Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

I'm fasting today, who's with me?

sweetgingercat · 18/01/2024 09:40

I am @JemimaFuddle I'm on it! We can do this! Anyone else?

JemimaFuddle · 18/01/2024 12:08

I have a busy week next week and it looks like I will have to do a back to back on Tuesday and Wednesday. Am I right in thinking that you can have 1300 over the 2 days, which could be 500/800 or 650 per day?

distrussful · 18/01/2024 12:10

Me too!

MikeHannigansStripyShirt · 18/01/2024 12:39

Me three!

sweetgingercat · 18/01/2024 13:55

Yes @JemimaFuddle you can do 500/800 or 650 per day or any combination of that. I usually eat a bit more on the second day, although if I do low carb I often find by the end of the second day I'm not really very hungry.

Yay @distrussful and @MikeHannigansStripyShirt we can all do it!

Tinydancer123 · 18/01/2024 14:42

Hi all , I am going to do B2B next week too. This week I did Monday 18:6 with 521 cals . A normal day with TDDE cals Tuesday. I am now on my second day of B2B I did 500 cals yest and I have my food for today which is 467 struggling but at school with parents evening and not much good food to grab..... other than chocolate..... trying to avoid.
How does the above sound ?

distrussful · 18/01/2024 17:31

On the way to the opera which has no intervals and doesn't finish until 10 (I'll be lucky to stay awake on a fast day!) so closed the kitchen on 580, just need to avoid the bar! Good luck everyone, almost there 🙏

JemimaFuddle · 18/01/2024 19:42

Fasting has been weirdly easy today. I didn't feel hungry until much before my dinner time and I feel oddly satisfied on the 300 odd cals I've had so far. This is not usual for me!

MikeHannigansStripyShirt · 18/01/2024 19:52

Well done today's fasters! Kitchen closed here on 531. Teeth brushed and just sipping water till bedtime now. My day was weirdly easy too @JemimaFuddle I hope next week is the same!

Tinydancer123 · 18/01/2024 20:40

I will join you

sweetgingercat · 18/01/2024 22:29

Nearly finished here, got about 250 cals left to eat and I also don't feel so hungry. That's good! @distrussful I hope it's going well at the opera and you have avoided those nice little ice creams they often have there. What are you seeing?

MikeHannigansStripyShirt · 19/01/2024 06:14

How was the opera @distrussful ? It sounds so glamorous!

berryhand · 19/01/2024 09:27

Morning everyone, think we are all having a good week! I'm fasting today, trying to last out till mid afternoon when I'm planning to have a couscous burrito bowl thing

JemimaFuddle · 19/01/2024 10:22

So weird how we all weren't hungry yesterday!

Another 1.6 pounds down this morning, taking my weight loss to 5 pounds. I am still obese mind you but only just now 😅

Well done for the loss I am 3 pounds down this week. It is a non fast today after a b2b and a long week teaching .

ilovebagpuss · 20/01/2024 10:58

Morning. I did not fast last week but I started doing the 16:8 and I jumped back on the treadmill every night. I am easing myself in.
16:8 led to less food being scoffed so that was a start.
Making a big veg curry today to portion up for in the week to have with some grains in those pouches but I will only have a couple of spoons of those.
Will also weigh in next week just for myself.

Sunshineofyourlove · 21/01/2024 09:26

@ilovebagpuss it's batch cooking for me today, too. I'm going to do a big chickpea dal and a couple of soups which I will divvy into calorie counted portions. The kids are happy to take them in flasks for lunch, too so it's a good use of time.

I've managed somewhere between 16:8 and 14:10 most days this week. One FD. I'll increase a bit this week, hoping it will be easier now the freezing conditions have thawed

Tinydancer123 · 21/01/2024 09:34

Do you fast everyday ?
Thank you for those who have replied and helped me at the start of this journey. This thread seems fairly established with great support for those who know each other. Is there a newbie thread ?

harriethoyle · 21/01/2024 12:23

Hello all - I'm back on home soil. Scales were terrifying this morning 🤣 so roast chicken and veg for lunch, no roasties or yorkshires, batch cooking a low fat chilli and FD tomorrow and Tuesday. We've got this!

ilovebagpuss · 21/01/2024 15:32

@Sunshineofyourlove the chickpea dhal sounds tasty, we are trying to eat more meat free meals so I need to up my beans and pulses knowledge!
@Tinydancer123 hi 👋I'm not sure if there is a newbie thread but I haven't been on here for years and it's great to have all those more experienced to offer advice. Most people tend to do 2 fast days a week but it does vary. Some do back to back fasting as it suits them is this what you prefer?
I used to do a Mon and Thursday but just finding my way again.

MikeHannigansStripyShirt · 22/01/2024 08:26

Signing in for a fast today. Anyone fasting with me?

distrussful · 22/01/2024 08:32

Hope everyone had lovely weekends...

Signing in for a fast! @MikeHannigansStripyShirt and @sweetgingercat it was lovely! Saw Elektra at the ROH. And we were just on time so there was no chance of being distracted by the bar there!

I was one more pound down last week so c 2.5kg to go now. Am going to do a B2B just in case anyone is fancying joining in?

harriethoyle · 22/01/2024 08:33

Yes @MikeHannigansStripyShirt I am! Chicken thin for lunch, spinach and ricotta canneloni for tea. C. 650 cals for the day and a B2B tomorrow.

harriethoyle · 22/01/2024 08:33
