Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

I’m fasting today too. My period arrived last week (remember the cake and wine fast day fail?! That was why!!) so I only did that one Monday fast. I’m not going to beat myself up or overcompensate, just back on the Mon/Thurs plan this week.

I’m about 3lbs down from when I started a few weeks ago, and am pleased 😊

harriethoyle · 28/01/2024 18:14

well done @JemimaFuddle I am always in awe of weekend fasters!

We had an extremely robust and very lovely 80th birthday party for MIL yesterday at which I drank FAR too much and now I am suffering. Almost looking forward to tomorrow's FD for a bit of recovery time 😂

@harriethoyle I won't be making a habit of weekend fasting but after the huge amount I ate on Saturday.

Good luck Monday fasters!

Tinydancer123 · 29/01/2024 15:35

Hi all, I hope you are all well. On a fast day and think also my huge weekend binge is period related. I hope you have all had a good day. I am having a tuna and egg wraps for tea :)

berryhand · 29/01/2024 20:07

Kitchen closing here circa 650. Was starving this morning but got better as the day went on. Fruit and grain bar for breakfast, tuna thin for lunch (inspo @harriethoyle) and M&S count on us risotto for tea.

Tomorrow planning to have a Hello Fresh thing but have a quarter portion for both lunch and tea and some fat free Greek yoghurt with blueberries for breakfast.

Out at a work dinner Weds eve so that will definitely be a non FD.

Hope everyone's Monday has gone well!

harriethoyle · 29/01/2024 20:54

Kitchen closing on 738. Absolutely starving tonight and then realised that was probably because I didn't have supper last night so have inadvertently extended my fast 🤣🙈

I'll aim for similar tomorrow I think and take it as a good enough b2b...

I’ve finished on 532 which is a good fast day I think! I’m really enjoying sparkling water on my fast days - normally I just drink tap water but fizzy stuff feels fancy which is fun! Well done to all the other Monday fasters and good luck to the B2Bers

harriethoyle · 30/01/2024 08:46

Literally only 100g off this morning which made me feel stabby! Almost sacked it off for a croissant but I'm persevering with a b2b today...

OP posts:
berryhand · 30/01/2024 09:49

That is so annoying @harriethoyle! Hopefully it'll mean a nice big loss at the end of the week. I'm with you for the b2b too, bloody starving this morning again.

sweetgingercat · 30/01/2024 10:35

Morning all, kitchen closed at around 600 last night after a really boring day of salad and prawns and half a chocolate hot cross bun which I found in the kitchen and was only 104 cals. Not a good low carb day for me! Onwards and upwards…

@harriethoyle good on you for not reaching for that croissant in frustration. Weight comes off in fits and starts and I’m sure you’ll lose more to compensate shortly…

harriethoyle · 30/01/2024 10:37

Ooooh @sweetgingercat I love a HCB - the advantage of Easter being early this year is that they're already in the shops in their droves!! Think I've sorted Friday morning's post fast brekkie now 🤗

OP posts:
JemimaFuddle · 30/01/2024 12:54

I'm doing my second fast today as I will be pre menstrual at the end of the week so easier to do it today!

sweetgingercat · 30/01/2024 13:14

@harriethoyle I love them now they have lots of different flavours. And I was surprised at how low cal they are. Having half yesterday was entirely do-able.

On another note I see Rishi Sunak does a water/coffee/tea fast from 7pm Sunday evening until 7am Tuesday morning. Half of me is impressed and the other half of me things he's already super tiny, what's the point? And a naughty part of me things, not surprising he's so tetchy, he's obviously starving!

Right, then, political bitch over, onwards and upwards!

harriethoyle · 30/01/2024 14:01

I confess @sweetgingercat when I heard that at lunchtime (whilst ravenously devouring my 200 cal tuna thin) I did, rather tartly, enquire if there was a correlation between decisions made by him on a Monday and the current shitshow...!!

Hi everyone! Didn't manage yesterday as was a tiiiny bit hungover ... so am on first day of B2B today, v jealous of those of you on second day! At the dentist later though so hopefully won't be too hard. Good luck to all the B2Bs!

berryhand · 30/01/2024 19:06

Hope dentist was ok @distrussful, I hate going 😫

Very glad to be nearing the end of my b2b. Have such a busy day at work tomorrow though!

Kitchen closing here on 672. Going to have a peppermint tea before bed.

harriethoyle · 30/01/2024 20:38

Kitchen closing here on 768. Am still starving! But glad I pushed through after this morning's disappointment 😊

distrussful · 31/01/2024 07:10

Well done both! I managed at about 550 and second one today. V envious but hope you enjoy a normal day today!

Tinydancer123 · 31/01/2024 09:09

Where are the hotcross buns from ? I am on a b2b today and tomoz. I remained the same on the weigh in Monday. Fingers crossed for a big push today and tomoz :) Goodluck all

harriethoyle · 31/01/2024 09:31

A measley half kilo off in the last two days. Bah!!

Will eat normally today, and third FD tomorrow. see if I can jump start things...

OP posts:
distrussful · 31/01/2024 10:22

@harriethoyle I know it's obvious but have you been drinking enough water, walking etc? I find all of that together does help to jump start a bit!

JemimaFuddle · 31/01/2024 10:26

0.4 pounds off this week which is doesn't seem like very much. I think in part it's due to my last weight being post stomach upset!

harriethoyle · 31/01/2024 10:27

Nope @distrussful I have been entirely sedentary and I am WOEFUL at drinking water 😂Been so so busy at work since I got back from skiing that the chance of any week day exercise has gone out the window. Need to try and tackle that once tomorrow is done (the next looming deadline...). I shall commit to an extra dog walk Friday when I'm WFH!

Better than my 0.4 pounds!
Well done on your loss.

harriethoyle · 31/01/2024 10:29

Yeah but I put on half a kilo at the weekend @JemimaFuddle So really I'm just back to where I was 😂

morning all

Is there room for a new joiner ? (well a returner but not been here since 2020!)

I was at my lowest and healthiest just prior to covid but the lockdowns messed with my brain, and fulltime home working . home schooling, kids mental health etc broke me. Things at home eventually settled and last summer I started to introduce some 16:8 to gently get things going again... I lost nearly few kgs doing that but then tailed off..... I think now is the time to try proper 5 2 again. probably won't fast this week as still recovering from a d&v bug but looking at either the weekend or early next week for my first FD in almost 4 years!
