This evening I watched Summer Holiday on starring Cliff Richard on BBC iplayer. It's been one of my favourite films since I was a child because my grandparents had the video and I just always loved it. Probably wouldn't be a popular choice for many people in their 30s but then I've always been an old soul with films and music.

So what unlikely films do you enjoy that nobody else does?

@MummyInTheNecropolis

Love Actually - always slated on here and in real life but I love it and watch it every Christmas
Me too!

There's an old 50s film I like called The Night of the Hunter. Don't know if anyone else has seen it? It's a bit of a strange one but Robert Mitchum is brilliant as a pycho preacher with his iconic hate/love tattoos on his knuckles. I think it was directed by Charles Laughton.
Terrifying film! Well worth anybody's time.
UnalliterativeGeorge · 04/07/2021 19:49

Dodgeball. I can't not watch it if it's on.

Seahawk80 · 04/07/2021 19:59

I love so many of these films! Romy and Michelle is one of my all time faves. Also Grease 2, La La land, Love actually and Four Weddings. I also really love Blue Juice which is a random film set In Cornwall with Catherine Zeta Jones, Sean Pertwee and Ewan McGregor.
@youvemademyshitlist my dad was one of the Morris dancers in the original Great St Trinians Train Robbery, always makes me smile when someone mentions it!

@GolfEchoRomeoTangoIndia

Yes the hangover scene in High Society is amazing I love literally all of it apart from Tracy’s appalling father blaming his behaviour on her.
Yep, he's a dick.
ABitOfAShitShow · 04/07/2021 20:17

The Wedding Date! Best rom-com ever.

I think it had a 90s remake as Cape Fear with Robert de Niro as the psycho out for revenge
mag2305 · 04/07/2021 22:11

@SydneyCarton Robert Mitchum was in the original 60s Cape Fear which then got remade with Robert De Niro in the 90s as you said. Both good films. Although I think Robert Mitchum played those sort of psychopath characters really well.

I have a soft spot for The Wedding Date with starring Debra Messing, Dermot Mulroney, and Amy Adams and the bloke from This Life and a soundtrack by Michael Buble. Pure comfort viewing.

CosyAcorn · 04/07/2021 22:18

Love this thread, my ones are

Summer Holiday - now that I've read this thread I think I will be watching it on iplayer too

Down with Love - Renee Zellweger and Ewan McGregor in a very over the top sixties battle of the sexes

Hatari - John Wayne film set in Africa. Just love the chemistry between the whole cast plus very cute baby elephants

Troy - because of all the men with long hair in teeny tiny skirts

ChloeDecker · 04/07/2021 22:19

Major x post there! Happy to hear at least someone else likes it Grin

Odisia · 04/07/2021 22:28

Branleuse. I think maybe you're alone with loving Cats. I thought it was awful. I nearly left the cinema. There was absolutely nothing I liked about it!

Thats the premis of the thread tbf
Odisia · 04/07/2021 22:43

Branleuse yes, of course, you're right. It was just that many of the films mentioned others have said they liked. Maybe not yours! I really wanted to like it and I was so disappointed that I didn't.

JustDanceAddict · 05/07/2021 07:44

I had to look up that Matt Damon film where he shrinks as I knew I’d seen it (maybe on a flight!) - it’s Downsizing.

Also loved Four Weddings and was brought up on Carry Ons - oooh matron..,

That's amazing! GrinShockDid your dad tell you what Frankie Howerd was like?
MartyHart · 05/07/2021 15:27

As a result of this thread my Jumpin Jack Flash dvd has arrived, goody! Grin
I know what I will be doing tonight.

Needhelp101 · 06/07/2021 14:44

Thanks for this thread! Lots of forgotten films going on the watch list.

Con Air is a masterpiece Smile

For me, it's an Aussie film starring Heath Ledger called Two Hands. It's amazing, but almost nobody has seen it.

Needhelp101 · 06/07/2021 14:45

TBF, everyone I've ever shown it to has loved it so possibly not in the spirit of the thread!

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 06/07/2021 14:52

@mag2305

I like Grease 2 better than Grease 1 which isn't a popular opinion. But I think some of the songs are better (not all), like Cool Rider. The Back to School intro song is good. I also prefer the role reversal where the geeky man works hards to impress the lady. Smile
SO MUCH THIS!!!

The Odd Couple (original one with Walter Matthau and Jack Lemmon)

Letter to Brezhnev

Dragonglass · 11/07/2021 19:16

I love Rock of Ages. A great soundtrack, funny and cheesy, the perfect combination.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 11/07/2021 19:40

Oh yes, The Odd Couple is marvellous. The scene where Jack Lemmon starts trying to unblock his sinuses while they sit in the diner and Walter Matthau is clearly about to explode with annoyance - just brilliant.

bendmeoverbackwards · 11/07/2021 23:44

@Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g so many great lines ‘the only man in the world with clenched hair’ 😂

Livpool · 11/07/2021 23:54

Romy and Michelle's High School Reunion
