Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

I've just had lunch @harriethoyle and planning an earlier tea and early bed. I've been staying up late watching Bridgerton the last couple of weeks which has led to many snaccidents. Finished it now so I have no excuse...

Whatapickle78 · 20/06/2024 07:42

FD 2 starts today !

thank you for all the tips! I will try the black coffee, and also buy some fizzy water today to have with lemon…

Realised my salad dressings were the culprit on Tuesday. The olive oil….

I’ll need to try other dressing ideas (or none) on FDs. What are your faves?

good luck everyone else fasting today! :)

harriethoyle · 20/06/2024 11:23

So, picture the scene...

Mr H says he'll make supper yesterday because I was in and out and rather busy. Great. Until he proudly produces... SLOW COOKED BELLY PORK. 😂Literally the least fast day compliant dish he could have found.

It gets worse I resign myself to FD fail. enjoy the belly pork and then have a gin or two in the evening sunshine having got back from my meeting.

1/2 a kilo down this morning. WTAF. Makes a mockery of the days I struggle through on 500 cals!! 😆

Mmm, pork belly tho… I need to try that in the air fryer to get the crispy skin.

FD today (children have helpfully come back from school with packets of crisps Hmm). Banana for lunch and possibly leftover one pot bolognaise for dinner. Monday’s FD wasn’t especially strict and I haven’t been tracking the last couple of days so need to make this count!

EndlessGuineaPigCycle · 20/06/2024 16:49

I hope everyone's day is going well. I managed my FD yesterday so feeling pleased, and have been refuelling today. I'm considering whether to do another FD tomorrow and make it a 4:3 week...has anyone else on here tried 4:3?

Whatapickle78 · 20/06/2024 20:15

Closing my second FD on just under 700….

argh! Why is it so difficult to get to 500!

Today the ‘overspend’ was probably the glass of smoothie my husband presented me with this morning, plus the protein ball ‘snacks’ I shared with my daughter after school.

Is it easier and as effective to do the 800 version of this? Do you still eat normally on NFDs or do you calorie count then too?

Have to say though, black coffee and lemon water DID actually help today

SydneyCarton · 20/06/2024 21:15

Kitchen closed on 799, give or take the odd gummy bear 🐻

@Whatapickle78 I am aiming for 800 on fast days as I found 500 too hard to stick to. I know the “new 5:2”, the Fast 800, has 800 calories for the two fast days so I assume it works for ongoing weight loss. I don’t mind if results are a little slower.

OohMrDarcy · 21/06/2024 07:17

Morning all

Checking in for my Friday FD today... Doing a chicken and mushroom pie for the kids tonight so I'm just working out if I can have the filling minus the pastry for my dinner... Fingers crossed as it is delicious

EndlessGuineaPigCycle · 21/06/2024 07:40

Morning everyone, I've decided to do another FD today (I've done Mon and Wed this week). I'm not sure how good an idea it is as I'm having to travel into the office on the train and won't be able to have dinner until fairly late. It's kind of bringing forward next Monday's FD as I have plans for then which mean I definitely won't be fasting! I am a little concerned that I'm making the mistake I often make which is to go in guns a blazing, then crash and burn after only a short time, time will tell! At the moment, what's keeping me motivated is that I am doing a work presentation next week in front of a lot of people, and I want to feel my best. After that, my motivation will be my holiday in August.

Anyway, I'm currently clutching a black coffee on the train, I'll have a protein yoghurt, watermelon and almonds as a late lunch, and an omelette for dinner. I'll be missing my bottle of sugar free lemon squash today though!

Hope you all have a good day

Absolute FD fail last night having been tempted by beers in the evening sun... Hopeless!

Back on Monday and Wednesday next week and will hope that I have rediscovered my willpower then 😂

Hello! I m friday fasting as well . had a 225 cal breakfast with 2 eggs and rye bread with lot of lettuce and few cherry tomatoes.

Attempting yoga again in the evening., as it went well last friday,

Good luck friday fasters! lets do this!

@EndlessGuineaPigCycle I would give 5:2 a try for a few weeks before upgrading to 5:3 :-D as I m prone to guns blazing -> crash and burn syndrome as well. but if you are not too hungry and feeling upto it, go for it. Cashing in on all the enthuciasm at the begining ang going all in for a few weeks and then reininging in a bit is also a good strategy but keep looking out for the burn and pull back before that.

strangerInStrangeLand · 21/06/2024 11:07

I m wondering if I have any kidney issues, condidering I woke up with tripple eyelids and super puffy face and my weight also goes up 3 kilos in a few days ever so often...
have a test monday. good luck to me!! fingers crossed.

anxiousaboutlettinggo · 21/06/2024 11:45

Hi all

Would love to start this WoL and was wondering how many of you, if any, use protein shakes as meal replacements?

I have issues with food aversions / textured etc and have very little protein in my diet. I've found that having a protein shake is useful.

EndlessGuineaPigCycle · 21/06/2024 12:34

@strangerInStrangeLand that's very good advice, thanks. I am feeling the enthusiasm at the moment so as you say, it would be good to 'cash in' on it. But definitely need to make sure I don't push myself too far and then immediately undo my good work!

strangerInStrangeLand · 21/06/2024 12:37

Im bored today, tempted by a lot of things to eat, need more will power than usual to keep fasting.
Hunger is not as much a problem as boredom for eating. Grrr.
Time to drink that hazelnut flavour coffee and see if it cheers me up

strangerInStrangeLand · 21/06/2024 13:02

@harriethoyle Ohh I m here for change of thread event, how interesting, I think I came in about page 25/26 tho. :-) I hope to last a whole of next thread. That will be an achievement - grand entry into 5:2 WOL.

EndlessGuineaPigCycle · 21/06/2024 13:06

Hi @anxiousaboutlettinggo , I don't use protein shakes but I do have protein yoghurts quite often as a replacement meal together with some fruit usually

Stowickthevast · 21/06/2024 16:03

Place-marking. I think I want to give this a try.

I've been low carbing but am finding it hard to maintain alongside a social life and there's a lot of things that I can't imagine giving up for ever - fruit especially!!

I've just ordered in some nutriseed soups and juices to get me through the first couple of fast days without thinking too carefully but would love to join you for real meal ideas.

strangerInStrangeLand · 21/06/2024 17:25

555 cal so far, I think I will close kitchen close except for coffee mate coffee at 25 calories.
really using my will power today - too many temptations.

OohMrDarcy · 21/06/2024 19:46

Kitchen closed on 600 today.

Nearly went horribly wrong as we were out shopping late and ended up getting the kids a McDonald's.... I just had 3 chicken selects which was more than enough for me so proud for not abandoning it completely!

strangerInStrangeLand · 21/06/2024 21:08

Well done @OohMrDarcy I had a similar day . kitchen closed at 600 as well! just had a spoon of creme after yoga. now off to bed.
Really proud of myself for not taking biryani, biscuits, jsut another cup of coffee, crisps, rice or another slice of bread etc etc etc. Not hungry today but temptations popping into mind.

I hope this is some kind of life lesson with some mental muscles building ;-)
