Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Thanks for the new thread, @harriethoyle . Doing a mini today. Had a protein shake earlier and will have something high-protein for dinner.

berryhand · 14/01/2024 14:18

Thanks @harriethoyle, slaloming in

Talkinpeace · 14/01/2024 15:43

Place marking.
Not doing great on fasting, but logging food is helping.

Onehappymam · 14/01/2024 15:43

Thank you for the new thread!

Hello!

JemimaFuddle · 14/01/2024 16:09

Hello, will be fasting tomorrow. I need it after the delicious Sunday lunch I just had!

berryhand · 14/01/2024 18:44

I'm joining you @JemimaFuddle after having two takeaways this weekend 😬

distrussful · 15/01/2024 06:22

Also fasting today after a weekend away. Not looking forward to it !

berryhand · 15/01/2024 09:12

Going to attempt a b2b today and tomorrow I think. Somehow harder when it's so bloody cold!

JemimaFuddle · 15/01/2024 14:32

I'm not enjoying my fast today. The cold coupled with the "new year, new me" momentum fading is making it tough.

harriethoyle · 15/01/2024 14:52

MN is trolling me, reminding me to post on this thread just after a lunch of fried potatoes, onions, egg and bacon 🤣

I'm going to need to do 5:2 when I'm back. 5 FDs!

I am soooooo jealous, that sounds amazing!

MikeHannigansStripyShirt · 15/01/2024 17:02

My first fast of the New Year has been a bit of a challenge. It’s sooooo cold! I’ve powered through so far on black tea, coffee and water and a bowl of soup. Will have another bowl of soup for tea and call that a win.

harriethoyle · 15/01/2024 17:05

Austrian food is amazing @JemimaFuddle but NOTHING about it is healthy 🤣🙈 not the traditional stuff anyway!

Hi all been fasting for awhile but everyday and stalled . Trying 5:2 my normal fast is 18 hours is this sufficient?
This evening had veg and fish , blueberries and strawberries after. Does this sound ok ?

Tinydancer123 · 15/01/2024 19:30

Ps I am new here lovely to meet you all.

sweetgingercat · 15/01/2024 21:21

Hi @harriethoyle, nice to see you are still running things here in continuing good style! I hope you’re having a good time skiing…

I am fasting today. It’s harder when it’s so cold I think. I’ve done my usual salad with half a mini goats cheese (bought cheaply in France and frozen in portions) and an egg and some kimchi and kitchen is closed on 562. I’m hoping to be back here tomorrow for a b2b, anyone else fasting tomorrow?

berryhand · 16/01/2024 11:33

That sounds ok @Tinydancer123 just make sure you are eating enough on non FDs or it's really hard.

I managed 660 calories yesterday for my first day of b2b. Today is definitely harder but I am now under 80kg for the first time in ages so that is definitely helping me to push through! Planning soup for lunch and some veg noodles for tea.

@harriethoyle I am so jealous of your Austrian food, sounds incredible

@berryhand thank you for the lovely reply ! I did an 18 hour yest with 521 cals. Today no fast and sticking to my 1246 which I worked out on the calculator. It feels strange as I normally fast every day ! Do you suggest AD or just twice a week ?

Tinydancer123 · 16/01/2024 17:32

Ps @berryhand how many days b2b do you do ?

berryhand · 16/01/2024 17:57

There are others much more experienced in this than me @Tinydancer123 but I think the idea is on non FD you eat your "maintenance" calories (the amount you should eat to maintain your current weight. And don't do more than two days b2b (when you have an increased allowance of 650 cals per day), so tomorrow will be a normal non FD for me 😊

Sunshineofyourlove · 16/01/2024 17:59

Jumping on to the new thread even though I haven't been doing too brilliantly. The cold weather makes it so difficult!

Managed 4 16:8 days last week, but no FD. On track for a mini FD today but I am premenstrual and it's HARD! Well done to everyone making such a success of low calorie FDs, I'm going to read back through the posts for inspiration 👏

Sunshineofyourlove · 16/01/2024 18:05

Actually on the reread it seems that loads of us are struggling in the cold conditions! Winter is a real obstacle to so many things. I only just made it back from work through terrible snow, and now I am craving carbs! I am going to resist tho...

distrussful · 16/01/2024 19:52

Looks like no one's having a great time! I failed completely yesterday and have managed today but only because I had a filling earlier and couldn't eat if I tried.

Hows everyone getting on? I think it will get easier next week when it's slightly less freezing.

sweetgingercat · 16/01/2024 20:49

Evening all,

yes @Sunshineofyourlove and @distrussful I’m finding it hard in the cold weather, but mostly because I hate drinking water when it’s cold! So I end up a bit dehydrated.

When I was on before, about two years ago, quite a few people here would do a B2b (650) on Monday and Tuesday and get them finished early doors so they could do another one on Thursday. I liked doing that. There was someone, I can’t remember who, who did 3 days in a row. And there were some who did 2 fast days and then 3 days on 16:8. And there is a more extreme version where people do an 800 a day fast for 3 weeks or so to do a quick drop, but I don’t think I could do that! Happy fasting for the few hours left!
