Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 32 - We can eat it tomorrow: toffees, toffee sponge or even toffee sausages!

TurkeyAtYuleHoHo · 04/12/2013 09:32

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

eatriskier’s thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Welcome back ELR :)

ELR · 15/12/2013 22:43

Thanks Bssh I've allowed the Christmas and conception threads take up all my mumsnet time, but no more its gonna be 5:2 all the time from now on!

FunnyFestiveTableRunner · 15/12/2013 22:54

Don't anyone do what I did and read the thread in chat about ideal Boxing Day buffet. I swear my stomach is grumbling now just thinking about it all.

peplum41 · 16/12/2013 00:09

Good to see you back elr. Be interested to know what its like to get back in the saddle after a break.

BigChocFrenzyAteYourReindeer · 16/12/2013 00:28

ToffeeChoc 200g choc or 300g cheese fondue is my weekend snack dessert. We all have moments of choc weakness when life bites us in the bum.

Xmas Smile
peplum41 · 16/12/2013 00:28

Ah biscuits ofcourse we remember you and your miserable job! Really hope new one works out, and LOVE that different TDEE for a different kind of day idea. I'm usually lightly active, except when I'm working, or sleeping between shifts when I'm definitely sedentary. A revelation that is. Will work out my new plan.

tip too fat to photo. People would shrug and say is that best she can do? Also have crap old fashioned kitchen with damp cupboards. Nothing to see here folks.

peplum41 · 16/12/2013 07:03

Aah! Been checking all night and nothing. Where are you all, its Monday morning.

I predict the next thread will chug along nicely for the next week, tumbleweeds for the season of non fasting and plenty feasting, before bursting into a fit of new year newbies full of questions and old hands returning for more punishment.

BetsyJingleBells · 16/12/2013 07:21

Morning peplum - we've lost our antipodean contingent so not much happening overnight these days! I agree, the threads will plod along sedately over the festivities and burst back into life as the January guilt fest starts!

I will fast today as I have a busy day to distract me. I also have all the delights of a cold which will no doubt affect my appetite one way or the other, though my sore throat will not enjoy sugar so will have no problem keeping away from the naughty stuff.

Waves to ELR - we'll get you back into the swing of things...

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 16/12/2013 07:32

Morning all Smile

Just had to referee three cat fights, make two packed lunches and fold up some washing. I have refused to iron DD's PE top as I told her not to leave it in her bag all weekend. DH has done it. NSV for parenting as far as I am concerned.

Fasting today. Plan to walk to the shop. Will take an hour. Gets me out of the house and I feel I need that emotionally today, an hour where I can't eat and won't think about it and then I am going to do my nails so I can't eat then either.

DinoSnores · 16/12/2013 07:44

Hi, can I join in? I've been thinking about doing this for a long time. I've worked in this field and am pretty convinced about the science behind it, but I've been reluctant to start while DD was BFing so much. She's 10mo now so thought it was time to try!

I wonder if I did my own version of this when I was a junior doctor. Some days were so busy that I just didn't get a chance to eat much at all!

Anyway, first fast day today as might as well get started & I've got a busy day ahead. It would be nice to lose a stone over the next few months to get back to my pre-preg weight.

postmanpatsreindeer · 16/12/2013 07:58

Welcome back elr and welcome dino. You've come to the right place!

toffee sounds like you've got those kids under control but shame on DH for ironing it when you'd said no

Not sure whether I'm fasting this week or not. My current weight tells me not to bother but with work xmas do Thursday night a mini fast or post-party fast is quite likely. We went to the same place two years ago and portions were huge. Got my size 6 (but it's Next so really an 8) party dress ready for the photocall!

EatriskierDrinkAndBeMerry · 16/12/2013 08:07

waves at elr and biscuits
welcome dino and anyone else I've forgotten

MFD again today here. will be lof until the kids are in bed, which seems forever as ds isn't even up yet Hmm . appear to have turned into one of those people, you know, the ones that get up early to exercise...

this thread already seems to be slowing down, I'm beginning to keep up with it!!!

good luck to today's fasters and well done to any losers.

Southeastdweller · 16/12/2013 08:20

Welcome back ELR and good luck Dino, a busy day will get you off to a great start.

Can't believe it's Christmas next week already!

BetsyJingleBells · 16/12/2013 08:26

I started up thread 33 - it's a bit early but I'm busy all day today! Please carry on using this thread to fill it up Xmas Smile

Thread 33

BetsyJingleBells · 16/12/2013 08:30

Welcome Dino - good luck with your first day - you're right, keeping busy is the key :)

Tiredemma · 16/12/2013 08:31

I wonder if I did my own version of this when I was a junior doctor. Some days were so busy that I just didn't get a chance to eat much at all!

I think back to the days when I was a very busy staff nurse and think I must have done Fast Days!

Then I occasionally remind myself of the various chocolate bars consumed in a 'grab and run' style fashion from the vending machine!

ELR · 16/12/2013 09:38

Thanks for the welcome back everyone!
Well it's worse than I thought!! Got weighed and measured this morning and after an indulgent weekend I'm at 10st 0.5lb which is the same weight I have more or less been for the last 10 years!! I've also gained around an inch on each leg, waist and hips and half an inch on bust and under bust.
To think that in July I was almost a stone lighter is depressing but I'm not going to let that get me down. The thing is I really have no choice I binned all my old size 14 clothes and only kept size 12 stuff and anything new I've bought has been a size 12 so the fact that some stuff is feeling a little tight is motivation in itself.
peplum I haven't really fasted since August but have done at least one 16/8 each week so hopefully I will be able to get back into it fairly easily.

ELR · 16/12/2013 09:42

Just realised I meant 10st10.5 !! If only it was easy as easy as a typo to lose 10lbs!

BsshBossh · 16/12/2013 09:50

Welcome Dino. Plunging right in - I like your style! What are your other doctor colleagues' thoughts on 5:2/intermittent fasting and have you told them you're doing it?

FD Monday today. Will aim to do a 24 hour LOF then have a green soup for dinner.

BeyondTheLimitsOfXmasability · 16/12/2013 10:01

Fast day for me, not had chance to eat anything yet anyway Xmas Grin

At physio, waiting for my next lot of accupuncture

TurkeyAtYuleHoHo · 16/12/2013 10:27

Morning Campers!! Xmas Wink

Blimey I am waaaaay behind! Just catching up...

TiredEmma - WOW! Welcome back and congratulations!!!

FunnyFestive - love the walk of shame back to Gluttonville! Xmas Grin
I started off down that road this weekend! Am at traffic lights now, looking desperately for a roundabout! (I appear to have jumped into a car!)

Somewhere - very sweet/kind words from you, and many others. But I fear the RL version of me would no doubt be a bit of an anti-climax! Just being myself. BigChoc is a happy accident! (Not of nature Xmas Grin - though if repeated that would lead to an Uber Race wouldn't it! A planet full of buff bodies, wrestling for the last remaining cocoa bean!)

Biscuits - Great to hear from you! I am SO pleased you have found a new job!! Congratulations, and Good Luck with it, and kicking butt with 5:2 again Thanks

Welcome and welcome back to ELR and Dino!

In my lurking days I think I thought ELR and Eatrisky were one and the same?! Think that came from the abbr of EagleLovinRider?? Thought you just liked a name change. Xmas Grin I remember a few in a row and when you got married (Eat) can I also belatedly agree with B&W that I liked your old name! I was lurkerishly agreeing with him back them!!

Anyway! Regarding this whole Christmas outfit pics thing.... I don't have any dresses so that is out! I have never been one for wearing anything remotely fitted as have always been a bit body shy, so I'm not sure it will reveal much. But I will take one end of/next week in some Christmas finery just for fun.

Have had a disgusting weekend food/drink wise. Finished with lots of red wine last night, so apologies if I talk a load of shite today! (unlike every other day, of course)

BsshBossh · 16/12/2013 10:30

Who ate all the mince pies? Me it seems Blush. Not today, I hasten to add. So glad today is a FD and I get to atone for my sins.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 16/12/2013 10:50

postmanpatsreindeer - to be fair to DH I didn't say no, I just didn't volunteer to iron it as she hadn't done as she was told. As she was wearing it to go out of school he probably felt she needed to look smarter.

Didn't have my walk as did other errands. Just put together Lemon Fruit Twist and am waiting to bake it in the oven. Sensible plan to bake on a FD Hmm. No idea what is wrong with me, I just can't stop the urge to bake Confused.

TurkeyAtYuleHoHo · 16/12/2013 10:53

Bssh - I am totally with you on both the Christmas outfits thing, and the Christmas has begun (and not in a good way) thing!

We did our Christmas food/drink shop on fri. All except the short shelf life fresh bits.

Well needless to say it created a free for all atmosphere this weekend. I actually felt compelled to open the whiskey Fri evening. Scoffed buckets of cheese on sat night. All washed down with lots of kettle chips and chocolates.

We also had an annual family meal/gathering yesterday too. Ate loads again. Came home, popped pizza in oven, before popping entire thing into me! Oh and can't do that without lashings and lashings of red wine Xmas Hmm

So now, although thankfestively I am not in pain with hangover. I am feeling seriously bloated, constipated and sharty, all at same time!

Would normally fast today, but think I need to make a good hot, wholesome curry tonight, to blow away the cobwebs!

These last few days have made me realise a couple of things...

I will be 5:2/4:3 ing for another week yet!

I may well not have the pre discussed 'holiday' from fasting, and may just decide on a daily basis what to do.

I know I absolutely COULD NOT maintain this kind of eating and drinking for the rest of the festive period. I feel horrible! My body really does not like over indulging anymore for more than a day at a time!

I NEED FASTING / MINDFUL EATING / 16:8 / KITCHEN CLOSED / NO SNACKING (sometimes Xmas Wink ) / ALL OF MY INTERMITTENT FASTING HABITS - IN MY LIFE!!!!!!!!!!!!

OP posts:
TurkeyAtYuleHoHo · 16/12/2013 11:04

Oh and another bloody thing!

My hula hoop still not turned up yet!!

I know it's Christmas soon, but COME ON!

Y'know, for someone like me - a complete exercise nut (ahem) - It is very very difficult not to get my daily fix of exercise!!

Think I might sue Yodel!!

They are a yode (l) of pants!

I could do something else of course, but what with me being exempt on medical grounds an' all that. I can't!!

..very disappointing.....

Will have to be MrsF being JillianM and DIG DEEP today.
