Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

I did this a few years ago, kept it off for a while but a stone has managed to creep back on.

So this thread has inspired me to start again.

Whats the significance of b2b? Does it do anything different, or is it just to get it out of the way?

distrussful · 22/01/2024 08:44

Amazing @harriethoyle we can keep each other accountable!

I have got red lentil soup and am making a protein smoothie which gets me 90g of protein for about 500 cals. Should end just over 620 for both.

harriethoyle · 22/01/2024 08:49

Morning @PaperSky - a B2B means you get 1300 cals over two days rather than 500 for one. I tend to do c. 650 each day but other people are disciplined on the first day at 500 and then have a gargantuan 800 on day 2.

Also gets 2 fd done really quickly which is always helpful particularly if you need to fit a third in to get holiday weight etc off looks innocent and whistles

Morning all, I’m in for a B2B today and tomorrow, salad and cheese is all ready! Good luck everyone!

JemimaFuddle · 22/01/2024 10:17

I'm not fasting today as I usually would on a Monday as I'm meeting up with a friend tonight. Back to back tomorrow and Wednesday which I'm pretty nervous about.

Tinydancer123 · 22/01/2024 12:33

Hi all, I was going to do one fast day and then 2b2 on Weds and Thursday.... may change and join you all to get it out of the way with :)

harriethoyle · 22/01/2024 16:14

So far, so good - I've been incredibly busy as it's my first proper day back so that's really helped. Home by 6 all being well and supper pretty quickly thereafter I suspect!

I'm going to attempt a Monday roll call so apologies if I miss anyone out...

Kitchen closed (by the skin of my teeth!) on 493. I was SO tempted to make a slice of (delicious, home made bread) toast and butter, but I’ve made a cup of black tea and am resisting. Well done to all today’s fasters!

harriethoyle · 22/01/2024 20:20

That's a top notch fd @MikeHannigansStripyShirt 😀

Thank you @harriethoyle <bows> 🤣

sweetgingercat · 22/01/2024 20:31

Still going here. It's been a good day and I've kept myself busy - 312 so far. I'll have a mini salad before I go to bed. Well done everyone, see you back tomorrow!

harriethoyle · 23/01/2024 06:36

Hopped on the scales this morning and the skiing weight/plane bloat is gone. Back to my NYD level.

Now to tackle the Christmas weight which I suspect will prove more stubborn! Who's with me today? Chicken thin, and canneloni and broccoli again 💪

I’m fasting today… and feeling good so far! I’ve got my salad ready, with a wrap today. I’m a creature of habit when it comes to fasting!

JemimaFuddle · 23/01/2024 12:35

I was planning to fast today but I seem to have a vomiting bug so can't eat anything - i guess this counts?

sweetgingercat · 23/01/2024 13:06

Oh no @JemimaFuddle That sounds horrible. I hope you feel better soon.

I am the same ! I end my fast with a wrap and salad :)

berryhand · 23/01/2024 14:59

I'm fasting today! Great work everyone so far this week. I did not have a healthy weekend so darent get on the scales till the end of this week...

harriethoyle · 23/01/2024 15:40

Same @sweetgingercat I basically rotate the same plan A lunch (tuna thin) and dinner (canneloni), until I get bored and bring in plan B lunch (chicken thin) and dinner (basked fish). Currently mixing plan B lunch and plan A dinner because I'm CRAZY like that! 😂

MikeHannigansStripyShirt · 23/01/2024 16:22

I’m on fast day number two of the week, unexpected plans arose for Thurs and today is the only day I can do it! I’m allowing myself 800, which added to yesterday’s almost 500 equals 650 per day. It has been a bit of a struggle but I’ve made it so far on water, water, more water, coffee, a fizzy water and more water. V much looking forward to my tea which will be a massive pile of vegetables and some eggs. I might have enough calories left for a little slice of the homemade bread I resisted yesterday

@JemimaFuddle I hope you’re feeling better soon

MikeHannigansStripyShirt · 23/01/2024 20:58

Just checking in to report a fast day fail - there was cake and wine…..!

I think I just got too hungry to ignore it. Maybe too soon to try two fast days together

harriethoyle · 23/01/2024 21:07

Well, if you're going to fail you might as well do it in style @MikeHannigansStripyShirt !

I'm holding off reporting today's final total because I suspect I might have to have a toasted thin before bed or I won't sleep! Probably will be around 800 ish which isn't too bad for first b2b back

OP posts:
MikeHannigansStripyShirt · 23/01/2024 21:12

Haha @harriethoyle !! Three slices of cake and two glasses of wine is certainly failing with style! 800ish is great, well done 👏🏻
