Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

Well done @Tinydancer123! Always nice to see your efforts paying off. I usually end up doing about a 16-hour fast following a FD (have last food about 5pm, then breakfast about 9am the next day)

Tinydancer123 · 25/01/2024 11:40

harriethoyle · 25/01/2024 11:29

I'm ravenous too @Tinydancer123 and it's only 11.30am! Howl!!

I am the same.... .fast should end around 15:00 ......we have got this !

berryhand · 25/01/2024 14:08

How are we all doing? I am starving now, had a cup-a-soup for lunch and some grapes. Have an M&S ready meal to have later which I am already dreaming of!

harriethoyle · 25/01/2024 14:28

I've had my sandwich @berryhand and am wondering what's for the main course 😂stupidly busy afternoon and then I have to do a load of domestic duties when I get home from work before I can veg on the sofa and enjoy my virtuous tea...

berryhand · 25/01/2024 15:34

I have cracked and already scoffed my M&S meal 😱Going to need a lot of willpower for the rest of the day and a VERY early night

sweetgingercat · 25/01/2024 15:42

Well done @Tinydancer123 that's a good loss!

I'm still going strong on an apple so far! I really try to do as much low carb as I can on fast days because I find it helps stop me being hungry. And I also eat a few no fat 8 calorie butterscotch drops from M&S to help me on the way. Not too many though as they can really mess up your stomach the following day!

Not too long to go now, especially with an early night!

sweetgingercat · 25/01/2024 18:21

@berryhand oh I've been there, we all have! Good luck with the rest of the evening

berryhand · 25/01/2024 18:44

Had to have an emergency cup of bovril @sweetgingercat but nearly there now!

harriethoyle · 25/01/2024 19:47

Kitchen closing on 632 although I'm still starving 🤣

Tinydancer123 · 25/01/2024 19:51

Well done all ! Ok yest was within 500 today was 725 ! I cracked with 42 parents at parents evening and had 3 mars celebrations:( I am hopeful I have not wrecked it ! I hope you all have a good evening x

Tinydancer123 · 25/01/2024 19:53

That is a good plan to do low carb and I think where I went wrong today .

berryhand · 25/01/2024 21:08

Kitchen closing on 502 here so pretty happy with that. And very much looking forward to breakfast tomorrow!!

Three mini mars is a very minor stumble @Tinydancer123 don't beat yourself up!

sweetgingercat · 25/01/2024 22:54

Kitchen closed on 595 tonight. Well done everyone, good luck to those fasting tomorrow and see you back again next Monday. I hope you are on the mend @JemimaFuddle!

harriethoyle · 26/01/2024 10:01

Well done everyone - an excellent week! high fives all round

See you back here on Monday (unless any hardy souls are doing weekend FDs). I'm fasting M/T/Th and I am putting it on here to keep myself accountable!

OP posts:
berryhand · 26/01/2024 14:40

Have a great weekend @harriethoyle and everyone else. Absolutely not doing a weekend FD, but will be with you Monday for sure.

distrussful · 26/01/2024 18:37

Have lovely weekends everyone! Managed yesterday and have a stomach bug today so my grand Friday plans are lying in bed with the dog... at least it'll keep the calories down 😂. See you on Monday!

Tinydancer123 · 26/01/2024 19:02

Hi all ! Happy weekend all and well done.

I am down another pound and today is TDDE. Trying to keep it low key !

See you next week

JemimaFuddle · 28/01/2024 12:22

I'm fasting today because I are loads last night and am still quite full so I'm going with it. I've never done a weekend fast day today!

Tinydancer123 · 28/01/2024 13:02

Amazing work ! I hope it goes well. I am too late for a fast.

I think I have over eaten today and yest . Hope I haven't messed up too much ! So far only
one glass of wine this weekend . Was going to have a few this evening but only have 500 cals left 😬

What TDDE calculator do you all use ?

JemimaFuddle · 28/01/2024 18:13

I actually don't count on non fast days, (although I try to make sensible choices) so haven't used a TDEE calculator. I've lost half a stone since the beginning of the year this way. I think I will need to start counting when I get closer to a healthy weight.

harriethoyle · 28/01/2024 18:14

well done @JemimaFuddle I am always in awe of weekend fasters!

We had an extremely robust and very lovely 80th birthday party for MIL yesterday at which I drank FAR too much and now I am suffering. Almost looking forward to tomorrow's FD for a bit of recovery time 😂

berryhand · 28/01/2024 18:41

Hope everyone has had a nice weekend! Sounds like there have been some nice plans. I went out for tapas and cocktails last night so definitely not had the healthiest two days.

Fasting with you tomorrow @harriethoyle

harriethoyle · 29/01/2024 08:36

Morning all! Signing in for day 1 of a b2b. Tuna thin and either baked fish or canneloni depending on what DH finds at Aldi 🤣

OP posts:
berryhand · 29/01/2024 09:03

Morning @harriethoyle! Joining you today, was going to do a normal FD but might actually do a b2b and then a FD Friday too.

sweetgingercat · 29/01/2024 09:13

Morning @harriethoyle and @berryhand I also had a rather drunken Friday night - not the most healthy. Back here for a B2B today and tomorrow, salad and goats cheese at the ready… Good luck all!
