Julie Bindel and JK Rowling laughing about the Musk Nazi salute incident

Thought someone might have already done a thread on this. I don’t always agree with Bindel but had a lot of time for her, but this has really surprised me. Not sure why they would be finding it amusing - Musk and Trump are hardly figures of fun, for feminists especially, whatever you think of the (clearly far right!) salute.

And you are ignoring that his dad was a politician in the party that ended Apartheid in South Africa.

Elon Musk is a fucking creep, no question. But when you distort history to try to "gotcha!!" his family, you feed the narrative of the people who want us to think there is absolutely no nuance (yes, I know you perhaps hate that term and think it's alt right - if so, you're a useful idiot) because the opposition (which they will equate to the left, but it is not only the left) rails against everything that questions it. They will say you smear him, and you do - not because he isn't awful, but because you have absolutely no idea at all what being awful meant in 1990s SA, or what it means in RSA or USA now.

Go back. Criticise Musk for what he does, not what you heard about him from notoriously unreliable sources.

Also the sources of this information are not unreliable. These are actual respectable journalists who have done extensive research. Your mental gymnastics here is absolutely ridiculous.

The most sinister aspect of this thread is the conceit that if you are not prepared to go along with the idea that Musk was for some reason doing a full on Nazi salute in the middle of a laughing sentence about gratitude (while wearing a necklace for the hostages!) it somehow tells everyone everything about you. I.e that you are part of some sort of hideous fascist / racist movement.

Given the various groups and commentators who have dismissed the notion that it was a Nazi salute as fatuous, It would be laughable if it wasn’t so dangerous.

twistingleaves · 13/02/2025 14:55

@AzurePanda the road to fascism is lined with people telling you to stop overreacting.

The British and Irish have a history of laughing at Nazis and Nazism. For example Monty Python and Father Ted.

JKR and Bindel weren't laughing at Nazis. They were laughing at the people disgusted with the open fascist salute. They're not Mel Brooks mocking Nazis, they're Diana Mitford.

AzurePanda · 13/02/2025 16:02

@twistingleaves well the road to insane identity politics certainly was.

That’s not a “far right salute”. Whatever that is.

Thanks for your input, I don’t think I’ve seen anyone else make that point in the many replies this thread’s had so far.

It’s so important. I thought I’d make it again.

I don't know. It looked to me like they were laughing at Musk claiming he hadn't meant to do a Nazi salute, eg he did it by accident.

Yes, in the time that’s passed since the original post, it really feels like the most important point. No other alarming incidents I can think of. Panic over, phew.

Nope. There was sharing of the static images of other politicians that were being used to disingenuously claim it was just a wave, and that people were 'over-reacting'. Not all collaborators need to be dyed in the wool fascist enthusiasts. Plenty can be the ones pouring scorn on those raising the alarm. If you're reading this, what exactly is your red line? At what point do you realise you're complicit and recalibrate your trajectory? I used to think 'prosecco stormfront' was a ridiculous label for this place, because so many here were adamant their left-leaning motivation was the protection of women and girls. It's been horrific to watch a the evolution of it as a demonstration of impact versus intent. Whatever the intent, it has enabled the hard right. The impact has outstripped whatever noble sounding sentiments Rowling wrote in that essay. And everyone will pay for it.

And yet here you are.

Nothing else has happened to me to be honest.
