Julie Bindel and JK Rowling laughing about the Musk Nazi salute incident

Thought someone might have already done a thread on this. I don’t always agree with Bindel but had a lot of time for her, but this has really surprised me. Not sure why they would be finding it amusing - Musk and Trump are hardly figures of fun, for feminists especially, whatever you think of the (clearly far right!) salute.

@MrGHardy what other hand movement does this gesture represent?! Well for one it represents the gesture of a somewhat physically awkward individual saying “thank you” thumping his heart and then flinging out his arm and saying “my heart goes out to you”.

I have never seen anyone thank anyone like that. Show some video evidence of this happening.

MrGHardy · 24/01/2025 20:03

Rummly · 24/01/2025 19:59

Um, I think the point being made is that it wasn’t a salute at all, just an excitable man gesturing to the audience. You’re starting in the wrong place.

This reminds me of some fool online who thought Starmer’s “release the sausages” was proof that he didn’t care about Israeli hostages and was in league with Hamas.

If it looks like a duck...but sure come up with even more excuses. Again, link a video of someone else. Can't be that hard, it's so common after all.

It’s not an “excuse”. No one’s “excusing” Musk of anything.

You think Musk was doing a Himmler. Others disagree.

It looked like a guy dancing onto stage, putting his hand on his heart and waving at people in front of him, and then doing it again to people behind him.

FancyRedRobin · 24/01/2025 20:15

The fact is that Rowling could have sat this one out, but instead brought herself into it. I think it seriously discredits her. Musk does not lack for supporters.

I'd have preferred if Elon had said "no way that's a Nazi salute, that's horrendously offensive and I support the Jewish community". Instead it's this "no biggie" childish lame response which basically trivialises the accusation.

Already I'm sick of the Trump governments media games, they spent the last four years trolling the sh!t out of people, to distract from their sh!tty policies. I'm sick of the obvious troll and then the faux innocence after the fact.

He performed what obviously was a Hitler salute. You are saying he was doing something else. Show me that something else. All I am asking. You can end this right now, show it.

Hahahahaha

Waving. Ok then

And?

After 6 solid years of being called a nazi herself, along with the wall to wall rape and death threats she laughs at the Musk Derangement going on. She is fully entitled to do so.

People really need to stop being so authoritarian and lighten the fuck up.

Rummly · 24/01/2025 20:23

It wasn’t obviously a Hitler salute. It was described by a pp a few posts above yours.

I’d say it was obviously not a Hitler salute.

I’d think differently if Musk had stood to attention and clicked his heels together.

🙄

FancyRedRobin · 24/01/2025 20:29

Musk Derangement? This isn't a thing.
What it is yet another stupid term to dismiss people's concerns about what he says and does and deflect the responsibility of that onto his audience, rather than on him.

Are we all seeing different news? Is anyone worried about his behavior recently and his recommendation that Tommy Robinson be PM?
Are we meant to take him seriously for some things and not for others? Was that a joke?

He wields enormous influence yet wears it like a teenager who has "borrowed" his parents car. Careless af.

And yes this had absolutely nothing to do with Rowling and her putting herself into it was monumentally stupid, unless of course she has other plans.

"People really need to stop being so authoritarian and lighten the fuck up."

Interesting that the people saying this kind of stuff are defending actual authoritarians...

Not believing his stage antics included a Hitler salute isn’t “defending” Musk.

I don’t like him. I didn’t like his tweets about UK social issues. I don’t like his attacks on the UK government - any UK government. I especially don’t like any support of his for Tommy Robinson.

I just don’t think he did a Hitler salute.

It’s not difficult.

AzurePanda · 24/01/2025 21:10

@Rummly it’s actually ridiculous that this even needs saying but here we are.

twistingleaves · 24/01/2025 21:14

@Rummly that wasn't specifically directed at you, but hitler salutes aside you will find lots of comments throughout this thread that are defending or denying the behaviour and right wing ideology of Trump, Musk and Tommy Robinson.

MrGHardy · 24/01/2025 21:35

If it obviously wasn't, there must be something else it could reasonably be. What? I have repeatedly asked for evidence of someone doing this and it's not a Hitler salute. Crickets.

AzurePanda · 24/01/2025 21:37

@MrGHardy it has been repeatedly explained to you what he was doing.

You have repeatedly refused to provide any video evidence of someone else doing what he was doing.

Will you ever do so?

That’s such a stupid argument. It’s not taken to be a Hitler salute unless it’s proven to your satisfaction otherwise.

People have seen it and made up their own minds.

🤦‍♀️

AlisonDonut · 24/01/2025 22:41

Mr Hardy. You are not our manager. You don't get to boss us about.

If you don't like Elon Musk, stay off of X and don't buy a Tesla car.

It has nothing to do with my satisfaction. I am simply asking if you can provide any evidence whatsoever that this arm movement is a wave or a common gesture. If it is, you should have no trouble finding videos of politicians, leaders doing it. That's simple logic and has nothing to do with me.

For all I know, it is. I don't know everything. E.g. the swastika is all over India, it has a completely different meaning. If someone was wearing clothes with that symbol and someone called them a Nazi, they could show evidence that it has a different meaning. That is literally all I am asking for.

I am not bossing you about. In an discussion it is quite common to ask people to provide evidence. Will you ever provide evidence or keep up your charade? I mean this is over as soon as you provide it. What is stopping you?

I am not on X and I don't own a Tesla. I am not sure what your point is.

FancyRedRobin · 24/01/2025 23:24

Maybe those who were saying that he didn't do a Nazi salute could go into work on Monday and do what he did a few times in front of their boss?

Dead harmless, no one would misconstrue it....

Or even just put their hand up here and say that they've done this exact gesture in public a number of times? Seeing as it's such a common gesture...
