This evening I watched Summer Holiday on starring Cliff Richard on BBC iplayer. It's been one of my favourite films since I was a child because my grandparents had the video and I just always loved it. Probably wouldn't be a popular choice for many people in their 30s but then I've always been an old soul with films and music.

So what unlikely films do you enjoy that nobody else does?

I love Grease 2, I remember singing the soundtrack in my head when sitting my GCSE exams Grin
Also Calamity Jane has been a favourite of mine since I was very small. I don't know anyone else who knows it never mind loves it!

Justjoinedforthis · 03/07/2021 09:36

Pootie Tang, me and my friends used to watch it every christmas.

@JasmineTeacup

Four Weddings and a Funeral appears to be loathed on MN, but it's one of my favourites. I don't even mind Andie MacDowell.
I think it’s decent film with some excellent performances and good ‘set piece’ scenes like the various sprints to weddings, Charles confronted by all his past girlfriends, Bernard and Lydia having sex, Carrie recounting all her sexual encounters, the funeral, the closing credits etc. And there’s a lot of sociological fun to be had with the different weddings, dresses, first dances etc.

Certainly it looks like Citizen Kane compared to later Richard Curtis offerings. Grin

Lost in Translation gets a lot of grief on here, but I like it, despite acknowledging the crude ethnic stereotypes that seem as if they strayed in from a different film. Bill Murray is brilliant, funny and intelligent and wry, Scarlett Johansen does a decent job as an adrift navel-gazer, it looks beautiful, and I love the atmosphere of dreamy dislocatedness, and the way it captures an intense location-specific friendship between strangers.

13 Going On 30. It is so awful its actually good. Its one I go to when I'm feeling really down and need cheering up.

TerrifiedandWorried · 03/07/2021 10:34

Came back to say Bring it On but can see I'm not the only fan!

ArtfulScreamer · 03/07/2021 10:50

I love the carry on films, I know they are all sorts of wrong by todays standards but they remind me of my childhood weekends when Dad (now deceased) would have them on the TV (in his defence there was only 4 channels to chose from).

mag2305 · 03/07/2021 11:44

@ArtfulScreamer I was going to say carry on films too. I was brought up on them, haha! GrinCarry on up the Kyper is a classic and always will be I think. I'm not sure how wrong they would be today in the grand scheme of things. ITV still show them so can't be that bad. Their portrayal of women isn't great but most films of that time are the same, like James Bond films. It's very much naughty, seaside humour which I quite like.

Carry on fact - one of the most unpopular carry on films at the time was Carry on at your Convenience and that's because it poked fun at the unions. But I really like that film. W. C. Boggs and son lol!!

@mag2305

I like Grease 2 better than Grease 1 which isn't a popular opinion. But I think some of the songs are better (not all), like Cool Rider. The Back to School intro song is good. I also prefer the role reversal where the geeky man works hards to impress the lady. Smile
Me too. Michelle Pfeffier is a total icon in that film.

🙋🏼‍♀️ Me! Calamity Jane is another favourite of mine. I clearly identify with the non-girly girl strong female lead, who can bang out a tune!!
PineappleCakes · 03/07/2021 12:04

@MareMare Lost In Translation is one of my favourite films. "Dreamy dislocatedness" - nice!

Haudyourwheesht · 03/07/2021 12:08

I liked 13 going on 30 a lot and I also love Mona Lisa Smile. Blush

Cocolapew · 03/07/2021 12:08

The Imitation of Life with Lana Turner.
Officially the saddest film in the world.

SirSamuelVimes · 03/07/2021 12:11

I bloody loved Brigadoon as a kid. Not seen it in years, sort of afraid to in case it ruins the memories!

And yeah, Romy & Michelle is an awesome film!

High Society is one of my favourite films of all time. Grace Kelly (her final film) Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, Louis Armstrong. Brilliant. I know lots of other people must like it too, I just haven't met them!

Geamhradh · 03/07/2021 12:12

First Knight with Sean Connery playing Sean Connery playing Arthur and Richard Gere at his most gorgeous. Every time it's on I make dp watch it.

Deep Impact. Love a disaster movie and this, despite being the cheapo version of Armageddon is way better.

I don't mind Love Actually (despite having an irrational hatred for "awright me cock sparrer" Martine Mc.

Ajl46 · 03/07/2021 12:12

Trance starring James McAvoy. Directed by Danny Boyle. Best film ever made.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 03/07/2021 12:21

I like High Society too, but I like The Philadelphia Story even more. Non-musical version, earlier, stars Katharine Hepburn, Cary Grant and James Stewart.

In this house the film I love and everybody else hates is The Towering Inferno.

Soubriquet · 03/07/2021 12:40

Sucker punch

Most people think it’s shit but it’s one of my favourite films

MartyHart · 03/07/2021 12:51

@mag2305 Carry On films are genius.
I love Khyber, Cleo (Infamy Infamy, they've all got it in for me), Jungle, Constable (Ding Dong), Camping and Convenience is the high point of the genre.
I love it when Mr Bogs says "I've finally realised what I've been missing all these years. A right good 'booze up'"
They usually used the sets and costumes left from big budget movies. Carry On Cleo used the ones from Anthony and Cleopatra (Taylor and Burton)

MartyHart · 03/07/2021 12:52

They're very silly and wouldn't get made today but I love them.

CocoandCleo · 03/07/2021 13:43

@CheerfulBunny

Romy and Michelle's High School Reunion - no one else gets it. Banging soundtrack.
This is one of my absolute faves!
ParadiseLaundry · 03/07/2021 13:50

Romy and Michele is great! Oooh, wonder if it's on Netflix or Prime 🤔

Also loved LaLa Land. The soundtrack was great!

I LOVE Showgirls. I can never tell anyone IRL though!

CocoandCleo · 03/07/2021 13:51

One of my absolute fave films in the world is Hook, which is universally thought of as one of Spielberg's worst!

I'm also partial to the Mary Kate and Ashley film passport to Paris which is so awful it's funny.

WithLoveFromMyselfToYourself · 03/07/2021 13:51

Tinkerbellatrix

Calamity Jane is wonderful!

BillyShears · 03/07/2021 13:52

I’ve found my people!

Love Summer Holiday and Romy and Michelle.

Mine are:

  • Match Point (Woody Allen, 2005, universally loathed)
  • The Object of My Affection (circa 1998, a Jennifer Anniston vehicle that Paul Rudd would probably rather forget)
  • Orange County (2002ish, young Colin Hanks and Jack Black)
  • Yesterday (that “if the Beatles hadn’t happened” thing that’s utter trash but just great)
  • Wilde (Stephen Fry as Oscar Wilde, about 1997, seems to have been forgotten by the world)
  • Fools Rush in (Matthew Perry about 1999, fabulous trash)
  • Due Date (Robert Downy Jnr and the lad from The Hangover. Just silliness- about 2009)

There must be more, I’ll have a think!

PuppyMonkey · 03/07/2021 13:55

My all-time favourite film is Armageddon. Blush
