Fasting / 5:2 diet

The 5:2 thread number 32 - We can eat it tomorrow: toffees, toffee sponge or even toffee sausages!

TurkeyAtYuleHoHo · 04/12/2013 09:32

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

eatriskier’s thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

About to go pick DD up, but wanted to quickly say that I'm finally in the "acceptable" body fat range according to the US military body fat calculator. I know it's not as accurate as the body pod/DEXA scan but... When I reached a normal BMI before Summer I was still in the obese range (at 33%). Now I'm 27% and just 3% away from fitness level. So it's likely I will shift my ultimate weight goal downwards from 125 lbs (perhaps after a maintaining break!).

ELR I think I know what you mean by empty headed. I am more mistake prone though today too Blush

Just got a marinaded chicken breast from the butcher for my dinner tonight, to have with my veg. Anyone know how many calories a chicken breast has? The marinade is spicy rather than fatty.

I really don't know how any of you do LO fasts. I can't wait for my dinner tonight Blush

Was going quite well there! Roast hazelnut flavour coffee, Bovril, miso soup, and then a lunch of hardboiled egg and tomatoes. And then a choc chip cookie just fell out of the biscuit tin into my hands!

Oh well, I shall plug it into MFP and see what room I've left for dinner. Though I'll be doing a training session for running this evening and I'm usually not that hungry afterwards, so maybe not a total write off.

NFD for me here, so I'm having a nicely relaxed day. Had raspberries and Greek Yogurt for breakfast, chicken soup for lunch and am having crackers and cheddar for a snack before we had or to buy a Christmas tree. I forgot to plan a meal for tonight so when we get back I'll see what is taking up space in the freezer and cook that.

Depending on how I feel tomorrow will either be a fast day or a going out for lunch day.

The hangover suits you turkey you dirty old bird sausage Xmas Grin

I succumbed to the lure of staffroom biscuits today my lunch was fairly substantial so I'll try for a light dinner but really this will be a 16:8 / mini fast rather than a proper one.

I'll try and be restrained, at times, over the festive season but I doubt I'll do a proper fast now, unless I feel really grotty. My danger zone isn't even Christmas, it's the bit after when my body/brain suddenly decides that yes, eating and drinking constantly all day is exactly what I should be doing. That shift usually happens after a few days of feasting.

I enjoy the proper feasting. The other bit I don't really, so that's where I need to be mindful and attempt not to nibble something out of the fridge every time I pass it.

I'm interested to see what happens after 11.5 months of 5:2!

Turkey I'll be on here from next Thursday, the day I arrive back to civilisation London after a few days with my family. Posting should help keep me on the straight and narrow - I've been known to be a demon in the Christmas/New Year gap for scoffing the heavily reduced seasonal goodies I'd bought at M&S and Waitrose Blush

Not quite maintaining just yet - my weight is hovering between 132 and 135, and I'd prefer it to hover somewhere round the 130 mark. But realistically over the new few weeks I'm happy to adopt a 6:1 approach, and I'll pick up the pace again in the new year.

Well!....

Missing hula hoop has finally turned up.

Question: how do I get the bloomin thing to stay up??

All I seem to be managing is to fling it to the side with great gusto, thrust enthusiastically forwards thinking about MrsF and if I'm being completely honest have a little atchoo uh oh moment!!

I have tmi tourettes! Sorry!

So how do I do this then girls eh??!

turkey don't worry about it, the first few times you'll spend most of your time picking it off the floor (and that is exercise in itself). Then it'll kick in, but you won't be able to keep it up for long periods, then you'll manage 10 minutes without realising it. Really does just oddly kick in. Though if you're right handed go anti-clockwise first (and visa versa obviously)

Oh good job Southeast!

Yes, checking in here, will definitely provide some kind of damage limitation. Not sure how much exactly, all I know is it will stop me drifting off into the land of no return a la Besty's concern.

And will also keep the bigger picture in focus. Am fed up of every year barely getting started with healthier living until it's too late to achieve anything in time for warmer weather. Which then means I spend summer in too much clothing because I hate getting any part of body out when am this/pre 5:2 size.

Not this time I tell you!! (shakes fist at fat)

Very swish and elegant, MrsF. Also I love the lethal pointy shoes, like Rosa Klebb (old James Bond baddie)

Funny
Noone here is very appropriate, especially not that illegal FestiveTurkeySausage that keeps exposing itself.

“....but it‘s still today “ lol !

Blimey, though, you two and Biscuits need to gnaw on something zero-cal before you scare the MN horses – still got any teething rings handy ?

Whatever you do, don't snack / graze / nibble; it makes you even more hungry.
If I feel peckish on FDs, I do sets of 20 pressups until it stops. Or go for a bike ride / run ?
Bring endorphins to the rescue with some sort of activity that doesn't involve a knife and fork.

Great ! Someone else on this thread who doesn‘t own a dress. I don‘t have a skirt or even non-sport shoes either. My wardrobe contents:
About 20 pairs of jeans , 40 T-shirts and sweatshirts, 30 pairs of Nike trainers.
For gym about 50 pairs of tights & shorts, 40 singlets.

I don‘t do elegance !

I have just broken NND (NFD today), because I was given 3 Advent calendars and I‘ve emptied one already. I think it‘s supposed to be one day at a time ?
Hmm
Seems I do gluttony pretty well !

Think might have to do this during school hours from now on! Between the lecturing and the fact that she just pretty much took out the Christmas tree with it Xmas Grin baubles flying everywhere and chocs raining down on a very happy, greedy pooch!

Going for zero cal fast today. Find it shrinks my appetite for a good few days after. Also easier not to worry about food and on top of that I've only got one jacket potato in the house for DH's dinner tonight anyway plus left over roast enough for one not two, so I don't even need to worry about proper cooking. I will eat again around 10ish tomorrow morning. Just keep drinking lots of warm drinks tonight.

Today I've been so busy that I've not even had time to think about food and I've not had any hunger pangs either.

MrsF you look fab in your party dress.

Biscuits welcome back and congratualtions on the new job. I'm the opposite of you in that I find it easier to fast at home than I would have in an office. My old job I used to get so bored that I was driven to eat lots of naughty food and despite cycling over an hour a day whilst commuting I was still gaining weight.

Hello to all the other delurkers and returners and old timers Xmas Wink

I think my motivation has been so much better on 5:2 since I started posting on this thread. Not that I'm as entertaining as Turkey or BCF or as knowledgeable as the likes of TIP Betsy and Postman but its good to get some of my feelings off my chest as I don't make a big thing about it at home, just quietly getting on with it.

turkey is it really big? stop thinking about mrsf you perv.

Ive broken out the laptop and found a whole page I missed on my phone including pics of the very dangerous bigchoc, looking tiny and innocent one minute, then hauling some hunk basher the next. woah.

mrsf jel, no one else gets the festive sausage aroused. Envy

Havent had my dinner yet but dh bought some ferraro rochies home as some sort of pre mating ritual romantic gesture. oh let me tell you about my bird! I went out with the dog, long muddy walk, just near home and the dog sniffed something then looked shocked as it moved. It was a poor little great tit, all wet and shivering, a bit mauled I think. I figured it would die, but brought it home in my scarf and put it in the spare room. An hour later, it was completely transformed, all fluffy and perky, had helped itself to some seeds left for it and flew off when I opened the window. Smile. The cat was disgusted.

Plus, I like to fiddle about the house or just sit around watching escape to the country.
