Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 31 - Getting healthier one day at a time.

BetsyBell · 19/11/2013 10:36

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

eatriskier’s thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Hello everybody.
Congrats to all those who fasted today. Tomorrow is supposed to be a FD for me but am moving it to Thursday cos I have a bridal shower.
To all those feeling poorly I say get well soon.

EatriskierDrinkAndBeMerry · 03/12/2013 20:50

Its Tuesday Wine day here.

Finally got the courage to go out somewhere more than 15 mins from my house with both DC on my own. No mean feat with a potty training, ear infected DD and teething DS. Went swimingly well in fact. Until the thing I was taking DD out for took us nearly 2 hours from start to finish, by which point I nearly had a meltdown bigger than DD has ever managed…

Hope everyone is feeling ok/FDs are going well/NFDs aren't too mega.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 03/12/2013 21:04

Ah, missed your post MrsF. Your husband is a baby SadAngry. You deserve better.

TurkeyAtYuleHoHo · 03/12/2013 22:10

Feeling slightly traumatised [violated face]....

....not sure..but...

....I think I might have just had a frenzy? Xmas Confused

....also feeling bit sick Xmas Envy

BigChocFrenzyAteYourReindeer · 03/12/2013 22:13

Rubbish I hope your miserable cold disappears very soon. You have done very well to manage an FD.

MrsF :
I find LFDs nearly as easy as 500-cal FDs. If you can last 36hr+ with a solid food FD, the other soon becomes possible.

The main difference is that for normal FDs I would just have 1 meal, which is an (optional) supper, so either up to 450 cals, or skip supper.
For LFDs, in contrast, you need to spread out the liquids over the day.

I like to do all kinds of FDs, LFDs and solids, to mix it up.
Sometimes I do a 100-cal LFD, just veg juice, cocoa, tea, espresso.
The other variety I have been trying this week is with Atkins low carb shakes, which I think were in Mattson's 5:2 human trials.

So, the main LFD enabler, whatever the cals (for me at least) is very low carb, with near-0g sugar.

YMMV Xmas Smile

MrsFlorrick · 03/12/2013 22:18

Wow Turkey. That's a frenzy!! Holy crap.

Hope you feel better shortly.

Bigchocfrenzyateyourraindeer. Grin. Excellent NC.

MrsFlorrick · 03/12/2013 22:23

Bigchocfrenzyateyourraindeer. Thanks Flowers

(Strokes beard) Atkins shakes eh. Ok. I used those occasionally when LCing and fouNd them filling so I could manage over night if I had one of those. That's worth a go. May purchase some tomorrow.

I'm back doing my JM workouts again. Due to SI joint pain I had two weeks where I only worked out 5 times total. But back into it this week. Every day since Saturday. Hopefully that will help.

dingdongduckyfuzz · 03/12/2013 22:27

Wow turkey, That's impressive, hope you recover and see the error of your ways!

MrsF nice to 'see' you again, sorry dh is still not pulling his weight though

Two nsvs to report - I tried on a Zara top in medium and it fits Xmas Shock and I stopped after one glass of wine and a large handful of nuts

BigChocFrenzyAteYourReindeer · 03/12/2013 22:31

Well done, DingDongDucky, on your 2 NSVs
Xmas Smile

dingdongduckyfuzz · 03/12/2013 22:33

Ta bcf!

BigChocFrenzyAteYourReindeer · 03/12/2013 22:37

Hey Turkey. You really are a big gobbler. Yup, you have had a (small) Frenzy.
BUT, whereas my guts have had years of training for this and I could outdo Rasputin in surviving imbibing, Frenzying is no work for an amateur gullet.

Why did we agree to do NND ? Because
IFUC is better than IFOC !
Xmas Wink
^^

Don't worry, a 1-day Frenzy will mostly be eliminated as water and multiple dumps, so your weight and tum will improve substantially within a couple of days.

Seriously, your arse-hole may get quite sore, so do include wet loo paper in your wiping ritual, if you don't already.
TMMI !
^^

Best wishes to your nether regions
Xmas Grin

BigChocFrenzyAteYourReindeer · 03/12/2013 22:43

Turkey A bit alarming that you & others regard that as a major Frenzy.
For me, that would be a moderate weekend day, for which I would congratulate myself on self control / abstinence.
Xmas Blush
Ah well, the gulf between a pro and an amateur

postmanpatsreindeer · 03/12/2013 22:44

Best wishes to your nether regions We really do go to the places no other threads would venture, surely?

V successful FD for me, off to bed in a mo with peppermint tea number 7, and that is it...nothing else has passed my lips today. I also ran 9k and walked to/from the gym today as I went straight after work and I walk to work, so no alternative really.

Well done bennett on your loss and ducky on your NSVs and welcome back MrsF, was wondering where you were.

turkey/cuckoo that wasn't a proper frenzy, that was a little overindulgence! Tomorrow's another day...

MelanieCheeks · 03/12/2013 22:56

Back after a weekend away ( where dh remarked on my tiny ass....)

Fd tomorrow, might be the only one this week so I'll make it a good un

BigChocFrenzyAteYourReindeer · 03/12/2013 23:06

postmanpatsreindeer Well done on your tea LFD and all the exercise. You must have a large calorie deficit for the day.
Xmas Smile

whimsicalname · 03/12/2013 23:25

Guessing most of you have gone to bed by now. Just sneaking in to say I think I did ok on my Jillian Michaelsday. Meant to be 1400. I think I'm probably up round 1600 or so after half a bit of cake and an extra spoon of coq. Not necessarily on the meal plan, but good for the soul. Fd for me tomorrow again. See you on the next thread!

TurkeyAtYuleHoHo · 03/12/2013 23:33

Thanks guys for the comforting. I am tucked up now resting my load. Think fact it was consumed pretty much immediately after dinner did not help. And tum hadn't fully recovered from weekend yet either! Well lesson learnt!

Have to stand up for my efforts though. These were not meager little portions. They were gold ball sized truffles. The cookies were at least size of my head a side plate. The bars of choc from whence rows came were at bare minimum 3 ft 10 inches. I really bloody pigged out y'know!!(Huffy indignant face)

BigCockyReindeer from the bottom of my pants - Thank You! Although scared, my nether regions are feeling braver about the forthcoming challenges they face, knowing that they have you rooting for them!
I will no doubt only manage to produce Gillian McKeith sneer worthy goods for next couple of days. I'm just glad I have you and your never ending supply of encouragement, support and soothing words to be the salve for my soreness. Like a cooling breeze of kindness. I will think of you many times as I take aim during these difficult times. Thanks [nut butter] [cancelled gym membership] [national ban on rice pudding] Cake

TurkeyAtYuleHoHo · 03/12/2013 23:53

Slightly alarmed at Whimsical's confession that another spoonful of coq whilst not on the food menu, is still good for the soul Xmas Shock

Do they spell it differently in America??? Xmas Hmm

.... or am I suffering from amateur sugar confusion?....

..and how does one measure with spoonfuls?! Xmas Confused (tries to sleep while feeling very innocent in the ways of the possible secret side to 5:2)

TurkeyAtYuleHoHo · 04/12/2013 00:21

Melanie Nice NSV!! Always good to hear it from someone else. And well done you on nabbing one who notices AND comments! Surely name adjustment to reflect cheek feedback??...

headintheclouds · 04/12/2013 00:23

Oh welcome back dotty ,wondered where you were! I've been keeping my head down. have had so many celebrations with myHUGE birthday that I've slipped with the thread...but have still been quietly sticking to the 5:2 and weight loss slower than ever BUT it's still moving downwards .
Now 9 st 11 ... Only 4 lbs to go to my 'target '.... I was hoping it'd come off before Christmas..but now that I know my body's reaction to this WOE I'm sure it'll be more like end of Jan. But that's fine because I'm feeling/ looking great. Just bought a fab dress for this years work 'do' - size 12 !! I was determined not to be mumsy / matronly at 50 ! And it's fair to say I'm not !
Great WOE - I'm a lifer

postmanpatsreindeer · 04/12/2013 05:58

oh well done hitc what a great result!

Post FD wakefulness here...DP has just left for work, which helped to wake me up (and he only got home at 1am!)

EatriskierDrinkAndBeMerry · 04/12/2013 07:23

Grin Grin Grin Grin at Turkey
at least I'm not alone with my dirty mind

BetsyJingleBells · 04/12/2013 07:43

Good morning you filthy frenzied lot! And you, with your tiny ass melanie Grin

NFD NND today. Am at work all day with a lack of internet access so watch out for a new thread starter today...

Work has been heaving with biscuits and cakes but I have touched none, except on a friday when it is allowed. (Psyching myself up there - BB - remember today is WEDNESDAY not Friday).

Have a great day everyone :)

Baloostika · 04/12/2013 08:50

Good morning to you all my beautiful people.
Trying to stay for as long as I can but I don't see that happening as am in a Rotary International breakfast meeting.
O Lord can I withstand this temptation?
Wishing all a beautiful day.

dingdongduckyfuzz · 04/12/2013 09:00

Yay well done with NSVs!
FD here today, at home all day with the invalid so will have to resist kitchen temptations, might get a run in later though
