Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 32 - We can eat it tomorrow: toffees, toffee sponge or even toffee sausages!

TurkeyAtYuleHoHo · 04/12/2013 09:32

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

eatriskier’s thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

I am changing by the second. Wanting to fast. Wanting to eat. Wanting to fast. etc etc etc confused]. And it is cold again.

MrsFlorrick · 16/12/2013 11:22

Right campers.

I think I have finally managed it. My profile should be up with frock photos.

Now photo is poor because the only full length mirror is in walk in wardrobe which has no natural light only hideous ceiling spots.
So you can't really see beautiful Maxmara dress or Jimmy Choos very well.

Also this isn't the dress I am wearing at Christmas. I will be rocking biker stylee leather trousers (All Saints) and Belstaff cashmere.

I took photo of this dress because this is the first time I have managed to get into it after having DC. It's a very small 12 (looks more a 10 when you compare). And it has been my ambition to wear this again.
A sort of ultimate NSV.

I need to get lighting sorted or somehow move a mirror so I can take a photo of the leather trews.

And apologies for quality. My first ever selfie Grin

TurkeyAtYuleHoHo · 16/12/2013 11:25

Toffee I am with you there!

I feel the need to fast. But just don't think I have it in me today.

Feel like I need to eat some healthy wholesome nourishing food as a wind down from weekend.

But I also want to get back on track asap!

Am having a mass wrap, cards, postage day today, but have so far spent a fair bit of time obsessing over food and posting on here Xmas Grin

Oh and as far as quiet on the thread over Christmas goes..... I will be here!

I will need to pop in at least once a day to keep me focused.

As has been said before, this woe/wol is about so much more than just losing fat and I need it!

So it may just be me and a few tumbleweeds rolling about. In fact I could probably do a fairly good job of keeping the thread moving by myself, based on current form!

I will grab all of the tumbleweeds, pile them up, then climb to top and stand up there waving a victory flag, waiting for company. If nothing else, will be a good work out, which I'll need, as no doubt my hoop will still be A.W.O.L!

If BigChoc struts in all buffed up, I'll wang one at her head and we can have a tumbleweed fight over the last segment of choc orange! Xmas Grin

MrsFlorrick · 16/12/2013 11:27

Turkey. Dig deep and impress us with your best Jillian Moves!
Never mind the hoop. You can pretend its there and you can make hooping moves. Wink

That was for your pic btw!

Although now it's all getting a bit animal with grunty posts and hip thrusting with imaginary hoop! Xmas Wink

Turkey GrinGrinGrin

You're very very funny.

Enjoy the thrusting....

FunnyFestiveTableRunner · 16/12/2013 12:25

Welcome Dino :) There are a few of us newbies so we're all in it together!

peplum your analysis was so true :o 'mixture of newbies and returners looking for punishment' lol

turkey Gluttonville has never looked so attractive... Today it has banners up and sparkly lights and it is calling me. Now get out of that car and at least walk there, damn you! Wink I will keep you company over Christmas so I don't abandon all restraint.

FD today. I am very hungry at the minute but trying not to eat until a good bit later. I got more of my Baxter's soup and also some roasting veg. Plan is to have the soup and veg at teatime, then more soup at bedtime if necessary. Let's see how it all goes.

Good luck all fasters, happy munching non-fasters!

EatriskierDrinkAndBeMerry · 16/12/2013 12:29

Haha turkey - ELR and I have always been separate, but I was EagleRiderDirk, and that was sometimes abbreviated to ERD. I have to admit posts with either used to confuse me as to who they were talking to initially!

MrsF and tip loving the frocks (and b&w of course, albeit not frocked).

Exercising early doors appears to have done something to me. I've just baked a cake. On an FD. Madness I tell you, madness.

FunnyFestiveTableRunner · 16/12/2013 12:38

I'm so hunnnnnnnnnnngry. Help!!!

eat I'm going to eat your cake. And then I'm going to eat you :o

FunnyFestiveTableRunner · 16/12/2013 12:39

(Hope last post wasn't inappropriate. I'm blaming my stomach doing the typing Confused )

Not2bObvious · 16/12/2013 12:56

On an FD here and struggling badlySad
I have soup which I don't want and I have the option of having a slice of bread to liven it up. I know I can eat tomorrow but it's still today, she wails like a demented banshee

FunnyFestiveTableRunner · 16/12/2013 13:03

Not could you have a hot drink? I am having a coffee and it's taking the edge off. Had the same wail about today Grin

BiscuitsAreMyDownfall · 16/12/2013 13:05

Im in a eat everything type of mood today. TBF though I am hungry I just dont know what I want to eat so that's making me feel I want everything.

Im not fasting properly until I start work in a couple of weeks, but I know that it doesn't mean I can just eat and eat and eat.

I think Im feeling a bit sorry for myself to be honest because Im not a skinny size 10/12 yet. I wish it were so easy. Its a big constant battle I have with myself as I am not allowing myself to eat everything I want to eat (which is usually biscuits, chocolate and other types of crap)

You know when you have a few drinks and one drink leads to another etc. You know you will feel terrible the next day, but you dont care and think you will just deal with it when it comes. Well Im finding eating a bit like that. I want to eat and eat and eat. I know I will only kick myself for it and will most likely feel bloated and horrible. It wont make me feel any better in the long run and I will put on weight, but part of me wants to go into that kitchen and just eat every bad thing I can find.

Why can't biscuits and cake help you lose weight?

EatriskierDrinkAndBeMerry · 16/12/2013 13:06

festive there's plenty of cake to go round. And its low calorie.

not2 I second the hot drink thing. Have hit my lunchtime hunger point. Am about to have a lovely flavoured coffee (and to DS's nappy, so that should put me off food again for a while Envy

BsshBossh · 16/12/2013 13:18

tiredmama congratulations and welcome back.
Biscuits congrats to you too (on the job).
Not2b I know I can eat tomorrow but it's still today made me laugh!
MrsF you look stunning.
Turkey I'll be on here throughout Xmas week. We'll be having a house full of guests all week (we always host Christmas for far-flung extended family as we're centrally located). I am a natural loner so will be making frequent retreats to my bedroom to nap, read, surf, think.

BiscuitsAreMyDownfall · 16/12/2013 13:19

I see Im not the only one having food issues today.

Ive found a pasta piing pot in the freezer so having that. Its 320 cals so will do me for now. And Ive chipped one of my favourite mugs while looking in the cupboard for something Sad

TalkinPeace · 16/12/2013 13:20

MrsFlorrick
that dress is lovely - and you look good in it.

everybody
you are not hungry you are cold and thirsty
go put the kettle on, have a pint of water while its boiling and then have a BIG cup of tea or bovril or coffee or something

I did my swim and yoga and bodypump this morning
now to finish sorting out crimble pressies

DinoSnores · 16/12/2013 13:40

Ok, so been fasting (except a couple of cups of tea) since 7pm last night. Reading through the hints and tips thread, I can completely see that if I ate something now, I would be then be hungry from then on! A lot of it could be the novelty of trying something new, but at the moment, this seems to be fairly manageable...

TheRealToffeesFestiveSausage · 16/12/2013 13:42

............struts in with ghetto blaster on shoulder blaring out...

Nelly - It's getting hot in here (so take off all your clothes)

.... Well, helloooooooooo ladies! Ding Dong! (lascivious wink)

A little birdie told me there were some pretty little things on here posing in their glam wear (except B&W who is rugged/manly obviously)...

and just like the B(&W)-man, and what with me being a lip lickingly, sizzling hot, burning staff of sausage - I can't resist a lovely bap or two!

You all look so divine. I was nearly tempted to let Santa Saus(age) come early, and empty my bulging Christmas sack on this thread as a treat for you all.

You've all been so good this year. It really is fit to burst with goodies for you.

You'll just have to wait though, you bunch of minxes, I want to see more first!

And don't worry, there is plenty to go round! Xmas Wink

Papayasoup · 16/12/2013 13:58

mrsF you look amazing! I remember just a few short months ago that you thought you'd never get back in your old clothes. All your hard work has paid off. Can't wait to see pic in leather trews.

BsshBossh · 16/12/2013 14:02

FestiveSausage (Turkey?) you are hilarious!!!
Dino yep, try not to eat anything as it may set your hunger off.

My FD is going well so far. I certainly helps that I overate a mince pie or four two yesterday. My body is surviving very nicely on yesterday's festive fuel. Rosehip tea, green tea, black coffee and lots of warm water only so far. Have been working all morning, went on a brisk heart-accelerating walk at "lunch time" and now am Mumsnetting working again. Will pick up DD in 1.5 hours then will be busy with her until her bedtime at 7pm. Then it'll only be a couple of hours until I can have my FD dinner (soup). Will report back at the end of the day (really must work now!).

Papayasoup · 16/12/2013 14:03

No fasting here today but rather reflective on the fact that as I embark on my 37th year I am close to 12k lighter and been on this WOL for nearly a year with periods of loss and maintenance over the year. But most importantly not real gains! Xmas Grin

Not sure when the next fast day will be, might not be for 3 weeks as we are off on holiday to sunnier climes soon but I'll try to be mindful and keep throwing in as many 16:8 as I can. But I'll definitely be back on the wagon come January!

Not2bObvious · 16/12/2013 14:50

Thanks to you all who made suggestions. Hot drinks are featuring heavily today and ain't cutting the mustard ( umm Ham sambo with mustard...drool) Added a yogurt to my lunch so I'm a little better now, although I'll be closer to 700 for the day but so be it. Just going to keep super busy, distraction will be my friend.
Papaya 12 kilo, roughly 2 stone? That is such an acheivement, should be no problem to keep on track over the next couple of weeks. Turkey is the you being all... Laviscious lol! Clutching pearls at thr neck of my high neck blouusee!

ELR · 16/12/2013 15:04

Well so far so good, I ve had a couple of teas and a soup (133cal)from Pret for lunch. Not really hungry just feeling a bit empty headed if that makes sense!
Think I will have cod baked in tomato sauce with capers and olives served with green beans for tea tonight.
Anyway off to do the school run, then need to pop to the supermarket so that should keep me busy for a few hours.
