too, in the afternoons. Quite a few on BBC iplayer.

Sommersby. Everyone is derisive when I say I love it, but I don’t care. Richard Gere in a billowy white shirt and britches, Jodie Foster at her angsty best. Love it.

LunaNorth · 13/07/2021 08:10

@FixItUpChappie - I liked The Village, too.

MartyHart · 13/07/2021 08:56

@LunaNorth I like Sommersby too. Isn't it based on the book Martin Guerre which was based on a real life case in France?

It's fab!

SummerHouse · 13/07/2021 09:06

Magnolia. Lots of people actually walked out the cinema. Can you imagine!? I was totally mesmerised by it. Incredible film.

I think so, yes. Glad to see I’m not the only one with excellent taste.

People walked out??! Extraordinary. I adore that film - definitely in my all time top 10.
SummerHouse · 13/07/2021 15:49

Badhat I worked in a cinema at the time and it was the most people I saw walk out, ever. Like you, it's a very clear top ten, possibly number one for me. I am going to watch it again!

gonow · 13/07/2021 16:20

Magnolia is a wonderful film. Brilliant soundtrack too
My favourite film is a Kevin Spacey one called K pax

MartyHart · 13/07/2021 16:59

@LunaNorth there's a really good radio play of Martin Guerre on BBC Sounds with Sean Bean as Martin.

Seahawk80 · 13/07/2021 17:01

@youvemademyshitlist just saw your reply. I think he said he was nice, they were a real life team of Morris dancers and then a guy who joined them from another team got the bigger part as he ran off with the robbers and got to hang out with Frankie Howard - I remember him being annoyed about that! He's not here anymore so I can't ask him but I will ask one of his friends when I see them!

FakeColinCaterpillar · 13/07/2021 18:00

@NatashaAlianovaRomanova

I love that movie! Waaaalllllyyyyyy….

gonow · 13/07/2021 19:08

chocolateoranges33 · 13/07/2021 19:23

Grease 2. I really don't like Grease and don't understand the hype! Grease 2 is SO much better
