This evening I watched Summer Holiday on starring Cliff Richard on BBC iplayer. It's been one of my favourite films since I was a child because my grandparents had the video and I just always loved it. Probably wouldn't be a popular choice for many people in their 30s but then I've always been an old soul with films and music.

So what unlikely films do you enjoy that nobody else does?

I'm another who loves Grease 2, must tell DH there are more like me! In a similar vein I also like Crybaby.

My favourite comedy podcast: Rule of Three, has an episode on how underrated Romy and Michele is.
I’ve still never seen it.

First Knight
The other Boleyn girl
Mean Girls
She's the Man
Casino Royale (my favourite Bond film ever)
A Royal Affair (Mads Mikkelsen, just a fantastic film)

And one film that I absolutely adore is Flashbacks of a Fool with Daniel Craig........ such a clever and well filmed story, I'm really saddended that it wasn't more popular.

White chicks. My friend even made me a costume for my hen party. It was the swan outfit. I loved it so much 😂

TulipWoodpecker · 03/07/2021 14:08

There was a movie about people who shrink themselves to live a better life in a luxurious, 'tiny' community. Matt Damon was in it. I was on a long haul flight and watched it twice as I was so intrigued.
I suspect it was a huge flop but I really liked it.

mag2305 · 03/07/2021 14:09

@MartyHart me too!!! Smile A carry on film will always cheer me up. Especially the Kyber dinner scene. Love it!

I also love Romy and Michelle ❤️

Carry On films are great! Have any CO fans watched SanFerry Ann

Silent film of Brits crossing to France on the ferry, hilarious!

I love Vamp - very, very silly Grace Jones vampire film.
I love Death Becomes Her and it still makes me laugh. I love everyone in it, it was the first comedy I'd seen Meryl Street in and she is great. Dodgy special effects by today's standards, but I don't mind.

The Poseidon Adventure (original), A Night to Remember (first Titanic movie, better love stories), Thoroughly Modern Millie, Calamity Jane (as others have mentioned), California man (Brendan Fraser as a defrosted Caveman!), Top Secret (Val Kilmer in Elvis mode ).

Lots of quirky old films

Icantrememberthenameoftheartis · 03/07/2021 14:13

The Good Girl with Jennifer Anniston.

Eyes wide shut with Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman

mag2305 · 03/07/2021 14:19

Enjoying all the mutual love for Grease 2, haha!

I also like a Simon Pegg film and went to see Absolutely Anything at the cinema. I believe it was a bit of a flop at the time but I really liked it. Funny and quirky. Seen it a few times since on TV.

@elQuintoConyo I haven't seen San Ferry Ann. I'll look out for it.

I watched the Poseidon Adventure recently. I couldn't help but find some of it quite amusing. That's why I love Airplane for sending up all those 70s disaster movies Smile

Legally blonde. Totally not my usual type of movie but I love it.

Turtles4543 · 03/07/2021 14:37

Love con air

@mag2305

I like Grease 2 better than Grease 1 which isn't a popular opinion. But I think some of the songs are better (not all), like Cool Rider. The Back to School intro song is good. I also prefer the role reversal where the geeky man works hards to impress the lady. Smile
Grease 2 is so much better, I love it Grin it's baffling that Grease is held in such high regard, and Grease 2 was a flop.

Dredd is brilliant, as another poster said. I wish I had seen it in 3D. The soundtrack is excellent too.

I love Stardust, it's one of the films I put on if I need a pick me up. The same goes for The Wedding Singer.

MadisonMontgomery · 03/07/2021 14:45

Major Movie Star. It was from about 2008 I think, with Jessica Simpson, playing an actress who gets drunk & accidentally joins the army. Nobody else has ever heard of it, I have the dvd and I love it.

Sadik · 03/07/2021 15:04

Absolute Beginners - totally critically slated, but I think it's fabulous, and genuinely captures the spirit of the book. Might help that I was 16 when it came out, I think the critics couldn't deal with the 80s pop video aesthetic for a book about their teenage years.

youvemademyshitlist · 03/07/2021 15:11

I also love Romy and Michelle.

I love Hackers - a young Angelina Jolie and Jonny Lee Miller. It's so dated, as all films that focus on computers tend to, and it's a bit shit really (dh who works in IT security, is especially scathing of it) but I love it, it reminds me of being 15 and seeing it at the cinema.

I also love the St Trinians films - not those crap new ones, but the proper old ones - The Belles of St Trinians, Blue Murder at St Trinians, The Great St Trinians Train Robbery.... they're perfect Sunday afternoon viewing but I've never met anyone else who likes them. Joyce Grenfell as Sergeant Gates cracks me up every time.

FunnyWonder · 03/07/2021 15:17

Mine are all comedies, just not everybody's idea of comedy it would appear!

  • Drop Dead Fred (with Rik Mayall, who couldn't do any wrong in my eyes)
  • So I Married an Axe Murderer
  • Booty Call
KilljoysDutch · 03/07/2021 15:19

Any terrible horror movie where the "bad guy" is a shark or crocodile Blush Deep Blue Sea, Lake Placid, Black Water, Sharknado you get the idea Grin

Also Dredd is a masterpiece Lena Heady as Ma-Ma is a feminist icon. I can think of a few men I'd love to throw off a very high balcony too.

MartyHart · 03/07/2021 15:19

@randomkey123 yes yes I love Flashbacks of a Fool!
Calamity Jane fabulous, Romy and Michelle also genius.

Anyone else love Blast from the Past? Brendan Fraser has lived all his life in a fallout shelter because his mad dad thought the Russians had dropped the bomb but they hadn't. It's soooooo funny.

Drop Dead Fred was my favourite film as a kid Grin rewatching it as an adult was fun and made me realise how inappropriate it was.

California Man is the American name for Blast from the Past and it's on Disney+ I think! Excellent movie.

IHaveBrilloHair · 03/07/2021 15:21

Both kissing Booth films
Mickey Blue Eyes

Pokkadots · 03/07/2021 15:25

Grease 2

mag2305 · 03/07/2021 15:36

I love seeing everyone's thoughts on this and I've now got some films on my to see list, like Dredd.

Just thought of another film that might not be an unpopular one but is totally underrated and that's The Emperor's New Groove. It's probably my most favourite Disney film as an adult.
