Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 32 - We can eat it tomorrow: toffees, toffee sponge or even toffee sausages!

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

eatriskier’s thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Has my curry and jacket pot but just now had eight squares of fruit and nut cadburies,
Planning a 16:8 tomorrow but am working.
I don't have much in and can't be asked to make a lunch for my self so may just take a banana and a yoghurt or a tin of soup hmm :/...

ChristmasPudding6 · 15/12/2013 18:54

Didn't eat all day until my roast pork dinner about 5 ish and gorged on crackling guilt free followed by mince pies warmed in the microwave and served with extra thick double cream. A meal always tastes so much better when you save your appetite.

Great picture earslaps. Lovely dress. I must take one of myself soon. Not sure I have a 'before' photo though. I know I have one post pregnancy which is three years old now, but must see if I've got one from last Easter before I began 5:2. I prob only have one of me hidden undertaken bulky ski clothes.

Emmabryant123 · 15/12/2013 18:55

Or I could take a bowl. A sachet of porridge and buy some milk in the morning hmm... Choices. And have porridge for lunch.

BigChocFrenzyAteYourReindeer · 15/12/2013 19:00

Wowza, Earslaps you look great !
Flowers
Watch out for that RealCrazySausage, though.

Tip Thanks for info about uploading fotos. I kept losing some of mine, too.

Emmabryant123 · 15/12/2013 19:10

I've changed my mind am taking a plastic bowl, sachet of porridge, a banana and a buying a carton of milk and having porridge about 10 tomorrow with banana. Yummy. Then dinner about 5 as finishing early yay so a nice 16:8 tomorrow :)

TalkinPeace · 15/12/2013 19:38

Bigchoc
you's looking hench ... now for the party dress version ....

and the rest of you Wink

EarSlaps · 15/12/2013 19:56

I've tried all combinations of trying to upload and it still just overwrites them. Doing it from my phone though, so maybe it would be better on the computer. I'll give it another try though.

I love the dress, and it was even better at 20% off Grin. I never would have dared wear anything like it pre 5:2, far too short and too much arm on show! I love the flared skirt as it gives me curves.

I must try and find a before 5:2 picture. I'll have to look through the holiday snaps. And I think there might be some of me at my heaviest somewhere, 2 stone bigger than now. I'm henna-ing my hair at the moment and put on some old jeans, they are huge!

EarSlaps · 15/12/2013 20:00

Yep, still won't load it up.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 15/12/2013 20:01

I am hating myself. Have just eaten most of a 200g bar of fruit and nut. Feel emotional. Really really shouted at the kids. All disappeared (I told them to go at 7pm) and none have reappeared other than DS1 just now who is acting normally other than asking me to pay cards.

TalkinPeace · 15/12/2013 20:07

ah yes, to upload pics I always tfr from phone to puter and then upload
but then my phone is a crock!

Toffeesausage
do not feel shit
feel that you are growing a backbone and your kids are learning that Mums boundaries are not to be crossed
a development that will utterly stand you in good stead when they are taller than you ...
your word has to be the law from now on and until they stop eying up your wallet Wink

MrsFlorrick · 15/12/2013 20:12

Bigchoc!! Wow. You body is amazing!! I want your abs. Once the DC are older and my 2 yo starts school, I'm going to start crossfit and lifting too. You're inspirational in a big way.

Earslaps. Beautiful dress. You look beautiful and very slim. Thanks

Welcome back to Biscuitsaremydownfall. Grin Great to "see" you again.

Tiredmama. Congratulations!! And only 1st 8 to lose after having a baby. Now that is amazing! Enjoy your snuggly squishy baby. Thanks

Fast day here finished at 443. I'm impressed. I usually can only manage a mini fast on a Sunday.

I will upload some photos but I am
Having technical problems. Not just with the MN website but actually taking the photosBlush. Don't ask.

I don't have a massive amount of photos of me fat. Not sure I am brave enough to share.

Anyway. Fingers crossed that I work it out while DD is at school tomorrow and DS is at preschool. They have their school Xmas party tomorrow. Both so excited. Very sweet.

BetsyJingleBells · 15/12/2013 20:19

You look GORGEOUS in that dress earslaps - slim, shapely and elegant :)

BiscuitsAreMyDownfall · 15/12/2013 20:21

I will take a photo on New Years Day and compare it to myself later on in the year (maybe every other month or so)

The photos are really inspirational

FunnyFestiveTableRunner · 15/12/2013 20:21

Evening all. Had a later dinner than planned - grr - but I am trying to tell myself that the kitchen is now closed. I set tomorrow as a fast day and really, desperately going to try and stick to it.

Is there a way of showing a before photo to just the people on here, rather than the whole of MN?

Toffee have a Brew and some Thanks. I totally get the 'I feel miserable so I must eat my own bodyweight in chocolate' thing. After DC screeching all evening I found myself almost hyperventilating and longing to stuff biscuits down my throat. Going to make a nice cup of coffee instead. It is hard this parenting lark :(

I remember you from lurking on an older thread :)

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 15/12/2013 20:25

Thanks TIP.

Played a few games with DS1 then DD appeared. She was Confused as to why DH was ignoring her. I asked him and he said he was busy but I suspect he was annoyed with her. After a few minutes I reminded them I had sent them upstairs so "off you go." DS1 said good night and they both went. I do think they knew I was cross but I still feel crap I shouted. DH has finished the chocolate thankfully. Tomorrow I must fast but I have a feeling it will be hard. Plus Tuesday is going to be so difficult I am not sure what to do to be honest.

Main problem wrt the kids.

DS2 thinks DD hates him. Just wants her to play with him.
DS2 wants to be the same as DS1.
DD can't be bothered with DS2 and doesn't see why she should play with him.
DD will lend DS1 her books but not DS2.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 15/12/2013 20:30

FUnnyFestive It really is. DS1 here again doing magic tricks. What I don't get is when you shout at the them and they just appear as if you haven't. How can they carry on as normal when you have just yelled at them. I guess I shout too much. I feel a non person with my children.

Love the dress Earslaps, very nice and nicer still @20% off, I loves a bargain meXmas Grin Well I caved and went shopping BUT I took in a 4.5 mile walk in under 1.5 hours to do so, so as far as I concerned it's all good. Picked up a dressy jacket for reasonable and my last Christmas gift so a worthwhile trip. Before heading to my food centric family party, I managed to do a 16 hour fast and broke it with sub 200. And while I did drink at the do, I managed to keep choc/crisps nibbles to the bare minimum. One helping of food and just enough dessert to enjoy, not enough to gorge. All in all, I reckon I ate like a skinny'ish girl on a binge. Which is a vast improvement on reformed binger let out on day order, which is my normal guise (I'd like to say digitise but that would infer I'm not a binger/greedy slug and that would be a big fat lie)
Still feel vile though, gut aching. Arg, would love some Andrews liver salts/alka seltzer type tummy thing. Failing that a couple of rennie and early bed, no food til lunch tomorrow me thinks

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 15/12/2013 20:46

TIP I get what you meant now Blush

Breadandwine · 15/12/2013 21:08

Have to agree with all the comments on the pics so far - they are amazing! And show how far you all have come!

I'm going to spoil the party somewhat, since I'm not going to be wearing a suit - that's for weddings and funerals - so I'm more smart casual, hopefully.

(And as for a tux, Tip; just shows what a different world you live in to us plebs! Grin)

Anyway, see what you think!

Now going to read back on the thread and see what I've missed.

Wow, Toffee, you've had to put up with some serious shit! But what comes across from your posts is that you're a survivor! And given your approach to life, you'll get there! You'll maintain control of your kids - and you'll control your weight! And therefore your life!

200g of chocolate? Pah! Nothing at all! What's 1000 calories these days, now we know all about 5:2?

Just seen that dress of yours, Tip. Reminds me of when I was a toy boy, 50 years ago! Drifts off into a dreamy reverie…

BetsyJingleBells · 15/12/2013 21:31

Looking very dapper B&W :)

TalkinPeace · 15/12/2013 21:38

Party on !

BsshBossh · 15/12/2013 21:59

Wow, everyone is looking very glamourous :-) All my Christmas/New Year parties this year are family/friend affairs and very very casual (not even smart casual!). The big glamourous black tie event at DH's work was missed by us this year cause DH was out of the country. I work for myself so it'd be party of one chez Bssh's work do Grin. I do have some very lovely posh frocks from yesteryear but they're all size 16+.

ELR · 15/12/2013 22:24

Hi all, been in denial for last few months but it's time to take action!! DH and I decided to try for dc no3 back in August so I have been using that as an excuse to not fast, but due to some health issues we have decided to put that on hold for a while, so I really have no excuses now.
SW in feb was 10st12
CW 10st6
Lowest weight 9st12 but maintained around 10st for 3 months and then I've been hovering around 10st5/6 for last 6 weeks. Really annoyed with myself that I've let the weight creep back on especially as DH has maintained his 20lb loss!
Also the other thing is I've not been able to exercise for the last 3 months which def helps to keep my weight in check.
Anyway onwards and upwards. I'm going to fast twice this week as going away for Christmas and really don't want to start 2014 the same weight I started 2013!
