This evening I watched Summer Holiday on starring Cliff Richard on BBC iplayer. It's been one of my favourite films since I was a child because my grandparents had the video and I just always loved it. Probably wouldn't be a popular choice for many people in their 30s but then I've always been an old soul with films and music.

So what unlikely films do you enjoy that nobody else does?

Captain Corelli's Mandolin- everyone who has read the book says how dreadfully miscast Nicholas Cage is and how it's an utter travesty of the story, but I never got past page 17 despite trying many times - so I absolutely love the film and cry buckets at the awful bits at the end.

lazylinguist · 03/07/2021 20:11

Deuce Bigalow Male Gigolo Blush. It's not very pc, but it's absolutely hilarious!

ElaineMarieBenes · 03/07/2021 20:12

@TulipWoodpecker - ‘Downsizing’ - I thought it was intriguing too (if slightly flawed) and will definitely watch it again!

I also love ‘The Tourist’ - though it got slated at the time!

EBearhug · 03/07/2021 20:15

I now have an earworm of Cool Rider.

I loved Absolute Beginners. I played the tape almost till it wore out.

mayjuneapril · 03/07/2021 21:25

Another one for she’s the man!

‘And when my eyes are closed I see you for what you truly are... which is UGLY’ 😂

WhistlersandJugglers · 03/07/2021 21:38

I absolutely love Armageddon. My kids refuse to watch it with me because oldest DS said that NASA would obviously teach astronauts to drill instead of the other way round.
I also told them that Con Air is one of the best action movies of all time. They watched that and very much enjoyed mocking it and me.

Girlstuff · 03/07/2021 21:45

Buddy’s song
It’s a 90’s film and such a turkey-it’s just awful
But watching it takes me back to being a teenager and my mad crush on Cheney hawkes
I watch it on YouTube at least once a year when I’m home alone

Abracadabra12345 · 03/07/2021 21:47

When I told my DH that my favourite film ever was The Sound of Music, he nearly walked away because we were clearly mismatched (we weren’t married at the time). So for him it’s a crap film he loathes.

Critics tore Last Christmas apart and a lot of people didn’t see it on that basis but I loved it

mewkins · 03/07/2021 21:49

I love lost in translation! The soundtrack is ace.

Suzi888 · 03/07/2021 22:00

@MummyInTheNecropolis

Love Actually - always slated on here and in real life but I love it and watch it every Christmas
Blushme too
CheerfulBunny · 03/07/2021 23:15

@SirSamuelVimes High Society might be my favourite film. Grace Kelly is so beautiful. Well, either that, or Working Girl if I'm totally honest Blush

Daisy829 · 03/07/2021 23:21

Agree with Grease 2 also Mama Mia 2. The casting of Cher is pure genius. I also love Andy Gracia. A very cheesy music but I absolutely love it.

@SirSamuelVimes

I bloody loved Brigadoon as a kid. Not seen it in years, sort of afraid to in case it ruins the memories!

And yeah, Romy & Michelle is an awesome film!

High Society is one of my favourite films of all time. Grace Kelly (her final film) Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, Louis Armstrong. Brilliant. I know lots of other people must like it too, I just haven't met them!

I LOVE High Society. So much so that DD's middle name is Grace!

@zombielady

Blue lagoon. Dying to watch it again but can't find it.

Rent for £3.99!

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 03/07/2021 23:35

High Society is one of my favourite films ever!

BeReet · 04/07/2021 09:37

Gone in 60 Seconds is my favourite film of all time. If Nic Cage is in in I will watch so I've watched some stinkers 🤣 A few of my other faves are already here - Calamity Jane, Armageddon, Con Air, among others. I've never seen Romy & Michelle but it's going on the watchlist now!

SirSamuelVimes · 04/07/2021 09:45

Yay, High Society fans!

GolfEchoRomeoTangoIndia · 04/07/2021 10:38

High Society is amazing, except for the bit at the end where her philandering father turns up and says that he wouldn’t have been such a philandering bastard if his daughter had been a bit more womanly and treated him like the centre of the universe, and she says “thank you daddy, I have now grown and learned to be more forgiving”.

SirSamuelVimes · 04/07/2021 11:19

Well yes, it's of its time! Though I think it's not bad on the psychology of Tracy - hurt by her father's cheating on her mother, she's protecting herself by demanding total perfection or total deference in the men around her. Perfection fails (first marriage) so she attempts deference (second fiancé). Ultimately realises that she needs to be able to accept those she loves have flaws if she's going to be happy.

Plus Grace Kelly does the absolute best acting drunk / acting hungover ever. The "oh" as she comes out the door into bright sunlight on the morning of her wedding, having been absolutely blattered the night before, is sublime. As is the "I must have had too much sun yesterday" complete with melodramatic hand to forehead. Marvellous film!

MareMare · 04/07/2021 18:02

I love High Society and far prefer it to The Philadelphia Story in which I find Katherine Hepburn, whom I generally admire, incredibly irritating. Especially when she says ‘She was yar!!’ I love the casting in High Society, especially Celeste Holm.

IeatPotNoodles · 04/07/2021 18:48

@CheerfulBunny

Romy and Michelle's High School Reunion - no one else gets it. Banging soundtrack.
Me and my sisters LOVE this film!!!!
Echobelly · 04/07/2021 18:53

Adventures of Baron Munchausen

Cloud Atlas

SydneyCarton · 04/07/2021 19:09

Lot of love for Calamity Jane and Grease 2 here as well. I also love A League of their Own (women playing professional baseball in WW2 while the male players are away fighting). Sweet and sentimental without being mawkish, Gina Davis and Lori Petty as sisters with a love/hate relationship and a not-actually-that-bad effort from Madonna. Often found on Saturday afternoons on ITV3 Grin

GolfEchoRomeoTangoIndia · 04/07/2021 19:34

Yes the hangover scene in High Society is amazing I love literally all of it apart from Tracy’s appalling father blaming his behaviour on her.

mag2305 · 04/07/2021 19:37

There's an old 50s film I like called The Night of the Hunter. Don't know if anyone else has seen it? It's a bit of a strange one but Robert Mitchum is brilliant as a pycho preacher with his iconic hate/love tattoos on his knuckles. I think it was directed by Charles Laughton.
