Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

Morning all, sorry for radio silence. I've been off the wagon for the last month or so due to a combo of cancelled holiday and insane work. Back on it today. Hope everyone is well!

OohMrDarcy · 17/06/2024 10:11

Morning all

checking in for Monday FD - have chicken caesar salad for dinner and just sitting working out lunch plan / cals now

Weigh in this week is at 102.3kg giving me a loss of 0.9kg this week
Little stats update below for those interested (two phases - started back 16:8 last summer, and 5:2 in Feb)
Total loss 12.5 kg / 19.9 kg total
BMI gone from 44.9 (last summer) to 42.2kg and now 37.6 which is still a long way to go but a MASSIVE improvement

also dropped 2 dress sizes in that time which feels great!

harriethoyle · 17/06/2024 10:30

Well done @OohMrDarcy that's a great achievement - onwards and downwards!!

Did IF on Saturday but no other restricting over the weekend. FD today - banana for lunch and a sensible dinner of whatever needs eating in the fridge, possibly pizza and salad.

That is a great achievement @OohMrDarcy , well done. I haven't weighed myself for ages but I'm feeling a bit firmer and less muffin-toppy around the waist and less jiggly around the bum!

strangerInStrangeLand · 17/06/2024 11:52

@OohMrDarcy your results are so inspiring!!! awesome!

Good luck all the fasters!! Atleast its a nice and sunny day. Atleast here in london! so easier to fast and distract myself.

harriethoyle · 17/06/2024 11:57

It's miserable in Yorkshire @strangerInStrangeLand - grey skies and intermittent rain...

@harriethoyle whole of last week was like that here! Grrr. Summer??! Hello? Where are you!? 😂 No sign of summer this year.

Castlerigg · 17/06/2024 13:13

Well done @OohMrDarcy.

Back to eating properly after a weekend of snacks and junk. Actually I did have proper dinners, Thai green curry on Saturday, and I made an epic lasagne yesterday. But hardly low calorie!

EndlessGuineaPigCycle · 17/06/2024 13:33

Hi 👋 Can I join you please?
I have decided to give 5:2 a try and am doing my first fast day today. I've got fed up with trying (and failing!) to stick to 1200-1400 calories every day and think this may work better for me. I'm still planning on calorie counting on NFDs, aiming to stick to around 1800-2000 calories and allowing myself some chocolate and crisps! I am 175cm, currently 78kg, and would love to eventually reach 67kg, I managed 73kg approx 18 months ago and that felt great, so that is my first goal.

harriethoyle · 17/06/2024 14:00

Welcome @EndlessGuineaPigCycle the more the merrier. Jump straight in and feel free to ask any questions you like, someone will know the answer!

EndlessGuineaPigCycle · 17/06/2024 17:40

Thanks @harriethoyle 😊
Today has gone well so far. I had a protein yoghurt and blueberries at around 1pm (a couple of decaf coffees and sugar free lemon squash got me through until then!), then a lentil shepherds pie with crispy kale at around 5pm. I don't feel too hungry, just got to get through the evening now.

Does anyone have an tips for NFDs for a newbie? I'm giving myself a 2000 allowance and still tracking them. I'm going to allow myself some chocolate and the like.

OohMrDarcy · 17/06/2024 21:22

Kitchen closed on 504 tonight.

Have a family birthday tomorrow so planning ahead to try and be sensible - fingers crossed I survive!

Welcome @EndlessGuineaPigCycle re NFDs I recommend you use a TDEE calculator (Google it) and aim for whatever cals that says, that will be the amount of cals your body needs to 'stay the same weight ' the idea being the FDs are where you lose weight, and trying to stay the same the rest of the time makes it sustainable. Other main tip is that I always do better if I eat what I want but try not to overdo the carbs or booze the night before FD.

strangerInStrangeLand · 18/06/2024 07:56

@EndlessGuineaPigCycle Welcome!! I have been here 10 weeks now :-) It really helps me fast being in a group.
@OohMrDarcy Well done!!
My fast went well. Weight 68.3. loss of 1 kg, Finally back to my lowest weight as seen on May 22.
Hope to see new lows next 2 weeks before the PMS and period again bring it back up.

OohMrDarcy · 18/06/2024 08:00

Congratulations @strangerInStrangeLand !

strangerInStrangeLand · 18/06/2024 08:48

I re-calculated by TDEE by adding workout .
if I add moderate workout it goes up to 2000 from 1600ish. huge difference.
PPl who workout, do u add light or moderate workout to TDEE?

My day job is sitting one. I started working out 5 days a week with walks on the other days 6-7k steps on an average.

I have started working out since a few weeks and It does make me really reall hungry, so makes sense to up TDEE I think.

harriethoyle · 18/06/2024 09:53

Morning all, I have resisted the call of a pastry on the way to work remining myself of the benefits of IF on a NFD... Cous cous for lunch and lasagne for tea, before a FD tomorrow.

Going to have to work the cous cous in to the FD somehow because there's loads left and I don't think it will freeze so I am slightly concerned I will be over my usual calories, it's really difficult to estimate how calorific it is!

Hi everyone - I’m new to this thread and I’m starting the 5:2 diet for the first time today!

I have never dieted before, but going on the coil has made me suddenly gain weight (plus in midst of perimenopause) so I’m aiming to lose a stone.

I am finding it pretty tough so far, I think because I’m not so busy today as I usually am with work… and I’m at home all day!

I’ve had a yogurt for breakfast with a tea and coffee (with milk)

egg and salad for lunch

So far, I’m really missing my oat milk lattes!

EndlessGuineaPigCycle · 18/06/2024 17:56

Thanks @strangerInStrangeLand and @OohMrDarcy. I calculated my TDEE and it seems to be about 2000 calories per day. I'm quickly getting through those today after my first FD yesterday!

Welcome @Whatapickle78 👋, I only joined yesterday and am also doing 5:2. Yesterday's first FD felt quite tough towards the end, but I managed to get through it. Good luck with yours!

Whatapickle78 · 18/06/2024 18:33

Thanks @EndlessGuineaPigCycle and well done to you!

somehow I’ve ended today on 700 calories instead of the intended 500….

but at least I finished it!

will try a bit harder on Thursday.

Castlerigg · 19/06/2024 06:52

Right, I'm aiming for 500 calories today. I had a good dinner last night so no excuses.

I was going to attempt a FD yesterday, but had a crappy dinner the night before and woke up ravenous, so that wasn't happening.

OohMrDarcy · 19/06/2024 09:10

morning all

good luck to those fasting today - remember to glug that water!

NFD here, enjoyed a sensible family birthday yesterday.

berryhand · 19/06/2024 10:05

Morning all, on a FD today, planning a b2b with harissa chicken for dinner today and a beef and lentil ragu thing tomorrow. @OohMrDarcy you're doing amazingly!!

Welcome to all new fasters too.

strangerInStrangeLand · 19/06/2024 10:07

Welcome @Whatapickle78 . Well done completing the first fast successfully!! 700 is great!! It gets somewhat easier as you do more fasts.
Lot of water - I keep sipping hot water boiled with fennel/ajwain/corriander seeds/ ginger . It is great at preventing hunger for me. Also black coffee - hunger killer but not great for acidity.

Good luck todays fasters!

EndlessGuineaPigCycle · 19/06/2024 10:15

Well done @Whatapickle78 👏
I was planning a FD tomorrow but decided to change it to today as I'm out at various appointments all day so think it will be easier to do than when I'm wfh tomorrow.
I will have pretty much exactly what I had on Monday, as it seemed to work, protein yoghurt with blackberries at about 2pm, and Lentil Shepherdess pie ready meal with crispy kale at around 5pm (or later if I can wait!)
Good luck to all other fasters today!

harriethoyle · 19/06/2024 12:28

welcome @Whatapickle78

I'm joining you @EndlessGuineaPigCycle @berryhand @Castlerigg - today and tomorrow FD for me. Feeling hungry but trying to push on til 1 before having lunch...
