Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 32 - We can eat it tomorrow: toffees, toffee sponge or even toffee sausages!

TurkeyAtYuleHoHo · 04/12/2013 09:32

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

eatriskier’s thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Hi All. I am coming back in the new year as I have a job starting then. I dont know if anyone remembers, but my last job didn't work out. I was unhappy for weeks and dreaded going in. I arrived at work 20 mins early one day and just burst into tears just because I was at work. Just over 24 hours later I left. It was all mutual and I left under a good cloud. They have provided me with a reference too.

Anyway I found it impossible to stick to 500 cals when not at work (mainly due to DH eating and me not having enough willpower to just say no) so said I would be back once I start a new job. Anyway I have just accepted a job that starts on 2nd Jan Smile so Im thinking to go straight into the 5:2. Rather than get into any bad habits, start with 5:2 from the word go and make that my habit. So I now have a plan.

I have 2 TDEE's. TDEE1 is the cals for my goal weight with no exercise. TDEE2 is the cals for my current weight with light exercise (I run 2/3 times a week, plus I walk the dog everyday and with now having an hour lunch I plan to go for a walk most days). Obviously TDEE2 will (hopefully) change as my weight lowers.

So my weekly eating routine will be:
Mon - FD
Tues - TDEE1
Wed - TDEE1
Thurs - either FD or TDEE1
Fri - either FD or TDEE2
Sat - Pig day. No counting, no worries. Though will have mindful eating and not eat if not hungry and stop eating when full.
Sun - TDEE2

My Thurs/Fri FD will depend on which day we will go shopping. As I work I have to go after work one night so will be too busy to eat much, therefore finding it easy that day to have a FD. That will depend on when we can afford the weekly shop.

While away from the 5:2 I have declined snacks and not eaten after my tea. I have also increased my water intake and drank 1.5 to 2 litres a day. I have maintained my weight by doing this. I intend to carry on the no snacking and no eating on a night. Also making sure I drink my water.

I will have a quick catch up with the thread in another post as yet again I have waffled on a bit there.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 15/12/2013 11:14

Hello all Smile.

I have been gripped by the cooking monster again. DH has taken DS2 swimming, DD and DS1 are at PIL so I am doing roast chicken lunch and have just taken ham and mustard twirls out of the oven and am waiting to put a cinnamon raison whirl in. Also need to come up with a pudding for the kids but might use the raison whirl.

In my size 12 trousers but had a bit of a wobbly tummy this morning and am desperate to do some exercise Shock so might get the Wii out later. Haven't been on it for ages and can't wait to weigh in and see what smugvoiceover lady says Grin. Will also be good to get the kids doing something on it other than minecraft on the computer.

Breadandwine · 15/12/2013 11:17

Sounds like you've got it sorted, Biscuits!

Congrats on the new job. Flowers

BigChocFrenzyAteYourReindeer · 15/12/2013 11:33

Xmas Smile

Welcome back, Biscuits. Congrats on the new job.
Flowers
Sounds a good 5:2 routine you have worked out. Definitely best to restart now: you'll reduce the danger of an Xmas gain and also you'll have your FDing fine-tuned before you need to get used to work.

Hey Not2b, Xmaspud, I have the franchise on frenzies here !
A weekly Frenzy keeps the TDEE high.
^

postmanpatsreindeer · 15/12/2013 12:08

Welcome back biscuits I'm glad you have a new job to look forward to. Sounds like you have everything under control and a bright future ahead.

FunnyFestiveTableRunner · 15/12/2013 12:26

Morning all. Can I just agree with the people who find that they feel a bit shit after greedy days. Compared with how energetic I felt on FD I feel so sluggish and lethargic after two days of scoffing.

Going to have a cup of coffee, no food since dinner last night so might even do a 16:8 today. Then a proper fast from teatime today till at least teatime tomorrow.

BetsyJingleBells · 15/12/2013 12:53

Brilliant news biscuits, so great you've been able to find a new job so quickly :) Your 5:2 plan looks excellent too! Flowers

BsshBossh · 15/12/2013 13:09

Christmas tree is now up and decorated; the window and room decorations are also up.... and the first of many mince pies have been consumed. I am stuffed and it's only 1pm. Christmas eating has begun then Blush.

TheRaniOfYawn · 15/12/2013 13:32

FD today for me, so have had vegetable bouillon for lunch followed by ginger tea.

I had a sneaky peek at my weight today and was a bit gobsmacked by how much I seem to have lost despite

TheRaniOfYawn · 15/12/2013 13:36

Sorry, a child just jumped on me and hit post.

...despite having scoffed wine, mulled wine, chocolate, hot chocolate and a wensleydale and bacon ciabatta. Apart from the cold, I feel great.

BiscuitsAreMyDownfall · 15/12/2013 13:52

TiredEmma Congratulations on the new baby.

Breadandwine Well done on staying in the low nines. I plan to get down there eventually.

Not2b Its so easy for those extra calories to sneak in isnt it. I really really want to eat that small chocolate lying there, just one. Though it never sticks at just one.

Bssh I take its not a FD then Grin

Rani I have found in the past my weight has lost after a binge, but stayed the same or even grown after a good day. I had a really good couple of days on Thurs and Fri, yet my weight was higher than I thought yesterday morning. This weight thing is strange.

I meant to say I tried on some size 12 jeans the other week. I could do them up (just), but I really hung over them and it was not attractive at all. So now I know how badly they fit and I can try them on again every month or so until I can buy them when they fit me nice. Right now I dont think I could manage to do them up though.

Emmabryant123 · 15/12/2013 13:59

Didn't eat much yesterday in the end.
Porridge with banana and peanut butter
Fish cakes, chips and beans for dinner.
Drunk apple juice, one mug tea with milk, one mug coffee with milk, water and one can sugar free 7up.
Today have eaten two slices toast with banana and peanut butter (yes I'm obsessed with this combo)
Dh making a rogan josh curry with chicken, peppers, onions, mushrooms and jar of sauce for tea or when ever it's ready. I'm hungry but am content to wait (hunger wont kill me for a few hours , nothing will happen to me because I feel hungry I keep saying )
Serving with rice for him and dd2 and jacket pot for me and dd1, mini naan breads and spicy Bombay potatoes (mmm) carb feast.
Probably wont have anything else to eat after that.
Have drunk a mug tea with milk , a mug coffee with milk and sugar free orange squash (I really hate water!) but force my self to have a glass a day.
Not sure what food I'm taking to work tomorrow. Might just take some fruit (really lost my appeteite the past few days) ... Or take nothing and just have a nice hot dinner in the evening.
Thursday is last day at work before Xmas and we are getting dominoes for lunch. Yummy!

BsshBossh · 15/12/2013 14:34

I've decided that, in the run-up to Christmas week, I'm going to do another week of clean eating this week. I felt so cleansed the last time I did it. Will load up on fresh veg tomorrow and aim to eat 80% vegetables, 20% lean protein and minimal processed white carbs.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 15/12/2013 14:38

Damn, I had forgotten all about the clean eating.

Tomorrow I am going to fast and to walk to the shop for bread and cereal for the kids. That will take an hour or so.

BiscuitsAreMyDownfall · 15/12/2013 15:03

Oooh so I was just checking my TDEE and the link in the OP doesn't work anymore. Apparently the domain name for the site expired yesterday. I have typed TDEE into google and there are others. Will they be ok to use?

BetsyJingleBells · 15/12/2013 15:48

Oh, thanks for the heads up on the link biscuits. I think Bssh tried out some other ones or bigchoc maybe?

If anyone's got a tried and tested TDEE link they want in the OP please let me know so we can update it in time for thread 33…

The Michael Mosley site one seems good thefastdiet.co.uk/how-many-calories-on-a-non-fast-day/ - seems to come up with the same sort of figures.

Tiredemma · 15/12/2013 15:56

Thanks for the welcome back and the baby wishes!

Going to start on Tuesday and then have another FD on Thursday ( as we launch into Xmas week!) next week ill fast on Xmas eve and Friday.

I have about 1stone 8lbs to lose Sad

TalkinPeace · 15/12/2013 16:00

OI
just been skimming the thread and there is a serious dearth of party dress pics public to view

and yes, many of us who have posted are now slim
but look at our "before pics"

seriouslsy,
posting it sets it in stone as a place you were / are / will be

and
as eatriskier and bssh have wonderfully shown, the butterflies are just waiting to come into view

use all the tricks : floor level light, tailored, one hip forward
BE PROUD

but also be focussed

and frankly I most look forward to seeing the men looking shit hot in their suits (tux, not birthday)

BetsyJingleBells · 15/12/2013 16:05

Souteastdweller promised a xmas jumper pic - what happened to that?!?! Would prefer suits though!

BsshBossh · 15/12/2013 16:51

TDEE calculator

The one I always use (at 210 lbs, at 129 lbs) is:
scoobysworkshop.com/calorie-calculator/

BigChocFrenzyAteYourReindeer · 15/12/2013 18:12

I prefer the TDEE calculator below, because it lets you specify how many hours of each activity level per day and allows a %BFat option.

TDEE

Also, it's the only calculator that gave me a sufficiently high TDEE to explain why my frenzies don't put on weight.

btw: Scoobie (classic lifter) menu options assume eating 3-8 times per day (remember no snacks in 5:2!)
Xmas Shock

BsshBossh · 15/12/2013 18:38

Oh yes, I've always ignored the eating schedule in the Scooby calc. I just use the TDEE total.

EarSlaps · 15/12/2013 18:39

Ok, party dress pic added. No idea why it gets rid of my other picture though.

TalkinPeace · 15/12/2013 18:43

WOWZAYOWZA

you need to do it as "upload more pictures" and then make the new one 2nd in line and then they both / all stay

Southeastdweller · 15/12/2013 18:45

Congrats emma on the arrival of your DD.

Well done biscuits on maintaining.

Betsy I wasn't happy with the pic I took on Friday but going to take a few now and put one on tomorrow when I get back to my desktop at work. Sorry to say that I don't own a suit, I just rent them when I need them! Grin
