Julie Bindel and JK Rowling laughing about the Musk Nazi salute incident

Thought someone might have already done a thread on this. I don’t always agree with Bindel but had a lot of time for her, but this has really surprised me. Not sure why they would be finding it amusing - Musk and Trump are hardly figures of fun, for feminists especially, whatever you think of the (clearly far right!) salute.

@HumHU3 ok, then forbears. To be an active participant or collaborator in the death camps you would now be aged 100 at the very minimum.

Nobody appointed me anything, it’s just a factual observation and a not very original one at that.

J K Rowling used the name Robert Galbraith to write her books for grown ups.

Robert Galbraith pioneered the horrific conversion therapy for gay people.

It's like writing under the pen name of Josef Mengele.

She knew exactly what she was doing.

But everyone loves her 🤷🏻‍♀️

What utter twaddle 🙄

It was a joke about JK Rowling/JK Galbraith.

There are a lot of reasons to dislike Tommy Robinson and I can't pretend otherwise. You may also argue that his motives are a bit suspect. But that doesn't change the very strong likelihood that he has been silenced, censored and punished by the establishment for repeatly exposing some uncomfortable truths that the establishment would prefer stayed out of the public domain for the sake of 'social cohesion.'

This is literally such an embarrassing post for you that I’m experiencing insanely severe second hand cringe oh my god 🫣 you still have time to delete this b. It’s not too late, I promise

Enough4me · 31/01/2025 00:31

OP, if you're honest, were you hoping to persuade people away from respecting Bindel and JKR?
Epic fail 🤣

BookishGardenEnthusiast · 31/01/2025 08:15

Are you aware of Musk‘s link with the AfD in Germany? His praise of Alice Weidel/the AfD and his appearance at an AfD event? I grew up in East Germany and left in the 1990s because I already did not like the far right getting stronger back then. From what I hear, read and see - it’s much much worse now as far right ideology is seeping into the mainstream. There’s a real thread to all of us and the freedoms we enjoy. Fact: Musk is amplifying far right views - Nazi salute or not.

AzurePanda · 31/01/2025 08:33

I think everyone is aware of Musk’s support for the AfD but that doesn’t make him a Nazi not make his gesture a Nazi salute. The hard right has obviously become a substantial force in France, Amsterdam, Austria, Germany and of course Hungary amongst other countries. This clearly reflects something far bigger than his support.

I remain far more perturbed by the wave of anti semitism we are seeing around the world currently.

Damn, you got me! I’m a secret trans activist on a mission to bring down JB and Rowling, one mumsnet post at a time.

@7plusthinking I don't think that's the kind of thing you can be a university expert on. I think you might have to think for yourself on this one.

Personally inclined not to give Musk any benefit of the doubt at all.

Auldlang · 01/02/2025 12:13

@MrGHardy stupid example, the swastika is "all over" India (and Nepal) because it originated here. It meant "something different" BEFORE Hitler got his hands on it.

One thing I appreciate about this so called furore is it really has allowed people to forgo the pleasantries and just plainly tell everyone where they stand, and what they are. Like the post I've quoted - no talking around the houses - straight to the point. 'The nazi salute given by the man who supports the Nazi sympathiser party is nothing at all to do with Nazism.' The last sentence jumps the shark somewhat but again, people feel much more emboldened in telling you exactly what they are. These people aren't interested in any discourse because we're at the stage where they're very much telling you that you didn't see something that you very much saw. Frankly it would have been surprising if Bindel and JK didn't find common ground with Musk.

AzurePanda · 02/02/2025 17:40

@DojaPhat , you’re absolutely right, as Musk is capable of understanding the concept of biological sex it would have indeed been very surprising if Julie Bindel and JK Rowling couldn’t find some common ground with him.

Not really interested in J K Rowling but I’ve respected Bindel even when I’ve disagreed with her and thought accusations of aligning with the right were far fetched.

This has made me totally rethink and alarmed me. As you’ve suggested, it now feels like people are being more explicit when it comes to sympathising or supporting with the far right, at a time when the people who don’t share its values need to be united against its spread.

It’s scary how much has shifted over these past few years and how eg the trans issue has been manipulated to fracture opposition against the right. I’ll never understand how anyone claiming to be a feminist could genuinely support Trump’s understanding of ‘biological reality’ and not see how that plays out for women.

Has musk not proved himself enough of a fascist for you yet?

NotTerfNorCis · 12/02/2025 22:11

The British and Irish have a history of laughing at Nazis and Nazism. For example Monty Python and Father Ted.

I'm no fan of Musk, think he's a nob and a dangerous nob at that, but calling that gesture a nazi salute is bloody ridiculous, and I am also all over X ridiculing those that are up in arms about it. It makes you look pathetic and is detrimental to your cause, because if you cannot believe your own eyes, context, view the full video etc then why should anyone listen to anything else you have to say. Your own prejudices are showing, and showing that you cannot be trusted.

Elon’s grandparents were literally members of a Canadian nazi party in the 50s. They moved to South Africa because they liked the fact that it was an apartheid country in which blacks were legally subjugated. How can you ignore these obvious facts! It’s so shocking how so many of you are brainwashed into thinking it was a meaningless gesture.

AzurePanda · 12/02/2025 22:45

@Timewilltell519 wait until you hear how many people in Germany and Austria had grandparents who were Nazis, not to mention the same for Italy and Fascists.

And you are ignoring that his dad was a politician in the party that ended Apartheid in South Africa.

Elon Musk is a fucking creep, no question. But when you distort history to try to "gotcha!!" his family, you feed the narrative of the people who want us to think there is absolutely no nuance (yes, I know you perhaps hate that term and think it's alt right - if so, you're a useful idiot) because the opposition (which they will equate to the left, but it is not only the left) rails against everything that questions it. They will say you smear him, and you do - not because he isn't awful, but because you have absolutely no idea at all what being awful meant in 1990s SA, or what it means in RSA or USA now.

Go back. Criticise Musk for what he does, not what you heard about him from notoriously unreliable sources.

Timewilltell519 · 13/02/2025 07:07

It was not a ‘gottcha’ it was reminding readers about the history of his family with the nazi party. You are also conveniently ignoring his amplification of far right groups and racists on x. It’s all very convenient isn’t it. Tesla sales have dropped as people are not willing to be associated with a nazi sympathiser. Open your eyes and stop being deluded.

I’m sure lots were but if they are not replicating the behaviour of their forefathers then I have no problem with this, but if someone blatantly and obviously supports far rights and racists then that’s a different story and obvious indicates that the allegiances haven’t changed.
