Fasting / 5:2 diet

The 5:2 thread number 32 - We can eat it tomorrow: toffees, toffee sponge or even toffee sausages!

TurkeyAtYuleHoHo · 04/12/2013 09:32

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

eatriskier’s thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Toffee I have never seen anyone else name checked on the thread titles before! You are not just accepted here but you are one of us and you will never be allowed to leave mwah ha ha ha

Tip Hmm, I like the xmas frock photo idea, good idea. And an excuse to try on frocks I think! eat yes, post-party may not be so attractive Xmas Grin

devoncreamtea Well done on getting going with the fasting. When I started out fasting I vaguely remember feeling odd the day after a fast and soon learned to be careful about what I ate on those days - even now I find I have to be moderate with carbs post-fast. However, your body does adjust and get used to it within a few weeks. Pay attention to what your body is telling you and try and respond appropriately. Weight loss-wise some people lose loads quickly and then slow down, some lose slowly but steadily. A few don't lose at all. Almost no one has a steady downward curve - weight bounces up and down but the general trend is down - it's best not to weigh too frequently. Do take measurements though!

Evening.

I am being a crap parent and letting the DC watch cartoons on my iPad (aka "mummypad" in this house). H is away again and DS is getting up in the night several times again. And yes DD has started sleepwalking. Oh joy the minute minutes of broken sleep I am getting!

At least DD seems to sleep walk straight into our room and creep into bed next to me Grin small mercies.

NFD here. Am at TDEE (I have mine set at my goal weight and no exercise). But am planning to stick DC in bed and get Jillian Michaels out and be very very bad and have a glass of wine after. Oh yes I know how to live!!

I may even skip Xmas card writing and present wrapping for the night....

DC have excelled at naughtiness today. From the moment they rose this am until 10mins ago when "mummypad" made an appearance. Hmm

I am hoping the rest of you feel less knackered than I do!

Coming to the end of what I thought was going to be a mini fast but ended up being a 19:5 FD - a new invention created in times of extreme busy'ness. Finished the day at 570!!! Happy out.
Dotty that was me who said wine but not wine and chocolate! I'm glad you like the idea and it can help your self sabotaging tendencies, it's a constant battle for me I must say. But 5:2 is really helping with that. Tried on my skinny size 12 jeans for my work night out and they look good enoughGrin Definately going to try keep up with this thread, need the encouragement over the next 3-4 weeks to be swath, that wily be a first!

MrsF - sounds perfect parenting. Out sourcing when you need help Wink.

I am fasting tomorrow to see if that helps me lose more weight than a Mon and Wed fast.

Rotten tummy ache. Major ov-ind - never noticed it once pre having had all my children. Feel like I need a wee but can't go. Thank goodness I have a Thursday coming tomorrow which is my favourite day of the week.

I really fancy trying a 36 hour LOF tomorrow. I used to do them before Summer but haven't since. I feel like a proper fasting deep cleanse. Is anyone else up for it too?

Report
TheLeastAccomplishedBennetGirl · 04/12/2013 20:24

After the supper I've just finished, I'm up for 36hrs with you Bssh

Talk me through it?

Report
ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 04/12/2013 20:31

Me too [eek].

Fasting tomorrow anyway so could start from now?

I only ever drink water and lemonade with the odd coke so what will I do?

Report
BsshBossh · 04/12/2013 20:43

I used to just subsist on water, black coffee and herb tea on my 36 hour LOFs so I think I'll do the same. If I can't make it through then I have miso, cuppa soup or a light omelette meal planned at the 24 hour mark.

I know I can physically go "zero calorie" for 36 hours, so for me tomorrow's FD will be literally a mental challenge.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 04/12/2013 20:48

I now can't eat until 8.30am Friday. Just told DH, he said I will faint. I think he is not happy about doing it in a worried about me way. I am wondering if I am aiming too high too quickly as I haven't even done a 24 hour fast before.

Report
TheLeastAccomplishedBennetGirl · 04/12/2013 20:50

I can manage 24hrs on zero cals but break my fast with a 100cals soup for supper, I've done that my last 3 FDs

I'm in on the 36hrs stint.

So, just finishing a glass of wine, so that will mean zero cals until Friday morning, at about 9am, is that correct?

Report
Talkinpeace · 04/12/2013 20:52

I admit, I'm a white tea person so I never do zero calories, but no food for 24 - 30 hours is easy now
how scary is that!

We need a sausage smiley!

Well, FD yesterday ended up being a 22:2 with dominos pizza. Oh well, DH had just got back from being away overnight and we felt like it. Plus it was 2 for 1 Tuesday Grin. And I low carbed (left the crusts).

Mince pie and cinnamon roll for breakfast, sandwich lunch and then a hog roast roll, assorted cake and sweets plus mulled cider at the Christmas fete. Going out for dinner tomorrow night so I'll just take it easy tomorrow until then. I can see December is going to be hard so I'll just try to be sensible about it.

LIGHTBULB QUOTE

I can see December is going to be hard so I'll just try to be sensible about it.

there is no "falling off the wagon".
There is no "failing"
There is only being "sensible"
and knowing that in January the fasts get stricter

that is why this WOE will do everybody some good, even those who do not lose much weight, or have little more to lose

dingdongduckyfuzz · 04/12/2013 21:07

TIP you are, as ever, absolutely right Xmas Grin even though I've messed up today I don't mind because I can put it right tomorrow, the day after, next week... December will be tough but not impossible and not the end of the road

Thanks for the advice Bssh and Jingly, I don't eat grains anyhow so difficult to over carb but best avoid sugar..well I say avoid...be aware of might be more do-able! Liquid fast seems out of my league for now, is that mainly health benefit? Wish I had your willpower Bssh - I am stubborn, but can talk myself in/out of everything, so it backfires...

Report
BsshBossh · 04/12/2013 21:33

Yep devon for me a 36 hour LOF is all about optimising the health benefits.

Well, we've not finished our dinner yet (Hotel Chocolat mince pie chocolates given to DH by his trainee still to be consumed) so I won't be breaking my fast (I hope) until 10am Friday morning.

Bring it on!

I've felt very 'cleansed' after a LOF, Strangely light and empty, it really seems to reset my appetite. Now whether that's a true physical reading, or purely psychosomatic, it works for me.

36 hours just on water, is it really doable and sensible?

Report
BsshBossh · 04/12/2013 22:05

It's doable and sensible for me as I've done it several times with no ill effect. It's just an extra 12 hours extra to what I've been doing since Feb this year and 7 of those hours I'll be sleeping :)
